Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the temperature of a gas is not too high and the density of a gas is not too low, the transfer of heat by radiation is usually negligibly small in comparison with that by conduction and convection. However, in the hypersonic flow of space flight, particularly in the re-entry of a space vehicle, and in the flow problem involving nuclear reaction such as in the blast wave of nuclear bomb or in the peaceful use of the controlled fusion reaction, the temperature of the gas may be very high and the density of the gas may be very low. As a result, thermal radiation becomes a very important mode of heat transfer. A complete analysis of such high temperature flow fields should be based upon a study of the gasdynamic field and the radiation field simultaneously. Hence during the last few years, considerable efforts have been made to study such interaction problems between gasdynamic field and radiation field and a new title, Radiation Gasdynamics, has been suggested for this subject. Even though radiative transfer has been studied for a long time by astro physicists, the interaction between the radiation field and the gadsynamic field has been only extensively studied recently.

Book Modern Developments in Gas Dynamics

Download or read book Modern Developments in Gas Dynamics written by W. H. Loh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, the rapid growth of knowledge in the field of fluid mechanics and heat transfer has resulted in many significant ad vances of interest to students, engineers, and scientists. Accordingly, a course entitled "Modern Developments in Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer" was given at the University of California to present significant recent theoretical and experimental work. The course consisted of seven parts: I-Introduction; II-Hydraulic Analogy for Gas Dynamics; 111- Turbulence and Unsteady Gas Dynamics; IV-Rarefied and Radiation Gas Dynamics; V-Biological Fluid Mechanics; VI-Hypersonic and Plasma Gas Dynamics; and VII-Heat Transfer in Hypersonic Flows. The material, presented by the undersigned as course instructor and by various guest lecturers, could easily be adapted by other universities for use as a text for a one-semester senior or graduate course on the subject. Due to the extensive notes developed during the University of California course, it was decided to publish the material in three volumes, of which the present is the first. The succeeding volumes will be entitled "Selected Topics in Fluid and Bio-Fluid Mechanics" and "Introduction to Steady and Unsteady Gas Dynamics." Finally, I must express a word of appreciation to my wife Irene and to my children, Wellington Jr. and Victoria, who made it possible for me to write and edit this book in the very quiet atmosphere of our home.

Book Radiation and Reentry

Download or read book Radiation and Reentry written by S Penner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation and Reentry is an integrated review of a series of publications dealing with radiative transfer theory, applied spectroscopy, radiation gas dynamics, and ablation phenomena. This book contains seven chapters and begins with a presentation of opacity calculations under conditions for which detailed considerations of spectral line structures and widths are not required. The discussion then shifts to the basic methods involved in the formulation of radiative transfer problems; origin and definition of the Planck and Rosseland mean free paths; the conservation equations for reacting, multicomponent gas mixtures with proper allowance for radiative energy flux; and similarity parameters in radiation gas dynamics. These topics are followed by a summary of data relevant to the optically thick, optically thin, and isothermal cases for air in local thermodynamic equilibrium. A chapter describes the radiative properties of spherical particles and their particle size distributions. Another chapter considers the estimation of radiant-energy transmission through atmosphere. The concluding chapters explore the radiation transfer effects on the flow about a re-entry body and the specific problems of the effect of radiant-energy transfer on acoustic waves, shock wave structure, and shock and boundary layers. These chapters also examine the theoretical and experimental studies on the ablation of re-entry vehicles. This book is of great value to educated nonspecialists who are interested in the application of radiation field to high-speed atmospheric entry.

Book An Introduction to High Temperature Radiation Gas Dynamics

Download or read book An Introduction to High Temperature Radiation Gas Dynamics written by Philip M. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is intended as an introduction to the study of radiative transfer and hydrodynamics in the high temperature (>10,000K) regime. Most of the basic references on radiative transfer are oriented to astrophysics. It is always difficult for workers in other areas of research to cull from this literature those aspects of the subject relevant to their own interests. The purpose of this document is to present the basic principles of radiation gas dynamics from the point of view of weapons physics. The first chapter is concerned with the radiation field alone. The transfer equation is derived in its various forms, and the general formulation of radiant energy transfer in materials is discussed. The second chapter describes the various mechanisms by which the radiation field interacts with a material medium. This section, therefore, provides an introduction to the general problem of opacities. The third chapter presents the basic theory of hydrodynamics and the influence of radiation fields on fluid motion. These chapters cover the three fundamental aspects of the subject: the state of the radiation field, the radiation-material interaction, and the motion of the material. (Author).

Book Anisotropic Radiative Transfer in Gas Dynamics

Download or read book Anisotropic Radiative Transfer in Gas Dynamics written by James Brinson Elgin and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classical differential formulation of radiative transfer in a gray gas is reevaluated for the condition of arbitrary anisotropy of the intensity distribution. A sectional ellipsoidal model is developed, and used to provide a spatially varying closure condition for the radiation moment equations, valid for arbitrary anisotropy. The model is further used to provide equally applicable boundary conditions. The approach is applied in several examples of pure radiative transfer for gases within straight walled, cylindrical and conical enclosures. Singularities arising in the analysis are identified, the numerical methods for treating them are presented. Application of the ellipsoidal model is made to the radiatively coupled hypersonic flow over a wedge. Differences between the solution are discussed.
