Download or read book Radiation Studies from Nuclear Emulsions and Metallic Components Recovered from Polar Satellite Orbits written by Herman Yagoda and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study discusses two blocks of Ilford G5 emulsions, plus metallic components, that were recovered from the polar orbiting satellites, Discoverer XVII and XVIII. This discussion covers the Class 3+ flare of 12 Nov 1960 in relation to the Discoverer XVII exposure; photographic processing of satellite-exposed emulsions; preliminary cosmic-ray observations on orbited emulsions; and radiochemical analyses of the Discoverer capsules. Download or read book The Lunar Surface Layer written by John W. Salisbury and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lunar Surface Layer: Materials and Characteristics focuses on the characteristics, nature, and materials located in the lunar surface layer, including lunar soil mechanics, water vapor adsorption, and soil behavior. The selection first elaborates on soil mechanics considerations in the testing of lunar soil models, an experimental study in lunar soil mechanics, and gravity effects on soil behavior. Discussions focus on cohesion in lunar soils, gravity effect on dynamic shear strength of soils, porosity, soil bearing strength, lunar effects, soil cohesion in the lunar environment, gradation, structure and contact characteristics, and statics and dynamics. The book then examines the investigation of soil adhesion under high vacuum; water vapor adsorption behavior of kaolinite after high-vacuum storage; and sonic velocity and shear strength of possible lunar surface materials. Concerns cover shear strength, sonic velocity, experimental apparatus, and calibration. The manuscript takes a look at the consideration of properties of simulated lunar soil with possible stabilization techniques; feasibility of remote compositional mapping of the lunar surface; thermal emission characteristics of mineral dusts; and thermal properties of postulated lunar surface materials. The selection is highly recommended for researchers wanting to study the lunar surface layer.

Book The Formation of Ions in the Upper Atmosphere

Download or read book The Formation of Ions in the Upper Atmosphere written by Robert E. Huffman and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present state of our knowledge concerning the formation of positive and negative ions in the earth's normal ionosphere is reviewed. The main process by which positive ions and electrons are formed in the ionosphere is photoionization of neutral constituents by solar vacuum ultraviolet radiation. Negative ions are formed primarily by direct attachment of electrons to certain neutral constituents. Existing values of the cross sections and rate coefficients of these processes are presented and gaps in the present knowledge are discussed.

Book New Vacuum Ultraviolet Emission Continua in the Rare Gases

Download or read book New Vacuum Ultraviolet Emission Continua in the Rare Gases written by Robert E. Huffman and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several new vacuum ultraviolet-emission continua recently observed in the spectra of the rare gases helium, argon, and xenon are discussed. These spectra were produced with a windowless light source operated as a repetitive condensed discharge and equipped with a differential pumping system to separate the high pressure (up to 800 mm Hg of helium) light source from the 2-m vacuum spectrograph (pressure 1/1000 mm Hg). In helium two continua were observed at pressures above 150 mm in addition to the weaker 600 to 950 angstroms continuum. The brightest extends from about 1050 to above 4000 angstroms and seems connected with greatly enhanced lines of He(II). The other continuum is the completely broadened principal series extending from 584 to about 510 angstroms and containing broadened principal series absorption lines. With argon in a flow system or xenon isolated with a LiF window, previously observed continua were extended from their resonance lines to beyond 3000 angstroms. Details of the experimental observations and possible explanations of these continua are presented. (Author).
