Book Radiation Induced Property Changes in AISI Type 347 Stainless Steel

Download or read book Radiation Induced Property Changes in AISI Type 347 Stainless Steel written by W. E. Murr and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changes in the mechanical properties of AISI type 347 stainless steel produced by irradiation at ~120 F to 5.7 x 1021 and 1.2 x 1022 neutrons per sq cm have been determined by tension, impact, and hardness tests. The ultimate strength was increased from 90,000 to 114,000 psi, yield strength was increased from 38,000 to 104,000 psi, and elongation was reduced from 64 to 30 per cent at 75 F. Somewhat smaller changes were obtained at 600 F test temperature. A 1-hr anneal at 1800 F removed all effects of irradiation produced by 1.2 x 1022 neutrons per sq cm and reduced tensile properties at 75 F to essentially the same values as the unirradiated 347 stainless steel. Increased hardness of 347 steel resulting from irradiation was not removed by annealing at 600 F. The energy absorbed at fracture on irradiated Charpy V-notch specimens was 65 ft-lb at 75 F and 20 ft-lb at - 300 F. Sufficient ductility in combination with the increased yield strength would appear to be more than adequate to warrant the service of this material in reactor environments of approximately 120 F to neutron exposures of 1.2 x 1022 neutrons per sq cm.

Book Effect of Neutron Irradiation on Mechanical Properties of AISI Type 347 Stainless Steel

This book was released on 1967 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in mechanical properties induced by irradiation of AISI Type 347 stainless steel at about 60 C were determined after integrated fast-flux (>1 Mev) exposures of 1.6 x 1022 and 2.1 x 1022 n/cm2. Tension tests were performed at room temperature, 316, and 750 C. The results indicated that the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength were greater after irradiation, with the yield strength showing the greater increase. After an exposure of 2.1 x 1022 n/cm2, the ratio of yield strength to ultimate strength was approximately 1. The decreases in ductility as measured by total and uniform elongation at 20 C were about the same magnitude for both levels of irradiation. The ductility at 316 C continued to decrease as a function of increasing neutron exposure. Radiation-induced property changes differed only slightly from those observed after irradiation to 5.5 x 1021 n/cm2 with the exception of the uniform and the total elongation at 316 C, suggesting that saturation of displacement damage occurred prior to this exposure. The fracture mode for both unirradiated and irradiated specimens was transgranular. Annealing of irradiated specimens for 1 hr at 982 C restored the preirradiation mechanical properties at 316 C. A severe reduction in ductility was noted for specimens tested at 750 C after irradiation to 2.1 x 1022 n/cm2, showing only about 0.5 per cent as uniform and total elongation. The fracture mode was intergranular. Annealing for 1 hr at 982 and 1350 C did not change the as-irradiated ductility.

Book Nuclear Science Abstracts

Book excerpt: NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.

Book The Effect of Nuclear Radiation on Structural Metals

Download or read book The Effect of Nuclear Radiation on Structural Metals written by Frederic R. Shober and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of fast-neutron (>1 Mev) irradiation on the mechanical properties of structural metals and alloys was studied. Although the yield strengths and ultimate tensile strengths are increased su stantially for most materials, the ductility suffers severe decreases. This report presents these changes in properties of several structural metals for a number of neutron exposures within the 1.0 x 10 to the 18th power to 5.0 x 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm range. Data summarizing these effects on several classes of materials such as carbon steels, low-alloy steels, stainless steels, Zr-base alloys, ni-base alloys, Al-base alloys, and Ta are given. Additional data which show the influence f irradiation temperatures and of post-irradiation annealing on the radiation-induced property changes are also given and discussed. Increases as great as 175% in yield strength, 100% in ultimate strength, and decreases of 80% in total elongation are reported for fast-neutron exposures as great as 5 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm. Book Some Implications of Radiation induced Property Changes in Austenitic Stainless Steels on ITER International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor First wall Design and Performance

Download or read book Some Implications of Radiation induced Property Changes in Austenitic Stainless Steels on ITER International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor First wall Design and Performance written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New data on radiation-induced hardening, low-temperature creep and potential susceptibility (sensitization) to aqueous corrosion have been obtained on various heats of austenitic stainless steel (including type 316) irradiated at 60--400°C to 7--13 dpa. The data were obtained from spectral-tailoring reactor experiments, whose radiation-damage parameters are similar to those in the proposed International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) first-wall (FW) and blanket design. Austenitic stainless steels were found to increase significantly in strength at 60--330°C, to have higher irradiation-creep rates at 60°C than at 200--400°C, and to show radiation-induced changes in electrochemical properties at 200--400°C. These data on several radiation-induced property changes suggest that type 316 steel may be an adequate material for the FW of ITER. However, there is definitely a need for new data on fracture-toughness and on fatigue behavior below 400°C, as well as more data on irradiation-creep and effects of irradiation on corrosion properties to better define temperature and dose dependencies for more detailed design analyses. Cold-working should remain an optional as-fabricated condition for the FW of ITER. Many properties of SA and CW 316 become similar after irradiation at 60--400°C. The higher initial yield-strength of CW 316 will allow higher design stress and elastic strain limits. 31 refs., 10 figs.
