Book Radiation Damage Study on the Lithium Hydride SNAP Shield

Download or read book Radiation Damage Study on the Lithium Hydride SNAP Shield written by and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation damage may occur to the lithium hydride shields as a result of the reaction Li6(n, [alpha])H3. There is evidence in the literature indicating both the existence and absence of radiation damage to the SNAP shields. It is believed that there is a high probability that there will be damage and that it will adversely affect the properties of the shield. This damage may take the form of: (1) volume expansion of the hybrids, (2) void formation within the hybrids, and (3) gas pressure build-up in the shield container. Based upon the results of experiments with lithium fluoride, which may serve as a model for the hydride, there appears to be a threshold neutron dose which volume expansion effects can not be removed by annealing. Similarly, above the threshold dose, intercrystalline voids, formed as a result of radiation damage, appear to increase in size with increasing temperature. It has been established that at the SNAP shield operating conditions, essentially all of the hydrogen formed will recombine with free lithium. The helium atoms, however, remain trapped interstitially, in intercrystalline voids, or along subgrain boundaries. Appreciable amounts of helium gas are not released until the melting point of the hydride is approached. An insignificant portion of the hydrogen in the shield is lost by permeation of the stainless steel shield container at the SNAP 10 operating conditions. 23 refs.

Book Elucidation of Environmental Influences on the Initiation of Lithium Hydride Hydrolysis

Download or read book Elucidation of Environmental Influences on the Initiation of Lithium Hydride Hydrolysis written by Roy P. Awbery and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lithium hydride (LiH) is an important material used in the manufacture of nuclear warheads, space vehicle radiation shielding and as a constituent in modern batteries and potential future vehicular fuel cells. In all of these applications, LiH is generally contained within a sealed metal vessel and due to its high affinity with water vapour is handled under dry gas conditions. Despite storing and handling in dry conditions it is almost impossible to maintain LiH in a pure state with water vapour of just 1 ppm being sufficient to provide a measurable surface coating of hydrolysis product. The aim of this study was to use both surface and bulk analytical techniques to investigate the hydrolysis of LiH under specific conditions of water vapour exposure.

Book Investigation of Natural and Man Made Radiation Effects on Crews on Long Duration Space Missions

Download or read book Investigation of Natural and Man Made Radiation Effects on Crews on Long Duration Space Missions written by Wesley E. Bolch and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The radiation transport code MCNP has been used to make initial estimates of crew exposures to reactor radiation fields for a specific manned nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) vehicle design. In this design, three 25 MW(sub th), scaled SP-100-class reactors are shielded by three identical shields. Each shield has layers of beryllium, tungsten, and lithium hydride between the reactor and the crew compartment. Separate calculations are made of both the exiting neutron and gamma fluxes from the reactors during beginning-of-life, full-power operation. This data is then used as the source terms for particle transport in MCNP.

Book Study to Reduce and Compile Usaf Nap Radiation Effects Data

Download or read book Study to Reduce and Compile Usaf Nap Radiation Effects Data written by E. R. Beever and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irradiation tests were performed on 2300 electronic piece parts to determine the effects of reactor-produced radiation on their operational characteristics. The irradiations were performed in a lithium hydride modified reactor environment to integrated motion fluxes greater than 10 to the 13th power n/sq cm (E>0.1 Mev) and gamma doses in excess of 2 x 10 to the 7th power Rad (C). The vast amount of data generated in this test was reduced to approximately six pertinent data points and recorded on computer library file cards along with information such as piece part application, manufacturer, manufacturing process, etc., concerning each electronic piece part. Book Investigation of Natural and Man Made Radiation Effects on Crews on Long Duration Space Missions

This book was released on 2018-07-18 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several years, NASA has studied a variety of mission scenarios designed to establish a permanent human presence on the surface of Mars. Nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) is one of the possible elements in this program. During the initial stages of vehicle design work, careful consideration must be given to not only the shielding requirements of natural space radiation, but to the shielding and configuration requirements of the on-board reactors. In this work, the radiation transport code MCNP has been used to make initial estimates of crew exposures to reactor radiation fields for a specific manned NEP vehicle design. The total gamma and neutron fluxes exiting the reactor shields are recorded and separate transport calculations are then performed for a 10 g/sq cm crew compartment aluminum thickness. Estimates of crew exposures have been assessed for various thicknesses of the shield tungsten and lithium hydride layers. A minimal tungsten thickness of 20 cm is required to shield the reactor photons below the 0.05 Sv/y man-made radiation limit. In addition to a 20-cm thick tungsten layer, a 40-cm thick lithium hydride layer is required to shield the reactor neutrons below the annual limit. If the tungsten layer is 30-cm thick, the lithium hydride layer should be at least 30-cm thick. These estimates do not take into account the photons generated by neutron interactions inside the shield because the MCNP neutron cross sections did not allow reliable estimates of photon production in these materials. These results, along with n...
