Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The considerable increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer in children in areas exposed to the fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident has drawn attention to the need for a better understanding of the relationship between radiation exposure (especially from the radionuclides of iodine) and the risk of thyroid cancer. An increase in thyroid cancer has been reported both in patients exposed to therapeutic and diagnostic external radiation, and in the population exposed to radiation from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs. While there is no evidence of a significant increase of this cancer in patients treated with radioactive iodine, an increase in thyroid cancer incidence was found in the Marshall Islands population after exposure to the fallout from a thermonuclear explosion, and now an increase has been observed in children exposed to the fallout from Chernobyl. This volume constitutes the proceedings of the first international conference on the relationship between radiation and thyroid cancer — a very important area of research. Besides addressing the link between radiation and thyroid cancer, it examines the many factors influencing the interactions between radiation and the thyroid cell.

Book Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation

Download or read book Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation written by Committee to Assess Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-03-23 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the seventh in a series of titles from the National Research Council that addresses the effects of exposure to low dose LET (Linear Energy Transfer) ionizing radiation and human health. Updating information previously presented in the 1990 publication, Health Effects of Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation: BEIR V, this book draws upon new data in both epidemiologic and experimental research. Ionizing radiation arises from both natural and man-made sources and at very high doses can produce damaging effects in human tissue that can be evident within days after exposure. However, it is the low-dose exposures that are the focus of this book. So-called “late” effects, such as cancer, are produced many years after the initial exposure. This book is among the first of its kind to include detailed risk estimates for cancer incidence in addition to cancer mortality. BEIR VII offers a full review of the available biological, biophysical, and epidemiological literature since the last BEIR report on the subject and develops the most up-to-date and comprehensive risk estimates for cancer and other health effects from exposure to low-level ionizing radiation.

Book The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology

Download or read book The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology written by Syed Z. Ali and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-20 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas is the offspring of the “The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) State of the Science Conference,” hosted by the NCI and organized by Dr. Andrea Abati. Preparations for the conference began 18 months earlier with the designation of a steering committee and the establishment of a dedicated, p- manent web site. The meeting took place on October 22 and 23, 2007 in Bethesda, Maryland and was co-moderated by Susan J. Mandel and Edmund S. Cibas. The discussions and conclusions regarding terminology and morphologic criteria 1, 2 from the meeting were summarized in publications by Baloch et al. and form the framework for this atlas. The atlas is organized by the general categories of “Nondiagnostic,” “Benign,” “Follicular Neoplasm/Suspicious for a Follicular Neoplasm”, “Suspicious for Malignancy,” and “Malignant,” and it includes the defi- tions and morphologic criteria of these categories as set forth by Baloch et al. The majority of the conference participants also agreed on a category of “undetermined significance,” which is incorporated in this atlas (Chap. 4). It is critical that the cytopathologist communicate thyroid FNA interpretations to the referring physician in terms that are succinct, unambiguous, and helpful clinically. We recognize that the terminology used here is a flexible framework that can be modified by individual laboratories to meet the needs of their providers and the patients they serve.

Book Distribution and Administration of Potassium Iodide in the Event of a Nuclear Incident

Download or read book Distribution and Administration of Potassium Iodide in the Event of a Nuclear Incident written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-12-17 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radioactive iodines are produced during the operation of nuclear power plants and during the detonation of nuclear weapons. In the event of a radiation incident, radioiodine is one of the contaminants that could be released into the environment. Exposure to radioiodine can lead to radiation injury to the thyroid, including thyroid cancer. Radiation to the thyroid from radioiodine can be limited by taking a nonradioactive iodine (stable iodine) such as potassium iodide. This book assesses strategies for the distribution and administration of potassium iodide (KI) in the event of a nuclear incident. The report says that potassium iodide pills should be available to everyone age 40 or youngerâ€"especially children and pregnant and lactating womenâ€"living near a nuclear power plant. States and municipalities should decide how to stockpile, distribute, and administer potassium iodide tablets, and federal agencies should keep a backup supply of tablets and be prepared to distribute them to affected areas.

Book The Arctic Aeromedical Laboratory s Thyroid Function Study

Download or read book The Arctic Aeromedical Laboratory s Thyroid Function Study written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-02-26 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1950s, with the Cold War looming, military planners sought to know more about how to keep fighting forces fit and capable in the harsh Alaskan environment. In 1956 and 1957, the U.S. Air Force's former Arctic Aeromedical Laboratory conducted a study of the role of the thyroid in human acclimatization to cold. To measure thyroid function under various conditions, the researchers administered a radioactive medical trace, Iodine-131, to Alaska Natives and white military personnel; based on the study results, the researchers determined that the thyroid did not play a significant role in human acclimatization to cold. When this study of thyroid function was revisited at a 1993 conference on the Cold War legacy in the Arctic, serious questions were raised about the appropriateness of the activityâ€"whether it posed risks to the people involved and whether the research had been conducted within the bounds of accepted guidelines for research using human participants. In particular, there was concern over the relatively large proportion of Alaska Natives used as subjects and whether they understood the nature of the study. This book evaluates the research in detail, looking at both the possible health effects of Iodine-131 administration in humans and the ethics of human subjects research. This book presents conclusions and recommendations and is a significant addition to the nation's current reevaluation of human radiation experiments conducted during the Cold War.

Book Essentials of Thyroid Cancer Management

Download or read book Essentials of Thyroid Cancer Management written by Ernest L. Mazzaferri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to provide Endocrinologists, Surgeons, Nuclear Medicine Physicians, and Radiation Oncologists with practical advice about managing patients with thyroid cancer. This book will not replace the excellent publications that focus on a highly speci?c topic or provide an exhaustive review of major s- jects from the perspective of a particular specialty. These kinds of publications will always be an important source of information for both students and expe- enced practitioners. The void that we see is the lack of a single, concise, up-- date reference that is applicable to all of the specialists who make clinical de- sions about thyroid cancer patients. Essentials of Thyroid Cancer Management will ?ll this void in a manner that is both user-friendly and technically compreh- sive. For reading ef?ciency, this book contains the minimum of text required to explain how to make sound clinical decisions in speci?c situations. We rely heavily on tables, diagrams, graphs, photographs, and other ?gures to convey this information. Subjects are addressed in a large number of chapters that each focus on a relatively narrow topic. In some cases, there is overlap between the information in multiple different chapters so the reader does not have to page back and forth between different sections of the book. As occurs in every area of medicine, there is controversy about important issues in the management of thyroid cancer.

Book Exposure of the American People to Iodine 131 from Nevada Nuclear Bomb Tests

Download or read book Exposure of the American People to Iodine 131 from Nevada Nuclear Bomb Tests written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-06-17 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, after more than a decade of research, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) released a report which provided their assessment of radiation exposures that Americans may have received from radioactive iodine released from the atomic bomb tests conducted in Nevada during the 1950s and early 1960s. This book provides an evaluation of the soundness of the methodology used by the NCI study to estimate: Past radiation doses. Possible health consequences of exposure to iodine-131. Implications for clinical practice. Possible public health strategiesâ€"such as systematic screening for thyroid cancerâ€"to respond to the exposures. In addition, the book provides an evaluation of the NCI estimates of the number of thyroid cancers that might result from the nuclear testing program and provides guidance on approaches the U.S. government might use to communicate with the public about Iodine-131 exposures and health risks.

Book Target Volume Delineation and Field Setup

Download or read book Target Volume Delineation and Field Setup written by Nancy Y. Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-18 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook will enable radiation oncologists to appropriately and confidently select and delineate tumor volumes/fields for conformal radiation therapy, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), in patients with commonly encountered cancers. The orientation of this handbook is entirely practical, in that the focus is on the illustration of clinical target volume (CTV) delineation for each major malignancy. Each chapter provides guidelines and concise knowledge on treatment planning and CTV selection, explains how the anatomy of lymphatic drainage shapes target volume selection, and presents detailed illustrations of delineations, slice by slice, on planning CT images. While the emphasis is on target volume delineation for three-dimensional conformal therapy and IMRT, information is also provided on conventional radiation therapy field setup and planning for certain malignancies for which IMRT is not currently suitable.
