Download or read book Animal Intimacies written by Radhika Govindrajan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A delightful read [and] an important addition to human-animal relations studies.” —Anthropology Matters What does it mean to live and die in relation to other animals? Animal Intimacies posits this central question alongside the intimate—and intense—moments of care, kinship, violence, politics, indifference, and desire that occur between human and non-human animals. Built on extensive ethnographic fieldwork in the mountain villages of India’s Central Himalayas, Radhika Govindrajan’s book explores the number of ways that human and animal interact to cultivate relationships as interconnected, related beings. Whether it is through the study of the affect and ethics of ritual animal sacrifice, analysis of the right-wing political project of cow-protection, or examination of villagers’ talk about bears who abduct women and have sex with them, Govindrajan illustrates that multispecies relatedness relies on both difference and ineffable affinity between animals. Animal Intimacies breaks substantial new ground in animal studies, and Govindrajan’s detailed portrait of the social, political and religious life of the region will be of interest to cultural anthropologists and scholars of South Asia as well. “Immerses us in passionate case studies on the multiple relationships between Kumaoni villagers and animals in Uttarakhand.” —European Bulletin of Himalayan Research “A memorable and innovative ethnography.” —Piers Locke, University of Canterbury
Download or read book Radical Product Thinking written by R. Dutt and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iteration rules product development, but it isn't enough to produce dramatic results. This book champions Radical Product Thinking, a systematic methodology for building visionary, game-changing products. In the last decade, we've learned to harness the power of iteration to innovate faster—we've invested in a fast car, but our ability to set a clear destination and navigate to it hasn't kept up. When we iterate without a clear vision or strategy, our products become bloated, fragmented, and driven by irrelevant metrics. They catch “product diseases” that often kill innovation. Radical Product Thinking (RPT) gives organizations a repeatable model for building world-changing products. The key? Being vision-driven instead of iteration-led. R. Dutt guides readers through the five elements of the methodology (vision, strategy, prioritization, execution and measurement, and culture) to develop a clear process for translating vision into reality, and turning RPT skills into muscle memory. This book offers refreshing solutions to the shortcomings of our current model for product development; be prepared to toss out everything you know about a good vision and learn how to measure progress to create revolutionary products. The best part? You don't have to be a natural-born visionary to produce extraordinary results.

Download or read book The Coolie s Great War written by Radhika Singha and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though largely invisible in histories of the First World War, over??550,000 men in the ranks of the Indian army were non-combatants. From the porters, stevedores and construction workers in the Coolie Corps to those who maintained supply lines and removed the wounded from the battlefield, Radhika Singha recovers the story of this unacknowledged service. The labor regimes built on the backs of these 'coolies' sustained the military infrastructure of empire; their deployment in interregional arenas bent to the demands of global war. Viewed as racially subordinate and subject to 'non-martial' caste designations, they fought back against their status, using the warring powers' need for manpower as leverage to challenge traditional service hierarchies and wage differentials. The Coolie's Great War views that global conflict through the lens of Indian labor, constructing a distinct geography of the war--from tribal settlements and colonial jails, beyond India's frontiers, to the battlefronts of France and Mesopotamia.

Download or read book It s Our Prom So Deal With It written by Julie Anne Peters and published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this funny and heartfelt novel from National Book Award finalist Julie Anne Peters, planning an alternative prom might not be as simple as it seems—especially when secret crushes are involved. When Azure's principal gives her the chance to turn the school's traditional (and boring) senior prom into an event that will appeal to everyone, not just the jocks and cheerleaders, she jumps at the opportunity. Soon Azure manages to convince her best friends, Luke and Radhika, to join the prom committee as well. Facing heavy opposition and admittedly clueless about prom logistics, the three friends are nonetheless determined to succeed—if Luke's and Azure's secret crushes on Radhika don't push the committee members, and their friendships, to the breaking point first. Told in two voices and filled with comical missed connections, It's Our Prom (So Deal With It) explores the ups and downs of planning an alternative prom—while dealing with an unrequited crush on your best friend—and shines with Peters's unmistakable wit and insight.

It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. The notion of development influences and is influenced by all aspects of human life. Social science is but one representational option among many for conveying the myriad ways in which development is conceived, encountered, experienced, justified, courted, and/or resisted by different groups at particular times and places. As international development has become more quantitative and economics-centred, there is an enduring sense that what is measured (and thus 'valued' and prioritized) may have become too narrow, that the powers of prediction claimed by some areas of economics and management may have overreached, and that the human dimension is in danger of being lost. Reflecting this concern, New Mediums, Better Messages? contributes to new conversations between science, social science, and the humanities around the roles of different kinds of knowledge, stories, and data play in relation to global development. It brings together a team of multidisciplinary contributors to explore popular representions of development, including music, blogs, and fiction.

Download or read book The Last Karma written by Ankita Jain and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-07 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was never meant to be a writer, but I had the desire to narrate a few incidents and that got the writer inside me working. Before you start reading this story, I would like to mention that, this story is inspired by true events and the fictional changes that have been made are to protect the identity of the people involved. However, it has no relation whatsoever to anyone bearing the same name or names. Becoming a writer from a person belonging to a core technical background wasnt that easy. However, there are stories that force you to pick up a pen so that people can learn a lesson even without living the same in their own lives. All of us do something of our choice but not everyone is aware of the fact that commitment to see something through to completion is the essence of the efforts of a lot of people. There are so many people who are responsible in ways big and small, for this book being a reality today. I couldnt have done it without the support I received from all those people who always played an important role in my life and I know they will always be there. To each one of you, I pay my humble and most heartfelt thanks.
