Book Radar Sonar and Holography

Download or read book Radar Sonar and Holography written by Winston E. Kock and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radar, Sonar, and Holography: An Introduction provides an introduction to the technology of radar and sonar. Because the new science of holography is affecting both these fields quite strongly, the book includes an explanation of the fundamental principles underlying this new art (including the subjects of wave coherence, interference, and diffraction) and of the hologram process itself. Finally, numerous examples are discussed which show how holography is providing new horizons to radar and sonar systems. The book thus also provides a simple approach to the new technology of holography. The discussions clarify the basic difference that exist between photography and holography, on the one hand, and between standard sonar and radar, on the other; and the hologram versions of these two technologies. The book should be useful as a supplementary reading assignment to early college students in science and engineering, and also to senior high students having a bent for science and engineering.

Book Engineering Applications of Lasers and Holography

Download or read book Engineering Applications of Lasers and Holography written by Winston Kock and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended for upperclass college students as an introduction to the growing field of coherent optics and to the increasing number of its applications, and also for those versed in other fields who wish to gain per spective and insight without detailed calculations. It is an outgrowth of the author's Science Study Series book Lasers and HolographY. * Besides being an updated and expanded version of that book, it includes discussions of numerous recent applications. It differs in its slightly higher analytical level and in the inclusion oflarge numbers of references, which enable the reader to obtain further information on subjects of interest to him. The level was selected to match the capabilities of students in their middle college years so as to permit them to make an early assessment of possible career interests in any of the many interdisciplinary fields now embracing the technologies of modern optics. It is hoped that the book can be used (as has occurred rather extensively with another of the author's Science Study Series books, Sound Waves and Light Wavest) as an auxiliary reading assignment for students in various disciplines. The author strongly believes that the promise of continued growth in this field, as evidenced by the extensive participation in technology develop ments by industry, both within the U. S. and abroad, identifies the subject as * Doubleday, 1969 (hard cover and paperback).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holography has matured over the years since it was first invented by Dennis Gabor and further developed by many workers during the last decade. With some applications a commercial reality and many more continually appearing, it is now possible to compile a volume devoted to the applications of holography. This book consists primarily of papers presented at the second U.S. Japan Seminar on holography, held in Washington, D.C., from October 20-27, 1969, under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences, National Science Foundation, and the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science. In addition to most of the papers presented at the seminar, several others are included because they cover important applications which are appropriate to this volume. Attendance at the seminar was limited to ten delegates from each country; these delegates being chosen so as to permit the seminar to include as wide a range of subjects as possible, with each delegate being recognized as an authority in his particular field of holography. In addition, Dr. Gilbert Devey (Program 'Director for Engineering Systems for the National Science Foundation, and the one most responsible for making the seminar possible), Professor Wolf F.

Download or read book Acoustical Holography written by A. Metherell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only a space limitation of 115 seats prevented this First International Symposium on Acoustical Holography from having an attendance of over 250. Unfortunately, the size of the auditorium of the Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories required that attendance be by invitation only, and many deserving and interested scientists could not be present. This volume presents the proceedings of the symposium, and hopefully will help compen sate those individuals who were unable to attend. The symposium itself consisted of sixteen formal papers. The seven teenth, by Dr. P. Greguss, was not received in time to be read but is included in these proceedings. The presence of Professor Dennis Gabor considerably enhanced the informal sessions, which frequently became as spirited as one might expect in a new field. Dr. H. M. A. El-Sum, a consultant to the Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories and a pioneer in the field of holography, set the stage with the first paper. He provided a general introduction to the physical principles and practical methods involved in optical and acoustical holography. His paper also included a summary of various specific techniques currently used in sound holography, with the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations involved for each approach.

This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to the applications of holographic techniques for microwave and millimeter wave imaging Real-Time Three-Dimensional Imaging of Dielectric Bodies Using Microwave/Millimeter Wave Holography offers an authoritative guide to the field of microwave holography for the specific application of imaging dielectric bodies. The authors—noted experts on the topic—review the early works in the area of optical and microwave holographic imaging and explore recent advances of the microwave and millimeter wave imaging techniques. These techniques are based on the measurement of both magnitude and phase over an aperture and then implementing digital image reconstruction. The book presents developments in the microwave holographic techniques for near-field imaging applications such as biomedical imaging and non-destructive testing of materials. The authors also examine novel holographic techniques to gain super-resolution or quantitative images. The book also includes a discussion of the capabilities and limitations of holographic reconstruction techniques and provides recommendations for overcoming many of the limitations. This important book: • Describes the evolution of wide-band microwave holography techniques from synthetic aperture radar principles • Explores two major approaches to near-field microwave holography: Using the incident field and Green's function information and using point-spread function of the imaging system • Introduces the "diffraction limit" in the resolution for techniques that are based on the Born approximation, and provides techniques to overcome this limit Written for students and research associates in microwave and millimeter wave engineering, Real-Time Three-Dimensional Imaging of Dielectric Bodies Using Microwave/Millimeter Wave Holography reviews microwave and millimeter-wave imaging techniques based on the holographic principles and provides information on the most current developments.

Book excerpt: Now that holography has matured (wIth Dennis Gabor having received the Nobel Prize In 1971) and that coherent optics has proved to be even more powerful than originally imagined, in open ing the new field of "optical computing," it is particularlyappropri ate to make available to English-speaking readers the translation of a uniquely outstanding text which presents the general and per manent foundations of the field. L. M. Soroko's book has proved its usefulness, since It ap peared in Russian In 1971, following the basic pattern set in the world's first monograph In the field, "An Introduction to Coherent Optics and Holography," written by G. w. Stroke in 1966, and since also available in Its second US edition (1969) from Academic Press, following the publication of its Russian edition by Mlr In 1967. To further enhance the usefulness of L. M. Soroko's book, and to assure that Its fundamental nature be completely updated, the Translation Editor, In agreement with the author, felt that this could best be assured by including an "updating appendix" In the form of three recent papers In the general field of "opto-dlgltal holographic Image processing and 3-D reconstructions," especially -also since their bibliographies Include numerous further refer ences to a great many authors and workers throughout the world.

Download or read book The Creative Engineer written by Winston Kock and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic growth and strength of a nation are directly related to the ability of its people to make discoveries and their ability to transform these discoveries into useful products. Ninety percent of the increase in output per capita in the United States from 1909 to 1949 has been held to be attributable to technological advances. In this book, we examine the ways in which a number of important new technologies came into being and review the characteristic traits of inventors who create new technologies. Ways are suggested that could enable young and old alike to become more creative, and the various benefits they can thereby reap are also discussed. A high level of creativity is an important asset for a nation, and therefore a knowledge of ways to increase inventiveness can be of great value. University of Cincinnati President Warren Bennis has noted that "creativity is something most of us seem to lose, or let atrophy, as we leave childhood."· To "rediscover it," he continues, "we must find ways of re-creating our sense of wondering why, of heightening, even altering, our consciousness." Thus the earlier in life one seeks to enhance his creativity, the more successful the results are likely to be.

Download or read book Progress in Electro Optics written by Ezio Camatini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in systems technology are creating the need for alphanumeric displays and component technology to satisfy this need. The field of alphanumeric displays covers appli cations from the single character lift indicator to the thousand-plus character computer read out. A survey of the state of alphanumeric displays helps the user of display devices to make a choice, for a particular application, between the various devices available now or in the near future. It is essential to consider the circuits and the display device together in order to obtain a clear picture of the economics of the different techniques. In general, a display module is controlled by binary input signals at normal logic pow ers and may be subdivided into five basic elements: 1) data memory, 2) character generator, 3) driving circuits, 4) scanning circuits, and 5) display device. The data memory is essential to make the display module independent of the system. Normally, this will be an electronic memory, but in some cases, the display device will have an inherent memory. The character generator must perform two functions: 1) convert the binary code to a 'lout of n' form to select the chosen character out of the on' available, and 2) create the character format, although in some cases this is inherent in the display device.
