Book excerpt: Research in through-the-wall radar (TTWR) is a recent area of focus and as such many challenges have arisen related to target detection, location, and tracking. These types of radar systems are often plagued by harsh clutter scenarios caused by the variety and abundance of furniture elements within the antenna's field-of-view which in turn degrade the radars ability to accurately detect targets. Furthermore, once an object is located, having the ability to identify the object under consideration is still an on ongoing research problem. This dissertation has two main focuses. The first analyzes and investigates the spectral signatures of indoor clutter elements through their radar cross section (RCS). The characterization of the wideband spectral properties for indoor clutter elements is accomplished using finite difference time domain (FDTD) techniques. Using FDTD, the spectral characteristics of clutter elements were obtained over a wide range of frequencies and aspect angles at different transmit-receive polarization combinations. The spectral properties are then compared and contrasted between the different objects as well as human biological models for analysis and use in TTWR. The RCS results obtained from the simulations are then compared to experimental data collected using a wideband network analyzer. The second main topic is the use of machine learning algorithms, specifically Support Vector Machines (SVMs) to construct models from the previously acquired spectral signatures to aid in target classification. Utilizing variables of frequency and polarization, a SVM classifier can be constructed to classify unknown targets as either human or clutter object. Additionally, the application of feature selection algorithms are applied to the spectral characteristics to reduce the model complexity and determine the SVM classification accuracy of a reduced dataset. Finally, the classification performance is assessed in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and through various wall materials.

On an ensemble average basis, the clutter appears as additive noise from which the existence of a prescribed target return must be extracted.

In the first phase, we consider modeling and estimating the characteristic parameters of high resolution non-Gaussian sea clutter. We will investigate specifically nonstationarity and possible non-Gaussianity of the clutter on long period of time, by applying nonhomogeneity tests and spectral analysis to highlight the temporal changes of the clutter process. The analyses of high resolution clutter will be performed by processing complex clutter data collected in November 1993 and in winter 1998 with the high resolution IPIX radar, provided by McMaster University, at a range resolution of 60 m, 30 m, 15 m, 9 m, and 3 m, in like- (HH-VV) and crosspolarizations (HV-VH) An accurate characterization of the high resolution radar clutter allows a more adequate design of the radar detector of targets. This detector needs to be adaptive to the data and should have the ability to comply with the non-homogeneous nature of the clutter interference. This aspect of the problem will be discussed in the second phase of this study. A detailed analysis of the impact of the nonstationarity of the clutter will be performed first analytically (where possible) and by means of simulations; then we will use the real recorded data to feed adaptive detectors, designed for stationary Gaussian and non-Gaussian clutter, and we will compare theoretical and simulated performance with real data performance.

The selection of attributes is a heuristic, nonexhaustive process, and each target is eventually described in a statistical sense by the frequency of occurrence of the binary attributes. Book excerpt: Radar offers unique advantages over other sensors for the detection of humans, such as remote operation during virtually all weather and lighting conditions, increased range, and better coverage. Many current radar-based human detection systems employ some type of Fourier analysis, such as Doppler processing. However, in many environments, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of human returns is quite low. Furthermore, Fourier-based techniques assume a linear variation in target phase over the aperture, whereas human targets have a highly nonlinear phase history. The resulting phase mismatch causes significant SNR loss in the detector itself. In this work, human target modeling is used to derive a more accurate non-linear approximation to the true target phase history. Two algorithms are proposed: a parameter estimation-based optimized non-linear phase (ONLP) detector, and a dictionary search-based enhanced optimized non-linear phase (EnONLP) detector. The ONLP algorithm optimizes the likelihood ratio over the unknown model parameters to derive a more accurate approximation to the expected human return. The EnONLP algorithm stores expected target signatures generated for each possible combination of model parameters in a dictionary, and then applies Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) to determine the optimal linear combination of dictionary entries that comprises the measured radar data. Thus, unlike the ONLP, the EnONLP algorithm also has the capability of detecting the presence of multiple human targets. Cramer-Rao bounds (CRB) on parameter estimates and receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves are used to validate analytically the performance of both proposed methods to that of conventional, fully adaptive STAP. Finally, application of EnONLP to target characterization is illustrated.
