Book excerpt: THE ORIGINAL UNABRIDGED VERSION-UPDATED PLOT-NEW ENDING A MUST READ! - Kirkus Indie Review, December 19, 2017 The French flag signals the start of the 24-hour adrenaline rush of Le Mans, the most famous auto race in the world, which provides the backdrop of a terror plot by Muslim jihadists to assassinate the leaders of the free world. Tygre, the beautiful heroine of The Racing Heart, becomes an unwilling pawn caught between the international forces of money, power, sex, and fanaticism. The story follows Tygre's transformation from her childhood in Poland to her coming of age through her experiences as a top supermodel, which affords her entrée into rarefied levels of high society, wealth, and power. The Racing Heart, a romantic thriller, is a gripping roller-coaster of emotions, events, and determination to overcome impossible odds. Will Tygre survive an international terror plot? Does she have what it takes to abandon her comfort level and reveal her true character? Will she find true love she has been searching for all her life? In the whirlwind of intrigue, Tygre is forced to adjust her skewed sense of values, display intelligence and gather the courage to emerge transformed and victorious. The Racing Heart has the emotion of Love Story and the thrill of Le Mans wrapped with insider perception into global terror. The novel is peppered with rich, powerful, abusive men who helped determine the course of Tygre's rise to fame, leading up to the über-villains, epitomized by the pill-popping Khalil Karim and his pathologically malevolent assistant and lover, Malik Youssaf. Flashbacks reveal the personal journey of a romantic, high-spirited teenage girl from Poland. The narrative progresses quickly, comfortably vacillating between present and past. The behind-the-scenes details and dangers of Le Mans racing ring true and function well as a compelling foil for the simultaneous life and death drama being taking place off the racecourse.www.theracingheart.com VARIOUS TESTIMONIALS ABOUT THE RACING HEART"The Racing Heart's alright!"-Tom Clancy, author of The Hunt of Red October, Dead or Alive, Without Remorse and many other titles."A page turning exploration of the curse and ecstasy of female beauty and sensuality against the backdrop of a terror plot during the 25 Hours of Le Mans, the most prestigious auto race in the world." -Warren Adler, author of The War of the Roses and Randon Hearts."So glad to hear The Racing Heart's success. I was not able to put it down from the moment I started it, so much so that I devoured it in just two days.’ Goodreads reviewer Natasha Mayston wasn’t expecting anyone to knock on her door so late at night. And she has no idea that the face staring back at her is the last one she’ll ever see… As Detective Dan Lockhart is called to a wealthy London street to investigate Natasha’s death, he’s startled by the similarity to a previous case. Noticing the cable-tie restraints and the tiny scratches on Natasha’s wedding finger, Dan already knows what he will find if he looks in her mouth – the metal ball which choked her to death. He knows Natasha isn’t the killer’s first victim and is certain that he will strike again. Months earlier, Kim Hardy was found in the same position in a run-down hotel across the city – an identical silver ball in her throat. But Kim’s murderer was caught and sent to prison – did they arrest the wrong man? And what connects the two victims? Fearing that he’s dealing with a psychopathic serial killer, Dan calls in psychologist Dr Lexi Green to help him to get into the perpetrator’s mind. Tough and smart, Lexi will stop at nothing to hunt down the man responsible for the deaths. Then, another body is discovered, just as Lexi finds a clue online leading to the killer. Dan’s team aren’t convinced, but in pushing Lexi away from the investigation, they force her to dig further into the case on her own. Convinced that she’s on to something, she puts herself in unthinkable danger… but can Dan piece together the clues and identify the killer before it’s too late? Book Heart of Dankness

Download or read book Heart of Dankness written by Mark Haskell Smith and published by Crown. This book was released on 2012-04-03 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reporting for the Los Angeles Times on the international blind tasting competition held annually in Amsterdam known as the Cannabis Cup, novelist Mark Haskell Smith sampled a variety of marijuana that was unlike anything he’d experienced. It wasn’t anything like typical stoner weed, in fact it didn’t get you stoned. This cannabis possessed an ephemeral quality known to aficionados as “dankness.” Armed with a State of California Medical Marijuana recommendation, he begins a journey into the international underground where super-high-grade marijuana is developed and tracks down the rag-tag community of underground botanists, outlaw farmers, and renegade strain hunters who pursue excellence and diversity in marijuana, defying the law to find new flavors, tastes, and effects. This unrelenting pursuit of dankness climaxes at the Cannabis Cup, which Haskell Smith vividly portrays as the Super Bowl/Mardi Gras of the world's largest cash crop.

Book excerpt: A powerful document of the day-to-day realities of Black women in Britain The Heart of the Race is a powerful corrective to a version of Britain’s history from which black women have long been excluded. It reclaims and records black women’s place in that history, documenting their day-to-day struggles, their experiences of education, work and health care, and the personal and political struggles they have waged to preserve a sense of identity and community. First published in 1985 and winner of the Martin Luther King Memorial Prize that year, The Heart of the Race is a testimony to the collective experience of black women in Britain, and their relationship to the British state throughout its long history of slavery, empire and colonialism. This new edition includes a foreword by Lola Okolosie and an interview with the authors, chaired by Heidi Safia Mirza, focusing on the impact of their book since publication and its continuing relevance today

Download or read book Every Second Counts written by Donald McRae and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic race to transplant the first human heart spanned two years, three continents and five cities against a backdrop of searing tension, scientific brilliance, ethical controversy, racial strife and emotional turmoil. It culminated in a terrifying moment in the early hours of 3 December 1967 when, in a cramped operating theatre in a Cape Town hospital, Professor Chris Barnard stared into an empty cavity from which he had just removed a heart. He knew that he had only minutes left to make history and save the life of a 55-year-old man by filling the gaping hole in his chest with a heart which had just been beating inside a 25-year-old woman. Every Second Countsis the story of this gripping race to conquer the greatest of medical challenges. It also reveals the truth about the man at the centre of it all, whose turbulent life story was just as gripping. The kind of true story that would be dismissed as far-fetched if presented as fiction, it combines an utterly compelling portrait of cutting-edge science with raw human drama, and shows how the course of medicine itself was changed for ever.

Book Medicating Race

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anne Pollock
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2012-10-02
  • ISBN : 082235344X
  • Pages : 277 pages

Download or read book Medicating Race written by Anne Pollock and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Medicating Race, Anne Pollock traces the intersecting discourses of race, pharmaceuticals, and heart disease in the United States over the past century, from the founding of cardiology through the FDA's approval of BiDil, the first drug sanctioned for use in a specific race. She examines wide-ranging aspects of the dynamic interplay of race and heart disease: articulations, among the founders of American cardiology, of heart disease as a modern, and therefore white, illness; constructions of "normal" populations in epidemiological research, including the influential Framingham Heart Study; debates about the distinctiveness African American hypertension, which turn on disparate yet intersecting arguments about genetic legacies of slavery and the comparative efficacy of generic drugs; and physician advocacy for the urgent needs of black patients on professional, scientific, and social justice grounds. Ultimately, Pollock insists that those grappling with the meaning of racialized medical technologies must consider not only the troubled history of race and biomedicine but also its fraught yet vital present. Medical treatment should be seen as a site of, rather than an alternative to, political and social contestation. The aim of scholarly analysis should not be to settle matters of race and genetics, but to hold medicine more broadly accountable to truth and justice.

Book Resisting Brown

Download or read book Resisting Brown written by Candace Epps-Robertson and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many localities in America resisted integration in the aftermath of the Brown v. Board of Education rulings (1954, 1955). Virginia’s Prince Edward County stands as perhaps the most extreme. Rather than fund integrated schools, the county’s board of supervisors closed public schools from 1959 until 1964. The only formal education available for those locked out of school came in 1963 when the combined efforts of Prince Edward’s African American community and aides from President John F. Kennedy’s administration established the Prince Edward County Free School Association (Free School). This temporary school system would serve just over 1,500 students, both black and white, aged 6 through 23. Drawing upon extensive archival research, Resisting Brown presents the Free School as a site in which important rhetorical work took place. Candace Epps-Robertson analyzes public discourse that supported the school closures as an effort and manifestation of citizenship and demonstrates how the establishment of the Free School can be seen as a rhetorical response to white supremacist ideologies. The school’s mission statements, philosophies, and commitment to literacy served as arguments against racialized constructions of citizenship. Prince Edward County stands as a microcosm of America’s struggle with race, literacy, and citizenship.

Book Rapid Prototyping in Cardiac Disease

Download or read book Rapid Prototyping in Cardiac Disease written by Kanwal Majeed Farooqi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-26 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the use of rapid prototyping in patients with cardiac pathology. With the exponential increase in the use of prototyping, or 3D printing technology, medical applications are becoming more widespread across specialties. Although medical centers are beginning to apply this technology for improved patient care, there is no single text to which specialists can refer for guidance about this emerging modality. The book discusses the use of rapid prototyping in medicine; model creation; image acquisition; rapid prototyping techniques; applications in congenital and structural heart disease; and development and management of a rapid prototyping service. The use of rapid prototyping for pre-procedural planning in patients with cardiac disorders such as septal defects, Tetralogy of Fallot, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, and ventricular assist devices and heart transplant significantly enhances visualization of cardiovascular anatomy. Rapid Prototyping in Cardiac Disease is a unique and valuable resource for cardiac imaging specialists, cardiothoracic surgeons, radiologists, and biomedical engineers.

Book excerpt: The astonishing untold story of the WWII airmen who risked it all in the deadly race to become the greatest American fighter pilot. In 1942, America's deadliest fighter pilot, or "ace of aces" -- the legendary Eddie Rickenbacker -- offered a bottle of bourbon to the first U.S. fighter pilot to break his record of twenty-six enemy planes shot down. Seizing on the challenge to motivate his men, General George Kenney promoted what they would come to call the "race of aces" as a way of boosting the spirits of his war-weary command. What developed was a wild three-year sprint for fame and glory, and the chance to be called America's greatest fighter pilot. The story has never been told until now. Based on new research and full of revelations, John Bruning's brilliant, original book tells the story of how five American pilots contended for personal glory in the Pacific while leading Kenney's resurgent air force against the most formidable enemy America ever faced. The pilots -- Richard Bong, Tommy McGuire, Neel Kearby, Charles MacDonald and Gerald Johnson -- riveted the nation as they contended for Rickenbacker's crown. As their scores mounted, they transformed themselves from farm boys and aspiring dentists into artists of the modern dogfight. But as the race reached its climax, some of the pilots began to see how the spotlight warped their sense of duty. They emerged as leaders, beloved by their men as they chose selfless devotion over national accolades. Teeming with action all across the vast Pacific theater, Race of Aces is a fascinating exploration of the boundary between honorable duty, personal glory, and the complex landscape of the human heart. "Brings you into the cockpit of the lethal, fast-paced world of fighter pilots . . . Fascinating." -- Sara Vladic"Extraordinary . . . a must-read." -- US Navy Captain Dan Pedersen"A heart-pounding narrative of the courage, sacrifice, and tragedy of America's elite fighter pilots." -- James M. Scott"Vivid and gripping . . . Confirms Bruning's status as the premier war historian of the air." -- Saul David
