Book excerpt: Beyond Black: Biracial Identity in America is a groundbreaking study of the dynamic meaning of racial identity for multiracial people in post-civil rights America. Kerry Ann Rockquemore and David L. Brunsma document the wide range of racial identities that individuals with one black and one white parent develop, and they provide an incisive sociological explanation of the choices facing those who are multiracial. Stemming from the controversy of the 2000 census and whether an additional "multiracial" category should be added to the survey, this second edition of Beyond Black uses both survey data and interviews of multiracial young adults to explore the contemporary dynamics of racial identity formation. The authors raise social and political questions that are posed by expanding racial categorization on the U.S. census. Book jacket.

Download or read book Multiracial America written by Karen E. Downing and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiracial America addresses a growing interest in interracial people and relationships in America. Over the past decade, there have been numerous books and articles written on interracial issues. Despite the rampant growth in publishing, locating these often-scattered and inaccessible materials remains a challenge. This resource guide provides easy access to the available literature. Topical chapters on the most often researched themes are included, such as core historical literature, books for children and young adults, hot-button issues (passing, identification, appearance, fitting in, and blood quantification), interracial dating and marriage, families, adoption, and issues pertaining to race and queer sexuality. Each chapter includes a brief discussion of the literature on the topic, including historical context and comments on the breadth and depth of the available literature, and followed by annotations of books, popular and scholarly journals, magazines, and newspaper articles, videos/films, and websites. Other useful sections include a chapter on the depiction of interracial relationships in film, teaching an interracial issues course, and how to search for materials given changing terminology and classification issues. Indexes by race and non-print media are included.

Book Racial Identity Development and Psychological Adjustment in Biracial Individuals of Minority Minority Racial Group Descent

Download or read book Racial Identity Development and Psychological Adjustment in Biracial Individuals of Minority Minority Racial Group Descent written by Kizzie Paule Walker and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the theoretical framework of symbolic interactionism and race as a social construct, individuals with biological parents racially distinct from each other have biracial identity options (i.e., Singular, Border, Protean, and Transcendent) (e.g., Rockquemore and Brunsma, 2002). The purpose of the current study was to examine factors that influenced biracial individuals' level of racial/ethnic identity development and the impact on biracial identity and psychological adjustment (i.e., self-esteem and psychological well-being). A total of 199 biracial individuals, who ranged in age from 18 to 55 years, completed an online survey that measured factors such as the rule of hypodescent (i.e., one-drop rule), physical appearance, self-monitoring, and exposure to multicultural experiences. Although the one-drop rule was not a significant predictor of biracial identity options, there were other significant findings within this population. Physical resemblance to two or more racial groups and exposure to multicultural experiences predicted biracial individuals' identification with a Border or Protean identity. Second, this study found that a high level of exposure to multicultural experiences best predicted a high level of ethnic identity development and positive interactions with other racial groups. Lastly, the current study found that the previously mentioned factors also contributed to biracial individuals' psychological adjustment (i.e., self-esteem and psychological well-being). Limitations of the current study and recommendations for future research with this population were also discussed.

Book Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria

Download or read book Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria written by Beverly Daniel Tatum and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic, New York Times-bestselling book on the psychology of racism that shows us how to talk about race in America. Walk into any racially mixed high school and you will see Black, White, and Latino youth clustered in their own groups. Is this self-segregation a problem to address or a coping strategy? How can we get past our reluctance to discuss racial issues? Beverly Daniel Tatum, a renowned authority on the psychology of racism, argues that straight talk about our racial identities is essential if we are serious about communicating across racial and ethnic divides and pursuing antiracism. These topics have only become more urgent as the national conversation about race is increasingly acrimonious. This fully revised edition is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand dynamics of race and racial inequality in America.

Book Biracial Adult Children Raised by White Mothers

Download or read book Biracial Adult Children Raised by White Mothers written by Nicole Sara McKinney and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States (U.S.), the birthrates of Biracial offspring have significantly increased among partnered/married White women and Black men. Racial identification has been historically categorized as “either/or” in the U.S. versus “both/and” which can make it difficult for Biracial individuals to racially identify. Prior research has focused primarily on racial identity development among younger Biracial children and youth and has not examined Biracial identity development across the lifespan. Moreover, few researchers have examined the influence of White mothers on their Biracial offspring’s racial identity development and racial socialization process. In order to fill these gaps, this dyadic qualitative phenomenological dissertation study was designed to retrospectively examine the racial identity and parental socialization experiences of eight Biracially identified male and four female adults and their White mothers. This study followed the stages of transcendental phenomenology as described by Moustakas (1994). First a demographic self-report survey was completed (one for the adult child and one for the White mother) and a skin color scale that only adult Biracial children completed. Then, using a semi-structured interview guide eight Biracial adult children (4 females; 4 males who reported lighter skin and between 18 to 42 years old) and their White mothers were first interviewed separately (30 minutes each) and then interviewed together as a dyad. Interviews, emails, and telephone calls were transcribed verbatim; the 24 transcriptions were analyzed using conventional content analysis (Hsieh & Shannon, 2005) and MAXQDA to identify dominant themes. During the second stage of analysis, findings were examined through the lenses of Biracial identity development (Poston, 1990), parental racial socialization (Hughes and Johnson, 2001), and Rockquemore and Laszloffy’s (2005) continuum of Biracial identity perspective. The following seven dominant themes emerged for the eight adult Biracial individual interviews: 1) Influence of White Mother on Racial Identity, 2) Colorism, 3) Racial Landscape of Biracials, 4) Views on Race, 5) Preference/Favoring Whiteness – Physical Attributes, 6) How Biracial children Deal with racism and, 7) Acceptance. The following four dominant themes emerged for the eight White mother interviews: 1) What Race is Your Child?, 2) Colorism, 3) Cultural Collision and, 4) Parenting a Biracial Child. The following four main themes emerged for the eight family interviews: 1) Responsibility and Recommendations for Socializing Biracials, 2) Closeness of Mother-Child Relationship, 3) Colorism and, 4) How the Interracial Family Functions. Noteworthy, despite reporting a close relationship to their Biracial children, most White mothers did not initiate open discussions about race at home or engage in active parental racial socialization. Biracial adult children described reactive socialization experiences (first racial encounters in the community) and most reported not sharing these experiences with their White mothers. Instead they tended to reach out to teachers, siblings, peers, or processed these racial encounters by themselves. Despite not having open conversations about race at home or active parental racial socialization, there were stories of resiliency, love, and connection that can help to inform other interracial families, the field of family therapy, and training programs. Findings suggest helping White mothers of Biracial children engage in proactive, creative (versus reactive) racial socialization practices could help to buffer children from negative racial encounters out in the community. Providers could inform couples about racial identity development, how to openly initiate and talk to Biracial children about being both Black and White, and how to facilitate positive self-esteem. Training programs could also prepare culturally sensitive therapists to work with Biracial families. Many cross sectional studies with Biracial individuals and their parents have been conducted (Biracial children, adolescents, and adults), however, to date no longitudinal studies have been conducted in real time with Biracial children and their White mothers over the life cycle. Longitudinal prospective studies with White mothers and their young Biracial children could help the field develop a better understanding of parental racial socialization practices, as well as Biracial identity development over time.

Book Shades of Community and Conflict

Download or read book Shades of Community and Conflict written by Josylyn C. Segal and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1998-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of eighteen adults of African-American and Jewish-American heritage explores how biracial subjects of two minority parents negotiates mixed race heritage and identity in a society that maintains a hostile attitude toward interracial unions. Data collection included1) a semi-structured interview to determine subjects' own sense of racial/ethnic identity, 2) a measure of parental closeness, and 3) a series of twelve anecdotal hypothetical situations as a stimulus to revealing subjects' affective, cognitive and behavioral responses in contexts in which the subjects mixed-heritage might be expected to evoke conflict. A qualitative analysis, incorporating socio-cultural, psychodynamic, and historical perspectives, was utilized to investigate 1) racial and cultural stereotyping, 2) a hierarchy of color and racial categorization, 3) racial tolerance, 4) Black and Jewish relations, 5) biracial (Black and Jewish) identity, as mediated by parental and familial closeness. Factors that influenced racial/identity development in the subjects' lives were identified. Five of the six hypotheses were supported: 1) Phenotype is related to interpersonal perception. The biracial adult phenotypically perceived as African-American is more likely to identify as such, whereas the biracial adult phenotypically perceived as White is more likely to identify as either White or "mixed." 2) Closeness to the African-American parent is not necessary for children of mixed-race/Jewish heritage to identify with African-American heritage. 3) Closeness to the Jewish parent is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for children of mixed-race/Jewish heritage to identify with Jewish heritage. 4) For those who are close to their Jewish parent, the degree of closeness affects the degree to which they identify as Jews. 5) The extent to which respondents experience themselves as integral parts of their extended families will increase the extent to which they identify with that half of their cultural heritage. The sixth hypothesis, which stated that to the degree that respondents express negative stereotypes of one part of their heritage they will also minimize their identification with that part of their heritage was not supported due chiefly to the lack of negative stereotyping by most of the respondents.
