Book excerpt: In the U.S. and England racial/ethnic minority student success in STEM graduate disciplines is important to HEI administrators and those policy makers concerned with ensuring viable and healthy economies and communities. U.S. Government studies show that the African and Hispanic Americans earn only about 3% and 2% of all STEM graduate degrees, respectively (comparable numbers for England are not available). The lack of success of such large numbers of minority STEM graduate students poses serious consequences for the student, institution, and broader society in the form of lack of innovation and stalled competitive global endeavors. For this dissertation I employed qualitative research methods (and quantitative baseline data) to design and conduct comparative phenomenological case study on the factors that influence minority success in graduate STEM. National clearinghouse data in both countries and insights from interview with students, faculty, and administrators at four comprehensive public research institutions (two per country) were used to develop the themes of social and cultural capital (focusing on socioeconomic status and parental education/family support); educational preparation; and educational experiences/engagement (focusing on institutional/faculty support and mentoring) to make comparisons that could be useful to educators in both countries in the continuing efforts to increase success through widening participation initiatives. A total of eighty administrators, faculty, and minority students were interviewed in the United State and England in order to discover and examine the influences, institutional environments, policies, programs, and practices that are perceived to contribute to the success of minorities in STEM. Findings indicate that a number of comparisons exist between the samples including the importance of parental and family support as a major influence in the development of the students social/cultural capital, which directly influences their interest and passion for these disciplines (preparation), and which in-turn influences the perceptions of their educational experiences.

Book excerpt: As the U.S. focuses on positioning itself to retain and advance its status as a world leader in technology and scientific innovation, a recognition that community colleges are a critical site for intervention has become apparent. Community colleges serve the lion’s share of the nation’s postsecondary students. In fact, 40% of all undergraduate students are enrolled in community colleges, these students account for nearly 30% of all STEM undergraduate majors in postsecondary institutions. These students serve as a core element of the STEM pipeline into four-year colleges and universities via the community college transfer function. Moreover, community colleges are the primary postsecondary access point for non-traditional students, including students of color, first-generation, low-income, and adult students. This is a particularly salient point given that these populations are sordidly underrepresented among STEM graduates and in the STEM workforce. Increasing success among these populations can contribute significantly to advancing the nation’s interests in STEM. As such, the community college is situated as an important site for innovative practices that have strong implications for bolstering the nation’s production and sustenance of a STEM labor force. In recognition of this role, the National Science Foundation and private funding agencies have invested millions of dollars into research and programs designed to bolster the STEM pipeline. From this funding and other independently sponsored inquiry, promising programs, initiatives, and research recommendations have been identified. These efforts hold great promise for change, with the potential to transform the education and outcome of STEM students at all levels. This important book discusses many of these promising programs, initiatives, and research-based recommendations that can impact the success of STEM students in the community college. This compilation is timely, on the national landscape, as the federal government has placed increasing importance on improving STEM degree production as a strategy for America’s future stability in an increasingly competitive global marketplace. Book excerpt: Achievement in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is a marker of racial inequality. Despite making up 13 percent of the U.S. populace, Black representation in STEM education and the STEM workforce is far from equitable. A reversal of this trend, however, exists at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), where HBCU graduates represent nearly 18 percent of STEM baccalaureate degrees awarded to Black students. Through a multi-site case study of STEM education at four HBCUs, I interviewed students, faculty and administrators involved in services and programs (i.e. undergraduate research, mentoring) specific to supporting students in the gateway courses. Validation Theory and Science Identity Theory were used to inform the overall design--collection and analysis of data--of the study. I found that these services make a meaningful difference in the achievement of students in STEM by providing them with sound relationships and effective study skills, embedded within a culture of family, that help them overcome the challenges associated with the gateway courses. This difference can also be attributed to the multiple roles that faculty plays outside the classroom to address the challenges that externally bear on their students' achievement. By understanding how these four HBCUs have helped their students overcome this critical stage in the STEM educational pipeline, findings help identify salient practices and strategies that encourage minority student learning and persistence that could be informative to other minority serving institutions and majority institutions struggling to support these student populations. Lastly, this study also demonstrates the ongoing importance of HBCUs in improving minority access to opportunities in the STEM workforce.
