Book excerpt: Anna Pavlova's revolutionary debut in 1910 at the Metropolitan Opera House captivated the nation and introduced Americans to the charms of modern ballet. Willa Cather was among the first intellectuals to recognize that dance had suddenly been elevated into a new art form, and she quickly trained herself to become one of the leading balletomanes of her era. Willa Cather and the Dance: "A Most Satisfying Elegance" traces the writer's dance education, starting with the ten-page explication she wrote in 1913 for McClure's magazine called "Training for the Ballet." Cather's interest was sustained through her entire canon as she utilized characters, scenes, and images from almost all of the important dance productions that played in New York.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zack Neiway was a private man who loved naval power, his family, and the quiet of the open water. His steely gaze could hold you in thrall or dismiss you into insignificance. He especially loved his daughters—much more than he should have. Zack’s Daughters is the story of a “perfect” family’s tragedies and how those tragedies are finally resolved through religion, storytelling, and music. The surface is what you see; the reality is something else. "An utterly disturbing, and often absorbing, family saga with many moving pieces" -- Kirkus Discovery Review "Mesmerizing. Kreidler seduces with poetic words to hurl us into the dark corners where abuse dwells." -- Eileen Spratt Ehlers

Book A Cultural History of the Emotions in the Medieval Age

Download or read book A Cultural History of the Emotions in the Medieval Age written by Juanita Ruys and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our period opens at the end of the Roman Empire when intellectual currents are indebted to the Greek philosophical inheritance of Plato and Aristotle, as well as to a Romanized Stoicism. Into this mix entered the new, and from 313CE imperially sanctioned, religion of Christianity. In art, literature, music, and drama, we find an increasing emphasis on the arousal of individual emotions and their acceptance as a means towards devotion. In religion, we see a move from the ascetic regulation of emotions to the affective piety of the later medieval period that valued the believer's identification with the Passion of Christ and the sorrow of Mary. In science and medicine, the nature and causes of emotions, their role in constituting the human person, and their impact on the same became a subject of academic inquiry. Emotions also played an increasingly important public role, evidenced in populace-wide events such as conversion and the strategies of rulership. Between 350 and 1300, emotions were transformed from something to be transcended into a location for meditation upon what it means to be human.

Book Moscow Performances II

Book excerpt: This is a collection of John Freedman's reviews and articles, most originally written for the Moscow Times, in which he focuses his expert critical eye on the directors, writers and actors who held centre stage during the 1996-97 theatre season in Moscow. The book looks at the debut of promising new artists and directors at the Moscow Art Theatre celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and offers a wealth of insight into the latest developments in Russian theatre. Freedman illuminates all of the season's noteworthy trends and events in clear, informed and unapologetically opinionated reports. More than just an overview of the stars and highlights, Moscow Performances II observes at close range the playhouses and the people who make up the ever-changing face of contemporary Russian theatre today. This volume is generously illustrated with photographs of featured productions and will be a useful reference for students, professors, writers, directors and actors in the fields of Russian studies, theatre studies, theatre history and contemporary culture.
