Book U S Commission on Civil Rights

Download or read book U S Commission on Civil Rights written by United States. General Accounting Office and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to a congressional request, GAO: (1) provided information on the Commission on Civil Rights' publications; and (2) compared the published output of the present Commission to that of the former Commission. GAO found that: (1) the Commission's yearly publications output declined from a yearly average of 51 to 13; (2) of the 357 publications it reviewed, the present Commission issued only 37; and (3) the present Commission issued only 1 statutory report to Congress, compared to 27 issued by the former Commission. GAO also found that: (1) the publications the Commission issued from 1978 through 1986 were related to the Commission's general responsibilities; (2) although some of the publications addressed allegations concerning voting rights or voting fraud, the Commission did not initiate them in response to written allegations made under oath, as required by statute; and (3) the largest decline in publications was in state advisory committee reports. GAO also noted a general decline in the Commission's staff and budget.

Book The Battle Over Bilingual Ballots

Download or read book The Battle Over Bilingual Ballots written by James Thomas Tucker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, few federal requirements have been as controversial as the mandate for what critics call 'bilingual ballots'. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 included a permanent requirement for language assistance for Puerto Rican voters educated in Spanish and ten years later Congress banned English-only elections in certain covered jurisdictions, expanding the support to include Alaska Natives, American Indians, Asian-language voters and Spanish-language voters. Some commentators have condemned the language assistance provisions, underlying many of their attacks with anti-immigrant rhetoric. Although the provisions have been in effect for over three decades, until now no comprehensive study of them has been published. This book describes the evolution of the provisions, examining the evidence of educational and voting discrimination against language minorities covered by the Act. Additional chapters discuss the debate over the 2006 amendments to the Voting Rights Act, analysis of objections raised by opponents of bilingual ballots and some of the most controversial components of these requirements, including their constitutionality, cost and effectiveness. Featuring revealing case studies as well as analysis of key data, this volume makes a persuasive and much-needed case for bilingual ballots, presenting a thorough investigation of this significant and understudied area of election law and American political life.

Book The Invention of Native American Literature

Download or read book The Invention of Native American Literature written by Robert Dale Parker and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an original, widely researched, and accessibly written book, Robert Dale Parker helps redefine the study of Native American literature by focusing on issues of gender and literary form. Among the writers Parker highlights are Thomas King, John Joseph Mathews, D'Arcy McNickle, Leslie Marmon Silko, and Ray A. Young Bear, some of whom have previously received little scholarly attention.Parker proposes a new history of Native American literature by reinterpreting its concerns with poetry, orality, and Indian notions of authority. He also addresses representations of Indian masculinity, uncovering Native literature's recurring fascination with restless young men who have nothing to do, or who suspect or feel pressured to believe that they have nothing to do. The Invention of Native American Literature reads Native writing through a wide variety of shifting historical contexts. In its commitment to historicizing Native writing and identity, Parker's work parallels developments in scholarship on other minority literatures and is sure to provoke controversy.

Book Performance Theories in Education

Download or read book Performance Theories in Education written by Bryant Keith Alexander and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-12-13 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance Theories in Education: Power, Pedagogy, and the Politics of Identity breaks new ground by presenting a range of approaches to understanding the role, function, impact, and presence of performance in education. It is a definitive contribution to a beginning dialogue on how performance, as a theoretical and pragmatic lens, can be used to view the processes, procedures, and politics of education. The conceptual framework of the volume is the editors' argument that performance and performativity help to locate and describe repetitive actions plotted within grids of power relationships and social norms that comprise the context of education and schooling. The book brings together performance studies and education researchers, teachers, and scholars to investigate such topics as: *the relationship between performance and performativity in pedagogical practice; *the nature and impact of performing identities in varying contexts; *cultural and community configurations that fall under the umbrella of teaching, education, and schooling; and *the hot button issues of educational policies and reform as performances. With the aim of developing a clearer understanding of the effect, affect, and role of performance in education, the volume provides a crucial starting point for discourse among theorists and teacher practitioners who are interested in understanding and acknowledging the politics of performance and the practices of performative social identities that always and already intervene in the educational endeavor.
