Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new addition to Springer’s series on Key Thinkers in World Education tracks the intellectual and philosophical journey of a trail-blazing innovator whose ideas have fired the imaginations of progressive educationalists for almost a century. The volume’s in-depth analysis of the educational philosophy of Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore offers an unrivalled focus on his highly influential views. Tagore—poet, internationalist, humanist, and the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for literature—lived on the cusp of change between two momentous centuries in world civilization and foresaw the dissolution of colonialism and the globalization of culture. His ideas on education placed the creative individual at the centre of the quest for knowledge. Eschewing the artificial distinctions between elementary and higher learning, he advocated the importance of sowing the seed of humanism as early as possible, and fostering the individual’s enjoyment of education as well as their courage to challenge conventions. In doing so, he anticipated the modern concern with critical thinking at the same time as he was encouraging independence of thought and action as a counter to colonial oppression and condescension. Concise yet thorough, this volume on one of the most original thinkers of the last century covers every aspect of Tagore’s highly original educational philosophy.

Book The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore

Download or read book The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore written by Kalyan Sen Gupta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nobel Prize winner, Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) - 'the Indian Goethe', as Albert Schweitzer called him - was not only the foremost poet and playwright of modern India, but one of its most profound and influential thinkers. Kalyan Sen Gupta's book is the first comprehensive introduction to Tagore's philosophical, socio-political and religious thinking. Drawing on Rabindranath's poetry as well as his essays, and against the background theme of his deep sensitivity to the holistic character of human life and the natural world, Sen Gupta explores the wide range of Tagore's thought. His idea of spirituality, his reflections on the significance of death, his educational innovations and his relationship to his great contemporary, Gandhi, are among the topics that Sen Gupta discusses - as are Tagore's views on marriage, his distinctive understanding of Hinduism, and his prescient concerns for the natural environment. The author does not disguise the tensions to be found in Tagore's writings, but endorses the great poet's own conviction that these are tensions resolvable at the level of a creative life, if not at that of abstract thought.

Book excerpt: This book explores the educational thought and practice of Asia’s first Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, who spent forty years of his life developing an alternative educational learning centre in Santiniketan, India. For Tagore, the ideal of education was no less than to bring the individual in touch with the whole of life. It should include the emotional, intellectual, aesthetic, socio-political, spiritual and economic, emphasizing at each step how training and knowledge have an organic connection with the environment. Beginning as a primary school for boys, Santiniketan evolved to include Visva-Bharati, a higher educational learning centre that encompassed all-India, pan-Asian, global dimensions, as well as Sriniketan, the Centre for Rural Reconstruction, which concentrated on mass education and agrarian uplift. This book will explore the models such as the ancient forest schools and medieval Buddhist monastic universities of India that inspired the development of Tagore’s open-ended educational experiment with its emphasis upon nature and the arts. As well, it examines how Tagore’s particular sensitivity to the problems of race, language, cultural differences, economic disparity, and political and gender imbalance speak to concerns that are with us over a century later.

Book excerpt: Rabindranath Tagore was not only a great poet and novelist but also a great artist. He started painting in his late sixties and continued painting till he died. He left behind more than 2500 paintings and drawings, all done between 1928-41. Tagore's paintings are bereft of all spiritual solace; they portray silence and loneliness. They are also very strange--the viewer is not sure how to view his paintings. Many of the paintings in this volume can be placed beside the works of major twentieth century artists.

Book Rabindranath Tagore s Aesthetics

Download or read book Rabindranath Tagore s Aesthetics written by Kaushal Kishore Sharma and published by Abhinav Publications. This book was released on 1988 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most versatile of modern creative artists, Indian or Western, not excepting T.S. Eliot and D.H. Lawrence, Tagore doubtless offers us a fairly profound and elaborate aesthetic theory, though, of course, he does not write about art and literature with the deliberate intention of a writer of aesthetics. From a systematic, close study of his pronouncements and cogitations on art and literature, scattered in his variegated writings, emerges an aesthetic philosophy, which is absolutely invaluable to apprehend and appreciate his creative mind as well as the Indian and Western arts and literatures. Much of the finest of the Indian and Western aesthetics has been retouched and modernised by him, and to this he has contributed considerably by dint of his original mind. Hence the need and justfication for a book such as this. There is almost a plethora of critical studies on the various aspects of Rabindranath Tagore’s mind and art. But, curiously enough, only a little attempt has hitherto been made to assimilate and assess his theory-statements on art in detail. This paucity of work further necessitates a thorough exploration of this subject. The present book is an attempt to meet this need. A comprehensive study of Tagore’s aesthetics, the book, it is hoped, will surely help the reader to understand Tagore, art and literature correctly.

Download or read book The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore written by Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore (1918) is an academic study by Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Published at the beginning of his career as one of India’s leading professors of comparative religion, the work is a masterful investigation of the teachings of poet-philosopher Rabindranath Tagore. In 1913, Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first lyricist and non-European to be awarded the distinction. Over the next several decades, Tagore wrote his influential novel The Home and the World (1916), toured dozens of countries, and advocated on behalf of Dalits and other oppressed peoples. “Rabindranath’s teaching, with its vital faith in the redeeming power of the spiritual forces and their up-building energy, has a particular value at the present moment, when the civilized world is passing through the crucible of a ghastly war which, whether or not it purges the nations of their pride and hate, lust for gold and greed of land, at least proclaims, in no uncertain tones, the utter bankruptcy of materialism.” In this masterwork of twentieth century criticism, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan explores the philosophical teachings of Rabindranath Tagore, a leading artist and intellectual of modern India. Divided into five chapters, the book explores the interrelation of poetry and philosophy in Tagore’s work, his influence on Indian culture, and the meaning of his contribution to the nations of the world. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore is a classic of Indian literature reimagined for modern readers.

CHAPTER IV THE MESSAGE OF RABINDRANATH TAGORE TO INDIA Here the singer for his art Not all in vain may plead, The song that moves a nation's heart Is in itself a deed. Tennyson. The old Arab tribes would gather in liveliest gaudeamus, and sing, and kindle bonfires, and wreathe crowns of honour, and solemnly thank the gods that in their tribe, too, a poet had shown himself. As, indeed, they well might; for what usefuller, I say not nobler and heavenlier thing, could the gods, doing their very kindest, send to any tribe or nation, in any time or circumstance.--Carlyle. I There are men rare in any age, but unique in our age, to whom it is given to shape the mind of their country to an extent that cannot be rigntly estimated in their own lifetime. Rabindranath Tagore is such a man, and the debt which modern India owes to him, we cannot pretend to measure. His teaching is penetrating the most out-of-the way and distant corners of India; the amount of moral regeneration and social uplift which his work will accomplish, it is quite impossible to say now. To the people of India, he is a prophet with a message. In the true sense of the word he is a national poet. India fills his heart as nothing else does. He sees what India wants, and tells us what exactly it is. He sees the inward agonising of the Indian soul, understands the passions and doubts surging in her mind, wishes to deliver her from the travail through which she is passing, and give her peace of soul. He pours forth in his supreme song the dreams and aspirations which are moving the mind of India. The joys and sorrows, the hopes and fears, the doubts and beliefs of the Indian life are captured in his books. Adapting Johnson, we might say that the work of Rabindranath abounds in...
