As soon as she arrives in Rowe, piloting her small airplane, she can see the problem: thugs "on the lam" from other crimes have taken over the small town and are terrorizing its citizens. Some have already moved away. Drunken mischief on the town common soon turns to violence, theft, rape and murder. Lisa makes friends with the town doctor and the two try to curb the growing threat, but inevitably the protagonists enter a chilling scenario where mayhem conquers and normalcy falters. Book Rabbles Riots and Ruins

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mike Aquilina
  • Publisher : Ignatius Press
  • Release : 2024-06-17
  • ISBN : 1642292958
  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book Rabbles Riots and Ruins written by Mike Aquilina and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2024-06-17 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerusalem, Rome, Antioch, Alexandria, Ephesus, Carthage, Edessa . . . These were some of the ancient cities that once raged against the Gospel and persecuted the Church but later came to admirable faith. Each city had its own unique commerce, culture, and institutions. Each city was different from all the others, and each became more perfectly itself through the influence of Jesus Christ. In the pages of this book, you'll climb the hills of these cities, sail into their harbors, look up in awe at their titanic public works, walk their streets, push your way through their bustling markets. And you'll see how all those things shaped the expression, practice, and history of the Christianity we know today. This is your imaginative entry into the world of the Church Fathers, the saints, and sages who converted the world to Christ. During their era—and in their hostile cities—the Church grew at a steady rate of 40 percent per decade, and practices such as abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia went from commonplace to unthinkable. The Fathers have something important to teach the modern Church about evangelization. Among Mike Aquilina's many works about the Church Fathers, this is his most complete and compelling overview of the Fathers' amazing achievements.

Book The Tragedie of Macbeth

Download or read book The Tragedie of Macbeth written by William Shakespeare and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Shakespeare's works are most accessible when viewed as working theatrical playscripts, "The Tragedie of Macbeth: A Frankly Annotated First Folio Edition" preserves the spelling, capitalization, and punctuation of the First Folio of 1623 while at the same time providing the most comprehensive, revelatory, and plainspoken annotation to date. Based on the principle that Shakespeare's plays were written as popular (and not entirely decent) entertainments aimed at an adult (and not overly refined) audience, this no-nonsense and sexually candid text offers performers, scholars, and anyone with an interest in Shakespeare a unique resource to gain valuable insights into the play, the world in which Shakespeare wrote, and the playhouse in which his plays were produced.

Pip Norris, the farrier, Wilda Murtagh, the cousin of the perfidious mayor from Middleburg, Gore Dewey, the blacksmith, and Hans Silver, a local farmer, have thrown their hats into the ring, too. And if Earl Dollman's polling is to be believed, it's going to be a tight race. But when every candidate except Hendry receives a letter threatening to expose their "secret," Bev's once again called to investigate. Hendry swears it wasn't her, and though she'd do anything to win, she wouldn't stoop that low. But as Bev starts investigating, she realizes each candidate has far more secrets than can fill a polling booth, and finding the blackmailer is going to take all her wits. Campaigns and Curses is the eighth book in the Weary Dragon Inn series.

Book In the Long Run We Are All Dead

Download or read book In the Long Run We Are All Dead written by Geoff Mann and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking debunking of moderate attempts to resolve financial crises In the ruins of the 2007–2008 financial crisis, self-proclaimed progressives the world over clamored to resurrect the economic theory of John Maynard Keynes. The crisis seemed to expose the disaster of small-state, free-market liberalization and deregulation. Keynesian political economy, in contrast, could put the state back at the heart of the economy and arm it with the knowledge needed to rescue us. But what it was supposed to rescue us from was not so clear. Was it the end of capitalism or the end of the world? For Keynesianism, the answer is both. Keynesians are not and never have been out to save capitalism, but rather to save civilization from itself. It is political economy, they promise, for the world in which we actually live: a world in which prices are “sticky,” information is “asymmetrical,” and uncertainty inescapable. In this world, things will definitely not take care of themselves in the long run. Poverty is ineradicable, markets fail, and revolutions lead to tyranny. Keynesianism is thus modern liberalism’s most persuasive internal critique, meeting two centuries of crisis with a proposal for capital without capitalism and revolution without revolutionaries. If our current crises have renewed Keynesianism for so many, it is less because the present is worth saving, than because the future seems out of control. In that situation, Keynesianism is a perfect fit: a faith for the faithless.
