Book The Imposteress Rabbit Breeder

Download or read book The Imposteress Rabbit Breeder written by Karen Harvey and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1726, newspapers began reporting a remarkable event. In the town of Godalming in Surrey, a woman called Mary Toft had started to give birth to rabbits. Several leading doctors - some sent directly by King George I - travelled to examine the woman and she was moved to London to be closer to them. By December, she had been accused of fraud and taken into custody. Mary Toft's unusual deliveries caused a media sensation. Her rabbit births were a test case for doctors trying to further their knowledge about the processes of reproduction and pregnancy. The rabbit births prompted not just public curiosity and scientific investigation, but also a vicious backlash. Based on extensive new archival research, this book is the first in-depth re-telling of this extraordinary story. Karen Harvey situates the rabbit-births within the troubled community of Godalming and the women who remained close to Mary Toft as the case unfolded, exploring the motivations of the medics who examined her, considering why the case attracted the attention of the King and powerful men in government, and following the case through the criminal justice system. The case of Mary Toft exposes huge social and cultural changes in English history. Against the backdrop of an incendiary political culture, it was a time when traditional social hierarchies were shaken, relationships between men and women were redrawn, print culture acquired a new vibrancy and irreverence, and knowledge of the body was remade. But Mary Toft's story is not just a story about the past. In reconstructing Mary's physical, social and mental world, The Imposteress Rabbit Breeder allows us to reflect critically on our own ideas about pregnancy, reproduction, and the body through the lens of the past.

Book The Shooting of Rabbit Wells

Download or read book The Shooting of Rabbit Wells written by William Loizeaux and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2015-09-22 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What put a white cop and a black youth on a tragic collision course? This moving account is more timely than ever. On a frigid winter’s night in 1973, William “Rabbit” Wells, a young man of mixed race, was shot and killed by a white policeman named William Sorgie outside a bar in Bernardsville, New Jersey. The shooting, later ruled an accident, stunned local residents and the nation. For thirty years, author William Loizeaux, who went to high school with Rabbit, hasn’t been able to forget what happened. With clear-eyed compassion and unsparing honesty, The Shooting of Rabbit Wells re-creates the lives of both victim and killer, and the forces that brought them together. At the story’s center is Rabbit Wells himself. Part African-American, part Cherokee, part white, Rabbit never knew his father and was neglected by his mother. Here is a memoir, a biography, and the story of a writer’s search for the scattered remains of a catastrophe. A stirring and powerful document, it is also a work of terrible beauty: by giving us the life of Rabbit Wells, Loizeaux makes us understand—and feel—how unacceptable and irreparable the loss was, and how deeply the bullet that killed him is lodged in the American identity.

Book Church Science and a Rabbit

Download or read book Church Science and a Rabbit written by Charles Sigman Osl and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last fifteen years of my ministry I have seen both the positives and negatives of technology. For the most part technology has made lives better, but when technology drives humanity and when science defines the human condition, problems arise. Science has the potential for destroying myth. Myth is the thread that holds the human tapestry or narrative together. One role the Church must take on is to keep science and technology in their proper place by saying, "No," when the two overstep their limitations. Currently, there are no checks and balances placed upon science. Science is accountable to no one but itself. Humans are imperfect, and thus, science is imperfect. In this way, the Church brings meaning and purpose to religion, while still affirming science's role of making people's physical lives better. Both science and religion need a level of utilitarian mission, purpose, and vision. The Church and science must be in a friendly, adversarial relationship. Conflict is good and healthy because from out of conflict comes great creativity. Adversity spawns growth. When science and religion are in healthy, amiable conflict, creativity emerges-just as the butterfly struggles to emerge from the cocoon.
