Download or read book Rescued from the Reich written by Bryan Mark Rigg and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Hitler invaded Warsaw in the fall of 1939, hundreds of thousands of civilians—many of them Jewish—were trapped in the besieged city. The Rebbe Joseph Schneersohn, the leader of the ultra-orthodox Lubavitcher Jews, was among them. Followers throughout the world were filled with anguish, unable to confirm whether he was alive or dead. Working with officials in the United States government, a group of American Jews initiated what would ultimately become one of the strangest—and most miraculous—rescues of World War II. The escape of Rebbe Schneersohn from Warsaw has been the subject of speculation for decades. Historian Bryan Mark Rigg has now uncovered the true story of the rescue, which was propelled by a secret collaboration between American officials and leaders of German military intelligence. Amid the fog of war, a small group of dedicated German soldiers located the Rebbe and protected him from suspicious Nazis as they fled the city together. During the course of the mission, the Rebbe learned the shocking truth about the leader of the rescue operation, the decorated Wehrmacht soldier Ernst Bloch: he was himself half-Jewish, and a victim of the rising tide of German antisemitism. A harrowing story about identity and moral responsibility, Rescued from the Reich is also a riveting narrative history of one of the most extraordinary rescue missions of World War II.
Download or read book Targum Americana The Bible Understood Shemot Exodus written by Irwin Tyler and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that there are so many translations and commentaries of the Bible tells us that each is somehow lacking something. Most translators did not grow up with Biblical Hebrew as a living language, the Torah was meant to be chanted, and reading continuity is interrupted by footnotes and margin notes. This work overcomes these problems for English speakers in the way the 2,000 year old Targum did for that day's Aramaic speakers.
Download or read book Targum Americana The Bible Understood Leviticus VaYikra written by Irwin Tyler and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DonÕt we have more than enough translations of the Holy Bible? Unfortunately, most translations have three flaws: 1.Translators who did not grow up with Biblical Hebrew, the Holy Language, as a living language find it difficult to appreciate its nuances and poetry. This often results in translation errors, lost subtleties in meaning, and apparently conflicting ideas among different translations. 2.By using footnotes and margin comments, modern translators seek to overcome these difficulties, but this makes the reading labored since reading is constantly interrupted. 3.The Torah was meant to be chanted, with the tunes adding meaning and emphasis to the listenerÕs understanding. Chants are hard to translate into words. Aramaic Targum ÒtranslationsÓ of 2000+ years ago were successful in overcoming these limitations. This Targum Americana combines traditional translation and commentary with some sense of the beauty in English of the original Holy Tongue.
