Download or read book Armenian Philology in the Modern Era written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philology is one of the most investigated fields of Armenian studies. At the end of the twentieth century, it was important to provide an overview of the main achievements and on the methodological approaches implemented in this field till now. This is the aim of the present publication. Part I focuses on the manuscripts, the inscriptions, and the printings. Its second section is devoted to the textual criticisms and the third section explores the interface between linguistics and philology. Case studies form the core of Part II. One chapter offers an overview on the 17th-19th centuries, and two articles are devoted to the conditions of the circulation of the literary production in the 20th century, both in Western and Eastern Armenian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East-West struggle for supremacy from 1945 to 1989 shaped the lives of hundreds of millions and brought the world to the brink of disaster on several occasions. More than two decades on, the debate over its causes and dynamics is far from over. Drawing on the latest archival evidence and scholarly research, prize-winning historian John Lamberton Harper provides a concise, briskly-written assessment of the Cold War. Why did it start, and eventually envelope nearly every corner of the planet? Why did it stay "cold," at least in its original, European theatre? Why did it end, and who should take the credit? Harper illuminates the deep-seated behavioural patterns within both the Soviet Union and the United States: the search for security through expansion and military might, the belief in a "messianic" mission to uplift humanity, but also a readiness to live and let live based on membership in a common state system and a shared interest in survival. He stresses ways in which internal competitions for political power tilted both the U.S. and Soviet systems towards bellicosity and obsessive preparation for a hot war that no one seriously intended to begin. It is a story of delusions of omnipotence and rash behavior, punctuated by moments of redeeming statesmanship and self-restraint. Harper concludes that, rather than triumphalism, a clear look back at the Cold War's close calls with catastrophe and enormous cost in lives and treasure ought to evoke a sense of regret and humility, as well as relief.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A poignant and contentious novel by a rising star of New Zealand literature. Box Saxton just wants to bury his teenage stepson’s body in the churchyard near the farm where Box grew up. What happens, though, when the boy’s biological father, a Māori leader, unexpectedly turns up in the days before the funeral and forcibly takes the boy’s body? According to Māori custom the boy must be buried in the tribe’s ancestral cemetery at the small coastal town of Kaipuna. According to the law there is very little Box can do. With no plan and little hope, Box gets in his old truck and drives north, desperate and heartbroken. Settlers' Creek explores the claims of both indigenous people and more recent settlers to have a spiritual link to the land. 'Brave, bold and unflinching, Carl Nixon's Settler's Creek is one of the best novels to come out of New Zealand. It's not only a gripping, brutal, thriller but also a dissection of a country and its culture. It's the kind of book that gets you run out of town.' - Witi Ihimaera
