Book Long term Tamoxifen Treatment for Breast Cancer

Download or read book Long term Tamoxifen Treatment for Breast Cancer written by Virgil Craig Jordan and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past twenty years tamoxifen has become the most widely prescribed and most successful drug used in the treatment of breast cancer. In this volume, editor V. Craig Jordan provides articles that trace the development, pharmacology, and clinical research surrounding this drug which, by the year 2000, could be used to treat as many as one million women annually. Drawing from research conducted by specialists in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Italy, the series of articles describes the clinical testing of tamoxifen, highlighting the benefits. Studies show that tamoxifen lowers cholesterol and can potentially protect women against osteoporosis and fatal coronary heart disease. Equally important is a discussion of side effects and possible drug interactions and how these issues relate to patient concerns. An investigation of the development of a new class of drugs for use after tamoxifen fails provides valuable insight into future treatments, as the contributers consider possible resistance to tamoxifen. This volume provides invaluable information for physicians and surgeons who care for patients with breast cancer and for women interested in exploring this therapeutic dimension.

Book Dreams of Lovers and Lies of Poets

Download or read book Dreams of Lovers and Lies of Poets written by Sylvia Huot and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman de la Rose explicitly offers an 'art of love', while also repeatedly asserting that the experience of love is impossible to put into words. An examination of the intertextual density of the Rose , with its citations and adaptations of a range of Latin authors, shows that the discourse of bodily desire, pleasure, and trauma emerges indirectly from the juxtaposition and conflation of sources. Huot's new book focuses on Guillaume de Lorris's use of the Ovidian corpus, and on Jean de Meun's dazzling orchestration of allusions to a wider range of Latin writers: principally Ovid, Boethius, and Virgil, but also including John of Salisbury and Alain de Lille. In both parts of the Rose , poetic allegory is a language that can express the unspeakable and the ineffable.

Book The Vedantic Relationality of Rabindranath Tagore

Download or read book The Vedantic Relationality of Rabindranath Tagore written by Ankur Barua and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a thematic study of the poet-thinker Rabindranath Tagore’s conceptual project of harmonizing the one and its many. Tagore’s writings, in Bengali and in English, on religious and social themes are held together by the leitmotif of a “harmony” which operates across several existential, religious, and social polarities – the finite and the infinite, the temporal and the eternal, and the individual and the universal. Tagore creatively appropriated materials from diverse sources such as the classical Hindu Vedāntic systems, the folk piety of Bengal, and others, to configure a dialectic which shapes his writings on both religious and social themes. On the one hand, each individual is irreducibly distinct from everyone else, and, on the other hand, each individual gains their spiritual depth precisely by being placed within the dynamic matrices of an interrelated whole. Thus, we find Tagore rejecting certain monastic forms of Hindu world-renunciation and also certain ecstatic dimensions of devotional worship – the former because they efface individuality and the latter because they can generate self-absorbed styles of living. Again, Tagore is as sharply opposed to Bengali imitativeness of English modes of being in the world as he is to Bengali forms of insularity – the former because it dilutes the concrete richness of indigenous lifeforms and the latter because it confines individuals to parochial enclosures. Tagore’s life-long endeavor was to configure a “third way” by rejecting both the blank homogeneity of an undifferentiated one and the particularistic insularities of a multitude without a deeper center of coherence.
