En effet, les femmes vivant en milieu rural vivent des enjeux particuliers quant à la violence conjugale. Notamment au Nouveau-Brunswick, 70% des décès liés aux homicides conjugaux se situent en régions rurales et ce sont majoritairement des femmes, d'où l'importance de se pencher sur cette problématique (Gill, 2019). Qui plus est, les adultes ne sont pas les seuls à subir les effets de cette violence : les enfants vivant dans une maison où il y a une dynamique de violence conjugale ressentent des répercussions à court et long terme (Gouvernement du Québec, 2020). On sait désormais que le fait d'être exposé de violence conjugale durant l'enfance a des conséquences sur le plan physique, psychologique, social et scolare des enfants exposés (Fortin 2009). De plus, certains ressentent les répercussions de l'exposition dans leur vie adulte particulièrement dans leurs relations amoureuses (Gouvernement du Québec, 2020). Cette recherche vise à comprendre de quelles manières l'exposition à la violence conjugale vécue dans l'enfance affecte les relations amoureuses à l'âge adulte chez les femmes hétérosexuelles francophones en milieu rural. Cette question a été explorée à la lumière de la théorie de l'apprentissage social de Bandura (1997) et de la théorie féministe. Six femmes ayant été exposées à la violence conjugale durant l'enfance et ayant été dans une relation amoureuse violente ou non violente à l`âge adulte ont participé à un entretien semi-dirigé. Les résultats révèlent que l'exposition à la violence conjugale peut entrainer des conséquences à long terme dans la vie de certaines femmes. La coprésence de l'exposition à la violence conjugale avec d'autres formes de violence et les lacunes dans les services de soutien aux femmes victimes de violence conjugale et aux enfants exposés sont également soulignées. En contexte rural, la proximité des habitants nuit à la confidentialité des services d'aide aux victimes. En contrepartie, l'aide du réseau informel semblait accessible plus rapidement pour les participantes lorsque celles-ci sont en période de crise. Ce mémoire permet de comprendre les perceptions des femmes quant aux répercussions de l'exposition à la violence conjugale dans leur relations amoureuses à l'âge adulte, tout en tenant compte des particularités du milieu rural néo-brunswickois."--Sommaire.

Book excerpt: La présente étude évalue les relations entre divers types de trauma violents vécus en bas âge et l'ajustement conjugal à l'âge adulte, à l'aide d'un modèle théorique intégrateur des conduites d'attachement (anxiété abandonnique et évitement de l'intimité) et de la détresse psychologique. L'objectif est de comparer les résultats observés chez les hommes et les femmes. Quatre types de traumas subis durant l'enfance sont retenus : violence physique, violence psychologique, témoin de violence physique et témoin de violence psychologique. Six cent trente-deux hommes et femmes, qui forment un échantillon représentatif des couples québécois, ont complété des mesures de trauma subis en enfance, d'attachement, de détresse psychologique et d'ajustement dyadique. Des analyses d'équations structurales indiquent que les liens significatifs à l'intérieur du modèle varient en fonction du type de trauma subi en enfance et du genre de la victime. D'une part, la violence physique ainsi que la violence psychologique vécue en enfance sont liées indirectement à l'ajustement conjugal via la détresse psychologique pour l'homme uniquement. D'autre part, être témoin de violence physique durant l'enfance influence indirectement l'ajustement conjugal via l'attachement (anxiété abandonnique) pour les femmes uniquement. Aucun lien n'est observé entre le fait d'être témoin de violence psychologique entre les parents et les variables envisagées à l'âge adulte.

Traumatology (the study of trauma, its effects, and methods to modify effects) is exploding in terms of published works and expanding in terms of scope. Originally a narrow specialty within emergency medicine, the field now extends to trauma psychology, military psychiatry and behavioral health, post-traumatic stress and stress disorders, trauma social work, disaster mental health, and, most recently, the subfield of history and trauma, with sociohistorical examination of long-term effects and meanings of major traumas experienced by whole communities and nations, both natural (Pompeii, Hurricane Katrina) and man-made (the Holocaust, 9/11). One reason for this expansion involves important scientific breakthroughs in detecting the neurobiology of trauma that is connecting biology with human behavior, which in turn, is applicable to all fields involving human thought and response, including but not limited to psychiatry, medicine and the health sciences, the social and behavioral sciences, the humanities, and law. Researchers within these fields and more can contribute to a universal understanding of immediate and long-term consequences–both good and bad–of trauma, both for individuals and for broader communities and institutions. Trauma encyclopedias published to date all center around psychological trauma and its emotional effects on the individual as a disabling or mental disorder requiring mental health services. This element is vital and has benefited from scientific and professional breakthroughs in theory, research, and applications. Our encyclopedia certainly will cover this central element, but our expanded conceptualization will include the other disciplines and will move beyond the individual.

She argues that Vichy wanted to return France to an illustrious and largely mythical past of harmony, where citizens all knew their places and fulfilled their responsibilities, where order prevailed. The National Revolution, according to Pollard, replaced the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity with work, family, and fatherland, making the acceptance of traditional masculine and feminine roles a key priority. This tradition of scapegoating stretches back to the nation’s founding and forms part of a contest over the legitimacy of the religion, both beyond and within Haiti’s borders. The Spirits and the Law examines that vexed history, asking why, from 1835 to 1987, Haiti banned many popular ritual practices. To find out, Kate Ramsey begins with the Haitian Revolution and its aftermath. Fearful of an independent black nation inspiring similar revolts, the United States, France, and the rest of Europe ostracized Haiti. Successive Haitian governments, seeking to counter the image of Haiti as primitive as well as contain popular organization and leadership, outlawed “spells” and, later, “superstitious practices.” While not often strictly enforced, these laws were at times the basis for attacks on Vodou by the Haitian state, the Catholic Church, and occupying U.S. forces. Beyond such offensives, Ramsey argues that in prohibiting practices considered essential for maintaining relations with the spirits, anti-Vodou laws reinforced the political marginalization, social stigmatization, and economic exploitation of the Haitian majority. At the same time, she examines the ways communities across Haiti evaded, subverted, redirected, and shaped enforcement of the laws. Analyzing the long genealogy of anti-Vodou rhetoric, Ramsey thoroughly dissects claims that the religion has impeded Haiti’s development.

In this book, Leslie Desmangles analyzes the mythology and rituals of Vodou, focusing particularly on the inclusion of West African and European elements in Vodouisants' beliefs and practices. Desmangles sees Vodou not simply as a grafting of European religious traditions onto African stock, but as a true creole phenomenon, born out of the oppressive conditions of slavery and the necessary adaptation of slaves to a New World environment. Desmangles uses Haitian history to explain this phenomenon, paying particular attention to the role of the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century maroon communities in preserving African traditions and the attempts by the Catholic, educated elite to suppress African-based "superstitions." The result is a society in which one religion, Catholicism, is visible and official; the other, Vodou, is unofficial and largely secretive.

It demonstrates how religion, ritual, and aesthetic practices affect lives on both sides of the Caribbean, and it debunks myths of exotic and primitive vodou (often spelled "voodoo"), which have long been used against Haitians. As Karen Richman shows, Haitians at home and in migrant settlements make ingenious use of audio and video tapes to extend the boundaries of their ritual spaces and to reinforce their moral and spiritual anchors to one another. The book and CD were produced in collaboration to give the reader intimate access to this new expressive media. Sacred songs are recorded on tapes and circulated among the communities. Migrants are able to hear not only the performance sounds--drumming, singing, and chatter--but also a description, as narrators tell of offerings, sacrifices, prayers, and the exchange of possessions. Spirits who inhabit the bodies of ritual actors are aware of the recording devices and personally address the absent migrants, sometimes warning them of their financial obligations to family members in Haiti. The migrants’ dependence on their home village is dramatically reinforced while their economic independence is restricted. Using standard ethnographic methods, Richman’s work illuminates the connections among social organization, power, production, ritual, and aesthetics.
