Yet for many, the story of Ruth is deeply dissatisfying. Scholars increasingly recognize how Ruth's textual “gaps” and ambiguities render conventional interpretations of the book's meaning and purpose uncertain. Feminist and queer interpreters question the appropriation of a woman's story to uphold patriarchal institutions and heteronormative values. Such avenues of inquiry lend themselves to questions of narrative desire, that is, the study of how stories frame our desires and how our own complex longings affect the way we read.

Book excerpt: The concept ‘human life’ and what it entails have become a prominent idea in current theological-ethical discourses, especially in the growing Christian reflection on bioethics, eco-ethics, and social justice. Contemporary Christian ethicists focus on concepts such as ‘flourishing life’, ‘happiness’ and ‘joy’, and how these deep human desires can be realised and fulfilled in life today amidst perennial surges of racism, xenophobia, sexism, systemic violence and policies and structures which further poverty and other forms of social injustices. Christian soteriology, and subsequent moral agency, grapples with the question: How can humans flourish in societies today, and how should Christian morality be defined and designed to be instrumental in the current pursuit of happiness, joy and hope? This publication aims to participate in this modern-day discourse by proposing relevant theological perspectives on the concept of life and, in particular, its relevance for Christians living in this age and in an environment that poses major challenges to public morality and the common good. In conjunction with the emerging theological interest in the concept of life, this project is a modest attempt to take part in the advancement of an ethic of life for today, under the rubric of an ethic of flourishing personhood. The point of departure is the biblical concept of the gift of life and what this gift entails for understanding human life, personhood and moral agency today. The line of reasoning in this book delineates the broad concept 'ethic of life' and the biblical concept 'gift of life' and draws the line towards an ethic of flourishing personhood. The central theoretical argument of the study is that reformed theology can give direction to the contemporary theological search for meaning and purpose of human life and offer answers to the questions on life facing humanity today, especially by pursuing the idea of flourishing personhood.

Our aim in hosting the symposium was to deepen mutual understanding and respect, highlight common ground, clarify points of difference, and unite us all in a quest to learn from the Scriptures and live in the light of the gospel. Book excerpt: Evangelical interpretation of 1 Timothy 2:8-15 (certainly at the level of detail) has, in the period from 1945 to 2001, changed from one of received consensus to confused plurality. This thesis provides an explanation of this phenomenon by identifying and analysing the influences within evangelical interpretation that contributed to and shaped it. The first part of the thesis (Section A) is foundational. It establishes the validity of using the term Evangelical as an heuristic concept and provides, by means of a wide-ranging and unique analysis of published discussions of 1 Timothy 2:8-15, the necessary evidence to demonstrate the changes that took place. The major part of the thesis (Sections B and C) provides, for the first time, a detailed investigation of these changes. This is undertaken with a view to establishing: (i) the factors that contributed to establishing the early consensus, (ii) the circumstances which acted as catalysts to review and on-going change, and (iii) the developments which shaped the manner in which discussion subsequently took place and which contributed to the plethora of contemporary interpretations of 1 Timothy 2:8-15. In doing so it adopts a methodology which self-consciously combines both diachronic and synthetic approaches and is thus able (a) to isolate more effectively major trends and their development and (b) to provide a framework for a more rigorous analysis. The resulting study concludes (Section D) that evangelical interpretation of 1 Timothy 2:8-15 for the period from 1945 to 2001 was embedded in and shaped by contemporary social and ecclesiastical changes and by its own internal dynamics as it responded to these developments. In particular, differing responses to emerging theological, linguistic, historical and cultural discussions and to contemporary hermeneutical debates have proved decisive. While two broadly distinguishable (and conflicting) approaches developed, they spawned a plethora of different exegetical options and variant interpretations.
