Book The Dravidian Languages

Download or read book The Dravidian Languages written by Sanford B. Steever and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dravidian language family is the world's fourth largest with over 175 million speakers across South Asia from Pakistan to Nepal, from Bangladesh to Sri Lanka as well as having communities in Malaysia, North America and the UK. Four of the languages, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu are official national languages and the Dravidian family has had a rich literary and cultural influence. This authoritative reference source provides unique descriptions of 12 of these languages, covering their historical development alongside discussions of their specialised linguistic structures and features. Each chapter combines modern linguistic theory with traditional historical linguistics and a uniform structure allows for easy typological comparison between the individual languages. Two further chapters provide general information about the language family - the introduction, which covers the history, cultural implications and linguistic background, and a separate article on Dravidian writing systems. This volume includes languages from all 4 of the Dravidian family's subgroupings: South Dravidian e.g. Tamil, Kannada; South Central Dravidian e.g. Telugu, Konda; Central Dravidian e.g. Kolami; North Dravidian e.g. Brahui, Malto. Written by a team of expert contributors, many of whom are based in Asia, each language chapter offers a detailed analysis of phonology, morphology, syntax and followed by a list of the most relevant further reading to aid the independent scholar. The Dravidian Languages will be invaluable to students and researchers within linguistics and will also be of interest to readers in the fields of comparative literature, South Asian studies and Oriental studies.

Download or read book Legends of India written by Edward Washburn Hopkins and published by . This book was released on 2003-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These legends are not translations of native Hindu poems, but embody a re-interpretation of tales told long ago in India, chiefly by those who were ethical or religious teachers. They seized upon various stories and adapted them to their needs. In doing so they inserted moral instruction, as they modified characters and scenes to serve the purpose of edification. ... I have endeavored to tell the tale as I conceive it to have been before it was tampered with, to remove the priestly interpretation and re-interpret the story as it should have descended to us, with the emotional implications (suppressed by the priests) intact." Edward Washburn Hopkins (1857-1932) was the Chair of Sanskrit Studies of Yale University. Hopkins was an excellent scholar but made his name principally as an exponent of India's religions. His book The Religions of India (1895) was for many years one of the principal works on the subject available in America and his Origins and Evolution of Religion published in 1923, sold well.

Book The Heroic Age of India

Download or read book The Heroic Age of India written by Nirmal Kumar Sidhanta and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: This book contains an in-depth analysis of the two Indian epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, with a view to studying these Sanskrit heroic poems as a parallel to similar poems of European lands. In this work, N.K. Sidhanta has examined these poems with a view to discover the kernel of the epic stories to which substantial additions have been made in the course of centuries. The author has also taken into account the various versions of these works besides discussing the problem of their chronology and has made judicious use of the Pauranic evidence. The masterly exposition of the subject based entirely on the study of the original material, the attempts at the reconstruction of the society, government and religion by the author, should prove to be of absorbing interest to those engaged in the study of India's past. The author has also appended detailed notes on the art of war, trade, code of law, social classes, food and funeral ceremonies of the Epic period, providing thereby much new information.
