Book The Power of His Brush

Download or read book The Power of His Brush written by Nikos Ligidakis and published by . This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Who is Rudolph Carl Gorman?" A passing glimpse into his life reveals an interesting person who lived an unconventional life. But the profound answer for this idiosyncratic character is intriguingly complex. "Which Gorman we are referring to?" A child born into poverty. A young man trying to survive in a prejudiced society. A struggling artist who, against insurmountable odds, separated himself from the pack. A creator of one-of-a-kind art to inspire generations of artists. A benevolent visionary or the one who, at the end, sank into wealth and alcohol. Enduring thousands of hours of research about a person that I have never met, I came to believe that he carefully cultivated his bigger-than-life persona. While it is a true expression that he enjoyed the journey of his success by celebrating life to the fullest, it reveals only one side of the man; a fraction of what he feels and thinks. Perhaps the good times were a reward for dealing with the challenging times; the extent of joyfulness responsible for the beauty of his work and its vast popularity. "Who is R.C. Gorman?" He is a Native American who wanted to live the American Dream. The poor kid from the reservation who wanted a better life, to supersede the temporary darkness with the bright lights. He succeeded, in fact, he did it in a white man's world. He did it with unwavering determination, consistent vision and of course, his immense talent. Nevertheless, as a newborn child, he wasn't expected to leave the hospital alive. The world would not know about R.C. Gorman if wasn't for the unusual nourishment of his great grandmother that kept him alive.

Book Enhancing the Effectiveness of Team Science

Download or read book Enhancing the Effectiveness of Team Science written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past half-century has witnessed a dramatic increase in the scale and complexity of scientific research. The growing scale of science has been accompanied by a shift toward collaborative research, referred to as "team science." Scientific research is increasingly conducted by small teams and larger groups rather than individual investigators, but the challenges of collaboration can slow these teams' progress in achieving their scientific goals. How does a team-based approach work, and how can universities and research institutions support teams? Enhancing the Effectiveness of Team Science synthesizes and integrates the available research to provide guidance on assembling the science team; leadership, education and professional development for science teams and groups. It also examines institutional and organizational structures and policies to support science teams and identifies areas where further research is needed to help science teams and groups achieve their scientific and translational goals. This report offers major public policy recommendations for science research agencies and policymakers, as well as recommendations for individual scientists, disciplinary associations, and research universities. Enhancing the Effectiveness of Team Science will be of interest to university research administrators, team science leaders, science faculty, and graduate and postdoctoral students.

Download or read book Power and Defiance written by Nikos Ligidakis and published by Inkwell Productions. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In reading this book, I hope you will discover how true it is that we all create our own world. Everything visible or invisible is merely a deceptive dream. Nothing exists unless we create it. We create new forms and then, unfortunately, we seem compelled to demolish them in order to create others. This pattern will continue on into eternity. But there is no doubt that great ideas, morality and religion are needed in all our lives; otherwise society would be a chaotic structure. Still, all must be governed by reason. We celebrate certain events that have changed the course of history and have shaped social structures, yet there are other events of seemingly less significance that have changed the destiny of millions of individuals, the ones that we never hear about.Once we come to understand the horrible nature of the unnecessary trials endured by common individuals as a result of the "arrogance of power," we will no longer be able to sustain an apathetic stance. The reality is that even in this 21st century and in many places on this earth today there exists wicked political structures that instigate the unending destructive cycle of those who seek power for personal gain or identity and those who defiantly oppose it.During the writing of Power and Defiance, I have only doubled my certitude that the law of civilization is to renew itself and to advance. Those who have the irresistible need to grasp and assimilate whatever they can from their surroundings, making it their own, in order to gain power, to rule the world if they can, will never persevere. I am convinced that the pitiless law of power-hungry individuals will eventually and always reach an inevitable downfall. It is true that arrogance is a sin that the universal harmony does not forgive. However, it is also certain that the common rule is destined to engender the annihilation of this destructive power. In seeking to find answers for the violence and killings that are overwhelming our society today, we seem to want to philosophize, yet we consistently arrive at the same conclusion: the merging of injustice, discrimination and poverty always creates the powerful ammunition for violence. The primitive need of victimized human beings to rise and demand justice with rifle in hand is well documented throughout history. I believe that unless the so-called civilized world invests in the education of children who live in hopelessness, they too will grow in darkness. The fate of future generations depends on our children who are called upon to create a world of their dreams. They will be the ones who will define triumph and despair for humanity. And so, I invite you to explore with me the "worst and the best" of humanity, politics and democracy as together we discover along the way, that each of us, left, right, religious, agnostic, activist, reactionary, theorists, conservatives, liberals, civilized, educated, scientists, artists, poor, rich, all of us are searching for the formula of life. A formula that I have no doubt exists.

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Fritz Scholder written by Fritz Scholder and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available again, this stunning volume examines the life and work of Fritz Scholder, the most influential, successful, and controversial Native American artist of the twentieth century. In the 1960s and '70s, the notion of American Indian art was turned on its head by artists who fought against prejudice and popular cliches. At the forefront of this revolution was Scholder (1937-2005), whose portrayals of Native American life combined realism, tragedy, and spirituality with the genres of abstract expressionism and pop art. This volume features hundreds of works from Scholder's career as a painter, printmaker, and sculptor. Essays explore the artist's major themes-humanity's place in the natural world, ancient mythical beings, women, Christian iconography, the millennium, and the afterlife as well as Scholder's role in the Native American community and the art world. A fascinating figure who fearlessly took on his own contradictions and those of his times, Scholder continues to generate passionate discussion. Fritz Scholder: Indian/Not Indian offers a lively, insightful exploration of his place in twentieth-century American art history as a colourist, expressionist, and figurative painter.
