Book Alternatives for Overtopping Protection of Dams

Download or read book Alternatives for Overtopping Protection of Dams written by Task Committee on Overtopping Protection and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Task Committee on Overtopping Protection of the Hydraulics Division of ASCE. This report summarizes the results of an inventory and evaluation of innovative spillway designs and overtopping protection systems developed to provide cost-effective safety modifications for existing dams. The information in this report, which covers pertinent projects in all stages from initial design through construction and operation, was derived from a literature search and a direct survey of the engineering community involved in dam safety modifications. The report contains a brief review of procedures to be used for assessment of the consequences of dam failure and the associated risks is presented for development of the design flood. This is followed by a discussion of innovative spillway designs and the state of the art in dam overtopping protection alternatives. ForØspillway design, this report especially focuses on the use of labyrinth spillways and fuseplug embankments. For overtopping protection systems, the report assesses roller-compacted concrete and precast concrete blocks for smaller dams and cast-in-place reinforced concrete slabs for larger dams. Nonstructural alternatives such as revised reservoir operating requirements and downstream early warning systems are also addressed.

Book Hydraulic Engineering of Dams

Download or read book Hydraulic Engineering of Dams written by Willi H. Hager and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 1081 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic engineering of dams and their appurtenant structures counts among the essential tasks to successfully design safe water-retaining reservoirs for hydroelectric power generation, flood retention, and irrigation and water supply demands. In view of climate change, especially dams and reservoirs, among other water infrastructure, will and have to play an even more important role than in the past as part of necessary mitigation and adaptation measures to satisfy vital needs in water supply, renewable energy and food worldwide as expressed in the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. This book deals with the major hydraulic aspects of dam engineering considering recent developments in research and construction, namely overflow, conveyance and dissipations structures of spillways, river diversion facilities during construction, bottom and low-level outlets as well as intake structures. Furthermore, the book covers reservoir sedimentation, impulse waves and dambreak waves, which are relevant topics in view of sustainable and safe operation of reservoirs. The book is richly illustrated with photographs, highlighting the various appurtenant structures of dams addressed in the book chapters, as well as figures and diagrams showing important relations among the governing parameters of a certain phenomenon. An extensive literature review along with an updated bibliography complete this book.

Book Spillway Design Step by Step

Download or read book Spillway Design Step by Step written by Geraldo Magela Pereira and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most dam accidents with hydroelectric plants are due to under-dimensioning of the maximum floods of spillway design, causing extravasation and dam breaks (this occurs in 23% of the accidents). This work highlights the relationship between spillway design and potential dam failure and other important aspects of these structures and presents the methodology of design based on the international experience on the subject. The book covers river basin studies and floods (the geology, geomorphology, hydrology, hydraulics, and layouts of the works). Further, spillway function, capacity and design flood, layouts, or arrangements, of hydroelectric works and types of spillways are treated in the book. Finally, the book discusses examples of dams that broke due to insufficient spillway capacity. The book is intended for engineers and the companies that design dams and power plants around the world, as well as students in dam and hydraulic engineering. In short, people interested in producing electricity that is clean and potentially cheaper than other sources.

Book Hydraulics of Stepped Spillways

Download or read book Hydraulics of Stepped Spillways written by H.-E. Minor and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-13 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a discussion of the latest research pertaining to the hydraulic design of spilways and to hydraulic engineering in general. It comprises the papers of a workshop organized to bring together engineers and scientists from around the world for the exchange of ideas on water flow over stepped spillways. This workshop covered a range of subjects from two-phase flow characteristics to refurbishment and implementation of spillways in existing dam structures, and the book also includes a number of illustrative case studies. Overall, this book is one of the first in the rapidly growing field of modern hydraulic engineering techniques. It will interest designers, scientists, and graduate students and researchers in the fields of hydraulic, civil and environmental engineering.
