Book excerpt: Reflecting the range of their honorand's interests, the essays in Ritual, Text and Law provide a stimulating and panoramic exploration of the interrelated fields of liturgy and canon law in the Middle Ages, chiefly through the scrutiny of texts and their transmission. Roger Reynolds' scholarly work has not only considered the relations between law and liturgy, but has also focused on liturgical practice and the evolution of rituals, paleography and the often complicated relationships between canonical collections, in particular the southern Italian Collection in Five Books. Due in large part to Reynolds' research, the fields of medieval canon law and liturgy are now recognized as fundamental elements of medieval religious and intellectual history that shed light on medieval Christian belief and practice. The studies are grouped thematically under the headings of 'Ritual' and 'Text and Law'. Each section has an introduction by the editors, in which they survey recent developments in the study of medieval canon law and liturgy with reference to Reynolds's own research, provide historical context for the individual studies, and draw attention to the ways in which the studies reflect current concerns. Individually, the contributors offer new viewpoints on key issues and questions relating to medieval religious, cultural and intellectual history, particularly of the period c.900-1200, and especially the Italian peninsula. Collectively they illuminate the interaction of medieval Christianity and its rituals, as well as the relationship of the secular and the sacred as transmitted in liturgico-canonical texts from the time of the early church to the 14th century.

  • Pages : 99 pages

Book excerpt: Quodlibet (kwd'l-bet'): a theological or philosophical issue presented for formal argument or disputation; usually humorous musical melody. Reading like a recipe including plenty of thought-provoking theology, a handful of double entendre, layers of perspective, and a dash of humor for a slightly thicker flavor, author Lance Barrett's poetic devices memorialize the daily challenges, failures, and successes of striving to become Christ-like. With a buffet of rhyming wonders, haikus, and aesthetically enticing words of wisdom and wit, Barrett offers a feast that will guide readers toward faith, hope, and the ability to love sacrificially. Creating what can only be considered an interpretation of the classic lyrical formulas, Quodlibet presents the emblematic characteristics of the Christian life. Ranging from poems under an overarching theme of goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, Barrett's work will lead readers to a deeper understanding of the greatest composer of rhyme and reason-God.

Book Quodlibets of the Viennese Theater

Download or read book Quodlibets of the Viennese Theater written by Lisa Feurzeig and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quodlibet genre was significant in Viennese theater during the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Quodlibets are important for two reasons: they reflect the ironic intertextuality of Viennese life, and they present a cross-section of music of many genres and styles that was most familiar to the theatergoing audience. This edition includes three works: Die travestierte Ariadne auf Naxos (ca. 1799), a one-act melodrama with spoken and sung sections; Rochus Pumpernickel (1809), a three-act play with musical numbers; and "Das beliebte Quodlibet" from Der Eheteufel auf Reisen (1821), a medley that represent different times and styles, tracing the history of the genre. Ariadne auf Naxos, a parody of the 1775 Brandes/Benda melodrama, borrows the original text almost completely, but replaces Benda¿s music with comical melodies drawn from the Vienna Volkstheater and adds a happy ending. Rochus Pumpernickel, with a story based on Molière and twenty-seven musical numbers, was the most successful of all the full-length quodlibet plays; the high-brow periodical Der Sammler paid it the back-handed compliment of saying that its author "writes for the box office, not for immortality." With music ranging from Mozart and Haydn to Méhul, Salieri, Weigl, Wenzel Müller, and anonymous folksong, it offers a rich assortment of material familiar and unfamiliar to modern scholars. Dance music plays a significant role, so this play also opens a window on the Viennese dance world. The medley "Das beliebte Quodlibet" combines opera, folksong, and Tyrolerlied into a quasi-political jab at the police state. The edition provides literal English translations of all the texts, and the two full-length works also include performable translations underlaid in the music. An extensive commentary section identifies musical sources and discusses how pieces are reinterpreted in their new contexts.

Book Franciscan Poverty and Franciscan Economic Thought 1209 1348

Download or read book Franciscan Poverty and Franciscan Economic Thought 1209 1348 written by Ryan Thornton and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-04-24 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Francis of Assisi started to use his family’s resources for religious purposes, his father took him to court. It was there that Francis dispossessed himself of everything and began a new life that soon inspired others to follow. Within a century, members of this Order of Friars Minor were among the first to dedicate complete treatises to discussions of buying, selling, and the whole of human exchange that is known as economics. The natural question to ask—and the one proposed here—is whether there might be a connection between the two, between Franciscan poverty and Franciscan economic thought?

Book Richard Kilvington s Quaestiones super libros Ethicorum

Download or read book Richard Kilvington s Quaestiones super libros Ethicorum written by Monika Michałowska and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the commentaries on Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics produced in the Middle Ages, that of Richard Kilvington is one of the most thought-provoking. Kilvington adopts a unique perspective of argumentation in which he applies concepts and terminology from the fields of logic and physics to ethical dilemmas. This unprecedented approach allows him to formulate original solutions to various ethical problems. He concentrates on the will, moral weakness, the relationship between the will and prudence, the change of virtues and vices, and the nature of ethical objects. The presented commentary is a valuable record of the philosophical debates at Oxford in the 14th century.

Book Theological Quodlibeta in the Middle Ages The Fourteenth Century

Download or read book Theological Quodlibeta in the Middle Ages The Fourteenth Century written by Chris Schabel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-12-31 with total page 807 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of two volumes on theological quodlibeta, records of special disputations held before Christmas and Easter ca. 1230-1330, mostly at the University of Paris, in which audience members asked the great masters of theology the questions for debate, questions de quolibet, “about anything.” The variety of the material and the authors’ stature make the genre uniquely fascinating. In Volume II, chapters by acknowledged experts cover the quodlibeta of John Duns Scotus, Peter Auriol, John of Pouilly, Peter of Auvergne, and Thomas Wylton; examine the pertinent writings of the religious orders, including the monks, canons regular, and mendicants; revise our understanding of important manuscripts containing quodlibeta; offer critical editions of significant texts; and demonstrate how these writings are crucial for our knowledge of the history of topics in metaphysics and natural philosophy. For all those interested in medieval studies, especially intellectual history.

Book The Idea of a Moral Economy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lawrin Armstrong
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2016-04-11

  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book The Idea of a Moral Economy written by Lawrin Armstrong and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Idea of a Moral Economy is the first modern edition and English translation of three questions disputed at the University of Paris in 1330 by the theologian Gerard of Siena. The questions represent the most influential late medieval formulation of the natural law argument against usury and the illicit acquisition of property. Together they offer a particularly clear example of scholastic ideas about the nature and purpose of economic activity and the medieval concept of a moral economy. In his introduction, editor Lawrin Armstrong discusses Gerard’s arguments and considers their significance both within the context of scholastic philosophy and law and as a critique of contemporary mainstream economics. His analysis demonstrates how Gerard’s work is not only a valuable source for understanding economic thought in pre-modern Europe, but also a fertile resource for scholars of law, economics, and philosophy in medieval Europe and beyond.

Book Walahfrid Strabo s Libellus de exordiis et incrementis quarundam in observationibus ecclesiasticis rerum

Download or read book Walahfrid Strabo s Libellus de exordiis et incrementis quarundam in observationibus ecclesiasticis rerum written by Alice Harting-Correa and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Libellus of the Carolingian monk Walahfrid presents a first history of the Eucharistic liturgy, with special reference to topics such as fasting, frequency of communion, and arrangement of sections of the mass. Walahfrid also examines the origins of certain liturgical actions in baptism, traces the development of hymnography, and considers the etymology of various terms for church architecture. Walahfrid's unusually explicit citation of sources makes his work of particular value to the modern historian. This translation is the first into modern English. The commentary establishes the place of the language and argument in the development of early writings on the liturgy, while also relating it to the wider context of non-liturgical writings from the Fathers to mid-ninth century. The author's detailed examinations of Walahfrid's sources—historical, legislative and literary—show the lines of transmission of texts and their availability in the Carolingian period.
