Book Judaism in Late Antiquity 2 Historical Syntheses

Download or read book Judaism in Late Antiquity 2 Historical Syntheses written by Jacob Neusner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes introduce the sources of Judaism in late antiquity to scholars in adjacent fields, such as the study of the Old and New Testaments, ancient history of Classical Antiquity, earliest Christianity, the ancient Near East, and the history of religion. Here, in two volumes, leading American, Israeli, and European specialists in the history, literature, theology, and archaeology of Judaism offer factual answers to the two questions that the study of any religion in ancient times must raise. The first is, what are the sources — written and in material culture — that inform us about that religion? The second is, how do we understand those sources in the reconstruction of the history of various Judaic systems in antiquity. The chapters set forth in simple statements, intelligible for non-specialists, the facts the sources provide. Because of the nature of the subject and acute interest in it, we also raise some questions particular to the study of Judaism, those dealing with its historical relationship with nascent Christianity in New Testament times. The work forms the starting point for the study of all the principal questions concerning Judaism in late antiquity and sets forth the most current, critical results of scholarship.

Download or read book A Call to Commitment written by Thomas Karimundackal and published by Echter Verlag. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deuteronomy 10:12-11:32 is a very important text for the book of Deuteronomy. However, it has not received an adequate exegetical treatment so far. The present study intends to meet this need. Following a synchronic approach Thomas Karimundackal examines the text exegetically and theologically in its context. He analyzes the text extensively by referring to its intense relationships within Deuteronomy and with other biblical books. He shows how Deuteronomy 10:12-11:32 serves as a hermeneutical key to understand and interpret the theology of Deuteronomy. As a transitional passage, it connects the former framework and the Law Code in Deuteronomy, and thus forms a bridge. In addition, it is repeatedly connected to the latter framework of Deuteronomy, and thus proves to be a hermeneutical key to the book. From a theological point of view, the unique statements about God in Deut 10 stand out. The author also reflects on the role of the community and the contemporary relevance of the text.

Book Leviticus and Its Reception in the Dead Sea Scrolls from Qumran

Download or read book Leviticus and Its Reception in the Dead Sea Scrolls from Qumran written by Baesick Choi and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-10-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large amount of Leviticus material has been found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. Yet there is surprisingly little secondary scholarly analysis of the role of Leviticus in this corpus. The book of Leviticus survives in several manuscripts; it also features in quotations and allusions, so that it seems to be a foundational source for the ideology behind the composition of some of the nonscriptural texts. Indeed this volume argues that the ideology of the Holiness Code persisted in the communities that collected the manuscripts and placed them in the Qumran Caves.

Book excerpt: Targum Onkelos is the most literal of the Targumim, yet it contains thousands of deviations from the Masoretic text, both blatant and subtle. Dr. Drazin examines these deviations, comparing each with the renderings of the other extant Targums: Pseudo-Jonathan, Neofiti, and the "Fragmenten-Targums." Where appropriate, the author takes note of the legal issues involved, and compares the Targumic rendering with rabbinic Halakhah. In this fifth volume of Ktav's annotated translations of Targum Onkelos on the Pentateuch, Dr. Drazin makes available a wealth of modern and ancient commentaries on Onkelos, including hitherto untranslated works such as Ohev Ger, Netinah la-Ger, and Be'urei Onkelos.

Book Patterns of Daily Prayer in Second Temple Period Judaism

Download or read book Patterns of Daily Prayer in Second Temple Period Judaism written by Jeremy Penner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-11-09 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Patterns of Daily Prayer in Second Temple Period Judaism, Jeremy Penner seeks to uncover the historical and social processes that underlie the origins and development of Jewish daily prayer practices, particularly the establishment of set times for daily prayer. Since daily prayer lacks explicit biblical warrant, this book seeks to explain how this custom was legitimized as divinely inspired. The importance of daily prayer was understood and experienced within a range of literary and social contexts, and thus different exegetical and etiological strategies develop at this time to legitimize its practice. In some cases daily prayer was coordinated with, and made analogous to, daily cultic sacrifice, in other cases, daily prayer was legitimized by identifying the origins of the practice in sacred scripture. Lastly, in some contexts daily prayer was coordinated with the cycles of celestial bodies in the heavens.

Book Dictionary of the Old Testament Wisdom Poetry and Writings

Download or read book Dictionary of the Old Testament Wisdom Poetry and Writings written by TREMPER LONGMAN III and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 1581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament books of wisdom and poetry carry themselves differently from those of the Pentateuch, the histories or the prophets. The divine voice does not peal from Sinai, there are no narratives carried along by prophetic interpretation nor are oracles declaimed by a prophet. Here Scripture often speaks in the words of human response to God and God's world. The hymns, laments and thanksgivings of Israel, the dirge of Lamentations, the questionings of Qohelet, the love poetry of the Song of Songs, the bold drama of Job and the proverbial wisdom of Israel all offer their textures to this great body of biblical literature. Then too there are the finely crafted stories of Ruth and Esther that narrate the silent providence of God in the course of Israelite and Jewish lives. This third Old Testament volume in IVP's celebrated "Black Dictionary" series offers nearly 150 articles covering all the important aspects of Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Psalms, Song of Songs, Lamentations, Ruth and Esther. Over 90 contributors, many of them experts in this literature, have contributed to the 'Dictionary of the Old Testament: Wisdom, Poetry and Writings'. This volume maintains the quality of scholarship that students, scholars and pastors have come to expect from this series. Coverage of each biblical book includes an introduction to the book itself as well as separate articles on their ancient Near Eastern background and their history of interpretation. Additional articles amply explore the literary dimensions of Hebrew poetry and prose, including acrostic, ellipsis, inclusio, intertextuality, parallelism and rhyme. And there are well-rounded treatments of Israelite wisdom and wisdom literature, including wisdom poems, sources and theology. In addition, a wide range of interpretive approaches is canvassed in articles on hermeneutics, feminist interpretation, form criticism, historical criticism, rhetorical criticism and social-scientific approaches. The 'Dictionary of the Old Testament: Wisdom, Poetry and Writings' is sure to command shelf space within arm's reach of any student, teacher or preacher working in this portion of biblical literature.

Book Is There a Text in this Cave Studies in the Textuality of the Dead Sea Scrolls in Honour of George J Brooke

Download or read book Is There a Text in this Cave Studies in the Textuality of the Dead Sea Scrolls in Honour of George J Brooke written by Ariel Feldman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is offered as a tribute to George Brooke to mark his sixty-fifth birthday. It has been conceived as a coherent contribution to the question of textuality in the Dead Sea Scrolls explored from a wide range of perspectives. These include material aspects of the texts, performance, reception, classification, scribal culture, composition, reworking, form and genre, and the issue of the extent to which any of the texts relate (to) social realities in the Second Temple period. Almost every contribution engages with Brooke’s own remarkably wide-ranging, incisive, and innovative research on the Scrolls. The twenty-eight contributors are colleagues and students of the honouree and include leading scholars alongside promising new voices from across the field.
