Book excerpt: A comprehensive monograph on the Atlantic Puffin. With its colourful beak and fast, whirring flight, this is the most recognisable and popular of all North Atlantic seabirds. Puffins spend most of the year at sea, but for a few months of the year the come to shore, nesting in burrows on steep cliffs or on inaccessible islands. Awe-inspiring numbers of these birds can sometimes be seen bobbing on the sea or flying in vast wheels over the colony, bringing fish in their beaks back to the chicks. However, the species has declined sharply over the last decade; this is due to a collapse in fish stocks caused by overfishing and global warming, combined with an exponential increase in Pipefish (which can kill the chicks). The Puffin is a revised and expanded second edition of Poyser's 1984 title on these endearing birds, widely considered to be a Poyser classic. It includes sections on their affinities, nesting and incubation, movements, foraging ecology, survivorship, predation, and research methodology; particular attention is paid to conservation, with the species considered an important 'indicator' of the health of our coasts.

Book Seabirds and Colonial Waterbirds of the Magdalen Islands

Download or read book Seabirds and Colonial Waterbirds of the Magdalen Islands written by Jean-François Rail and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This survey of breeding seabirds in 2007 updates the work done by Mousseau et al. (1976), Bourque and Richard (1992), and by the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) in 2000-2002, and was a collaborative effort between the CWS and Parks Canada. During an aerial survey that took place on June 9, photographs were taken of breeding colonies that were inaccessible or difficult to census by boat. The remainder of the colonies were visited either by boat or by foot, between June 8 and 22. The size of all colonies of breeding seabirds, plus the Great Blue Heron, were estimated, with the exception of the Northern Gannet which is censused during a specific survey every five years (next due in 2009). Census methods that were used are provided in detail for each site and species. For each species, the current status of the breeding population is discussed and comparisons are made with previous surveys, as well as with historical data, to determine local population trends"--Abstract, p. iii.

Book Planning Education to Care for the Earth

Download or read book Planning Education to Care for the Earth written by Joy Palmer and published by IUCN. This book was released on 1995 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Conservation Union brings together states, government agencies, and a diverse range of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in a unique world partnership that seeks to influence, encourage, and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature as well as to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. This book contains case studies in environmental communication and education that were presented at the General Assembly workshop of the World Conservation Union held in January 1994. The book is divided into three sections: the first seeks to provide some bases for planning education and communication, the second looks at NGO education programs, and the third addresses planning education at the national level. Papers include: (1) "Influences on Pro-environmental Practices" (Joy Palmer); (2) "Behaviour, Social Marketing, and the Environment" (William Smith); (3) "A Basis for Environmental Education in the Sahel" (Raphael Ndiaye); (4) "Communication: An Instrument of Government Policy" (Agnes Gomis and Frits Hesselink); (5) "Seabird Conservation on the North Shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence: The Effects of Education on Attitude and Behaviour towards a Marine Resource" (Kathleen Blanchard); (6) "Environmental Education Programmes for Natural Areas: A Brazilian Case Study" (Suzana Padua); (7) "Addressing Urban Issues Through Environmental Education" (Shyamala Krishna); (8) "The CAMPFIRE Programme in Zimbabwe: Changes of Attitudes and Practices of Rural Communities towards Natural Resources" (Taparendava Maveneke); (9) "IUCN in Environmental Education in Western Africa and the Sahel" (Monique Trudel); (10) "A Matter of Motivation" (Ibrahim Thiaw); (11) "Education and Communication Support to the Establishment of Protected Area Systems" (Rutger-Jan Schoen); (12) "Canada: National Environmental Citizenship Initiative" (T. Christine Hogan); (13) "The Netherlands: Inter-departmental Cooperation on Environmental Education" (Peter Bos); (14) "Scotland: Developing a National Strategy for Environmental Education" (John C. Book The Atlantic Alcidae

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alcidae, or auks, are one of the most abundant and specialized groups of seabirds in the world. They are also an extremely diverse group, exhibiting a remarkable range of form and ecological adaptations. This volume takes an in-depth and comprehensive look at these fascinating seabirds. New field study findings are incorporated into the coverage of a wide range of aspects, including breeding biology, population ecology, evolution, and conservation. [Original APL blurb] The auks, or Alcidae, are one of the most specialized groups of seabirds. They are also an extremely diverse group, exhibiting a fascinating range of form and ecological adaptations. Moreover, they are the seabirds most vulnerable to man's activities, especially oil pollution, and hence are of great concern to conservationists. The last ten to fifteen years have seen an enormous amount of work on the auks, including a number of long-term field studies. This book summarizes, for the first time, the information gained on breeding biology, population ecology, evolution, and conservation of the group. As well as being interesting in their own right, the auks have proved useful as model species with which to explore the many themes and problems in ecology and evolution. The title of this book pays fitting tribute to Finn Salomonsen, who in 1944 wrote his own Atlantic Alcidae, a largely taxonomic work on the auks. The enormous amount of ecological information added to this by the present volume should enable a full appreciation of the group and of the special conservation problems which they face.
