Book excerpt: Problem Definition: Quick response is a classic operations strategy, under which a retailer can place a second order for rapid replenishment during the selling season after learning more about market demand. This paper examines the value of quick response when a strategic manufacturer can either dynamically charge wholesale prices for different orders or commit to fixed wholesale prices at the beginning. Academic/Practice Relevance: Quick response has been widely viewed as an effective strategy for firms to match supply with demand. In practice, however, a manufacturer may strategically react to a retailer's adoption of quick response. This paper aims to investigate the value of quick response under strategic manufacturer, which has not been explored in the literature. Methodology: We develop a game-theoretic model to analyze the main drivers behind the interaction between the retailer and manufacturer. Results: We find that quick response can harm the retailer and the entire supply chain when demand uncertainty is in a medium range. This is due to the interplay of four different effects that will be delineated in the paper: the risk mitigation effect, the information surplus extraction effect, the strategic inventory effect, and the wholesale pricing flexibility effect. In addition, upfront commitment on wholesale prices does not mitigate the negative effect of quick response, and will even lead to a lose-lose outcome in most situations. Managerial Implications: The above results caution firms to be careful when adopting quick response, especially with strategic manufacturers. This research also characterizes the conditions under which quick response will be valuable, which offers a useful guideline for managers when assessing the quick response strategy.

Book excerpt: The gap between demand for consumer goods and their efficient supply is greater now than at any other time, and is widening as consumers' wants become less predictable, and suppliers struggle to meet them. Quick Response (QR) is both a management paradigm and a methodology that allows supply systems to react quickly to changes while improving their performance. QR aims to help organize a business in the face of problems associated with the vast array of goods and services now to be found in consumer markets. It is particularly relevant to the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) and Fashion industries. QR works by compressing the time between product or service design concept and appearance on the retail shelf. It then takes advantage of such recent technologies as Point of Sale (PoS) tracking and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) to constantly up-date estimates of true consumer demand, and then places intelligent re-orders for goods with flexible manufacturers and their suppliers. One of the features of this book is the demonstration that the range of industries able to benefit from the application of QR methodologies is extremely wide. However, this apparent universality comes with a strong 'health warning'. By placing QR in a broad framework of management thinking, the book allows comparison with other paradigms and their off-shoots - partnerships and alliances, measurement and benchmarking, Information Systems Technology strategies, Total Quality Management, and change management. Belief systems such as World Class Manufacturing, Lean Production, Agile Manufacturing, Virtual Organization, Time-Based Competition, Supply Chain Management (SCM) and chaos theory, are also reviewed and contrasted. The book then quantifies the performance benefits that accrue from the application of QR using examples from the US and European industries as well as computer simulation. Lessons are also drawn from a wide variety of SMEs (Small and Medium sized Enterprises) who are using QR as a strategic tool, as well as those who have not yet adopted it. For the latter, there are recommendations for implementing QR. The future management and research directions required for full exploitation of QR are also explored in a separate section. The most important aspect of this book is that it concentrates on the practical, hands-on management of a supply pipeline as opposed to the generalized theories of Supply Chain Management.

Book excerpt: Quick Response is an umbrella term for strategies to cut lead times and to eliminate unnecessary production costs from a manufacturing plant to a consumer market. In particular, the textile and apparel industries need strategies to quickly respond to a changeable market in the international supply chain. As the industry performs these strategies, problems can occur which interfere with implementing efficient Quick Response strategies. Until now, the textile and apparel industries have mainly focused on high technological systems to solve the problems; much development of the high technology has been accomplished in the international supply chain. In addition, the industries should recognize the importance of intangible factors (e.g., communication among sectors) because they might give rise to diverse problems in their supply chain. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the intangible factors and to research how they have had an influence on Quick Response strategies in the international supply chain. To investigate these factors, the study employed a case study which involved interviews with people who worked for-AGABANG Co. Six individuals in several positions of AGABANG Co. were represented in the interviews; two supervisors who were in charge of brands for Wal-Mart, a designer who developed and made production samples for Wal-Mart, an export staff member who sourced manufacturing systems and controlled manufacturing schedules, a manufacturer who managed manufacturing operations in China, and a subcontractor who provided cloth. Interviewees had working experiences with foreign buyers and manufacturers, and clearly testified to the intangible factors through their cumulated experiences. Through the interviews, this study identified various intangible factors in the international supply chain. In particular, the research found that one of the most critical the factors was pressure from buyers to reduce production costs. Also, based on the findings from this study, it was concluded that effective Quick Response systems require teamwork and relationships among sectors. As companies strive to reduce production costs and therefore move facilities building these relationships become challenging. Many textile and apparel companies hope to efficiently run their systems and strategies as they solve these problems. Therefore, the results of this research will be helpful for the textile and apparel companies that want to improve and develop their Quick Response strategies.
