Book Quick Pocket Guide to New Oral Anticoagulants for Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation

Download or read book Quick Pocket Guide to New Oral Anticoagulants for Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation written by Luca Masotti and published by SEEd. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardioembolic strokes account for one third of ischemic strokes and atrial fibrillation (AF) representing the main source of this stroke subtype. The rate of stroke is 5%/year in patients with AF. Patients with AF have a 2-7 fold increased risk of stroke compared to patients without. Stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (SPAF) is therefore of utmost importance and represents a major point in the modern management of AF. This booklet provides an overview of new oral anticoagulants used, listing their pharmacokinetis profile, the evidence of efficacy and their clinical use.

  • Author : Ozcan Basaran
  • Publisher : BoD – Books on Demand
  • Release : 2016-09-08
  • ISBN : 9535126660
  • Pages : 152 pages

Download or read book Anticoagulation Therapy written by Ozcan Basaran and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The available parenteral and oral anticoagulants have a large clinical use. Understanding biochemistry of anticoagulants may help to improve therapeutic strategies. Resistance to vitamin K antagonist drugs might be a problem for rodent populations. Patients who have thrombogenic risk factors should be anticoagulated. The need for cardiac implantable electronic devices is increasing, and there is a substantial number of patients who are on oral anticoagulant therapy. Prothrombin complex concentrate and other plasma concentrates are useful to deal with over-coagulated situations. The efficacy and safety of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants have been proven in large phase III trials. The real-world data suggest even better outcomes with these agents compared to vitamin K antagonists.
