The methods of imbedded Markov chains and semi-Markov processes, the delay cycle analysis, and the method of supplementary variables are extensively used. It surveys exact and approximate analytical solution methods and algorithms and their relevant properties. It also presents various application examples of queueing networks to model computer systems and communication networks. This book is organized in three parts. Part I introduces queueing networks with blocking and various application examples. Part II deals with exact and approximate analysis of queueing networks with blocking and the condition under which the various techniques can be applied. These systems have service time distributions & customer inter-arrival time distributions that are rational fractions in the transform domain. The methodology is based upon a queueing system representation called the PSEUDO STATE MODEL. To aid in the mathematics of setting up the model for a given queueing system, a special mathematical tool called the BRACKET TRANSFORM is introduced, & three chapters are devoted to the development & understanding of this tool. Bracket transform operations on the pseudo state model are carried out exclusively in the transform domain. The model readily yields statistical performance measures such as the state probabilities as seen by a random arrival, as well as those found by a disinterested observer. Waiting time distributions for customer delays in the system, or in the queue, are also obtained. The pseudo state model is adaptable to a wide diversity of complex queueing systems falling within the class defined above.
