Book Questions that Haunt Me In the Middle of the Night

Download or read book Questions that Haunt Me In the Middle of the Night written by Susan Barbaro and published by EI Alliance. This book was released on 2021-08-19 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally titled, What I Read When I Feel Like Shyt, I wrote this when I was feeling despondent, disgusted, like a loser and a failure. Fear not! I edited it when I felt better (actually after I wrote it and processed it). The questions, thoughts and issues I address were honest, loaded with integrity and adapted help from “elsewhere”. After plowing through the heart-wrenching questions, I felt a lot better at the end. Included in these pages are my painful questions and the powerful answers I contemplated and documented. It is clearly my way of viewing the world and brings forth the truths that I know. During this time of the Covid-19 pandemic, racial unrest and political bullying I needed some solace and had to create it for myself. Whenever I revisit that space of unrest within myself, I read this and find it helps me…maybe it will help you when you are in those moments, maybe not. I cannot tell, all I can do is share.

Book excerpt: A LOS ANGELES TIMES BESTSELLER In the face of systemic racism and state-sanctioned violence, how can we metabolize our anger into a force for liberation? White supremacy in the United States has long necessitated that Black rage be suppressed, repressed, or denied, often as a means of survival, a literal matter of life and death. In Love and Rage, Lama Rod Owens, coauthor of Radical Dharma, shows how this unmetabolized anger--and the grief, hurt, and transhistorical trauma beneath it--needs to be explored, respected, and fully embodied to heal from heartbreak and walk the path of liberation. This is not a book about bypassing anger to focus on happiness, or a road map for using spirituality to transform the nature of rage into something else. Instead, it is one that offers a potent vision of anger that acknowledges and honors its power as a vehicle for radical social change and enduring spiritual transformation. Love and Rage weaves the inimitable wisdom and lived experience of Lama Rod Owens with Buddhist philosophy, practical meditation exercises, mindfulness, tantra, pranayama, ancestor practices, energy work, and classical yoga. The result is a book that serves as both a balm and a blueprint for those seeking justice who can feel overwhelmed with anger--and yet who refuse to relent. It is a necessary text for these times.

Book Home Is Somewhere Else

    Book Details:
  • Author : Desider Furst
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 2012-02-01
  • ISBN : 1438403534
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Home Is Somewhere Else written by Desider Furst and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Nazi annexation of Austria in March of 1938, Desider Furst, his wife, and his daughter suddenly found themselves hunted outlaws, holders of a German passport branded with a red "J" for Jewish. They escaped from Vienna and eventually settled in England, where they spent the war years as "enemy aliens." In 1971 they emigrated once more, this time voluntarily, to the United States. Home is Somewhere Else is a dual-voice, autobiographical narration by father and daughter, recounting the family's displacements, obstacles, and repeated reversals. The experiences documented here are typical of many Central Europeans whose lives were radically and painfully affected by the Nazis. This book's originality lies in its narrative format and its revelation of what befell the "lucky" ones merely on the margins of the Holocaust.

Book Chasing an Illusive Dream

Book excerpt: Frankie Valens autobiography, Chasing An Illusive Dream, is a story that contains the drama and pathos that inspired the old clich, Truth is stranger than fiction. This story of a pop-singer is about fame and the loss of it, separation from family and children, and a dramatic return to the Lord. Frankies story is a story of rags to riches to rags that started back in 1967 but left him with an enduring celebrity status. Linda Stinnett, Derby, KS Informer. This book will help give the reader his family history, and the story of the mistakes and accomplishments he made, and the incredible journey he took. His feelings of rejection at every turn, the constant fear of never being accepted or good enough to make a difference, and yet he experienced fame and fortune, later becoming a gospel recording artist, and traveling with his concert pianist wife Phyllis nationwide for over 18 years in a full-time music ministry. This book attempts to answer such questions such as: Is Frankie related to the famous Mallory/Duracell battery family? Is Frankie related to the singer Richie Valens? Was Daniel Boone Frankies cousin? Does Frankie share a grandmother with the famous Lucille Ball? What about Frankie being related to the Piper Cub airplane family? Because Frankie never became a major recording artist, it took years of hard work and dedication for him to try and become a household name. Book Three Grains of Wheat

Download or read book Three Grains of Wheat written by Mike Papasavas and published by Hillcrest Publishing Group. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would you be willing to give up to discover the world beyond your front door? Three Grains of Wheat chronicles Greek island native Emmanuel Papasavas' journey of self-exploration. It is a journey of more than a few steps as he strips away the chaff of his former life as a wheat farmer's son in pursuit of a dream that leads him away from his family and everything he once knew. Picturesque Agios Isidoros - the small Greek village where plumbing was unheard of and money was a rare commodity - is where author Mike Papasavas began his life (and his memoir) more than sixty-five years ago. As a boy, Papasavas knew little except the ways of a wheat farmer's son. Even so, ingrained in him was a desire to discover something beyond his village, beyond his life as young, naive Emmanuel. This yearning led him into the expansive world beyond where he would discover art, poetry, romance, friendships, and much more - though the quest would cost him his name. When he was twenty years old, Emmanuel - now known as Mike - barely saved enough money to buy a one-way ticket to Germany for the purpose of getting a visa...and a new life. But his journey to freedom is a rocky one, finding him up against several nearly insurmountable complications, homelessness and poverty, Mike learns to tackle each obstacle with humor and hope. For him, often times not knowing where he will sleep tonight, faith is his ultimate compass. Mike's determination paves the road toward adventures and misadventures that will forever change him in this culturally diverse travelogue peppered with entertaining stories, personal reflections, and heart-wrenching memories."

Book Between Two Kingdoms

Download or read book Between Two Kingdoms written by Suleika Jaouad and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A searing, deeply moving memoir of illness and recovery that traces one young woman’s journey from diagnosis to remission to re-entry into “normal” life—from the author of the Life, Interrupted column in The New York Times ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, The Rumpus, She Reads, Library Journal, Booklist • “I was immersed for the whole ride and would follow Jaouad anywhere. . . . Her writing restores the moon, lights the way as we learn to endure the unknown.”—Chanel Miller, The New York Times Book Review “Beautifully crafted . . . affecting . . . a transformative read . . . Jaouad’s insights about the self, connectedness, uncertainty and time speak to all of us.”—The Washington Post In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter “the real world.” She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. It started with an itch—first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Next came the exhaustion, and the six-hour naps that only deepened her fatigue. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her twenty-third birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival. Just like that, the life she had imagined for herself had gone up in flames. By the time Jaouad flew home to New York, she had lost her job, her apartment, and her independence. She would spend much of the next four years in a hospital bed, fighting for her life and chronicling the saga in a column for The New York Times. When Jaouad finally walked out of the cancer ward—after countless rounds of chemo, a clinical trial, and a bone marrow transplant—she was, according to the doctors, cured. But as she would soon learn, a cure is not where the work of healing ends; it’s where it begins. She had spent the past 1,500 days in desperate pursuit of one goal—to survive. And now that she’d done so, she realized that she had no idea how to live. How would she reenter the world and live again? How could she reclaim what had been lost? Jaouad embarked—with her new best friend, Oscar, a scruffy terrier mutt—on a 100-day, 15,000-mile road trip across the country. She set out to meet some of the strangers who had written to her during her years in the hospital: a teenage girl in Florida also recovering from cancer; a teacher in California grieving the death of her son; a death-row inmate in Texas who’d spent his own years confined to a room. What she learned on this trip is that the divide between sick and well is porous, that the vast majority of us will travel back and forth between these realms throughout our lives. Between Two Kingdoms is a profound chronicle of survivorship and a fierce, tender, and inspiring exploration of what it means to begin again.
