Book Questions on the Principles of Economics

Download or read book Questions on the Principles of Economics written by Edmund Ezra Day and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-13 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Questions on the Principles of Economics Mastery of the principles of Economics demands more than a reading of text-books and supplementary selections. It calls for frequent and thoughtful consideration of problems, concrete and abstract, by which conceptions may be clarified, truths driven home, fallacies laid bare, and powers of analysis and discrimination developed. To furnish material for such discipline is the general design of this collection of questions. More specifically, such a collection in the hands of students in an introductory course in Economics may serve four main purposes: (1) Most obviously, the questions may stimulate the student's interest. Assigned in conjunction with portions of a text-book or collateral reading, they may tempt the student to relate for himself the abstract analysis to concrete conditions and events which he may observe, and find for a general argument its everyday, near-at-hand applications. (2) Secondly, such questions may aid in giving the beginner his points of compass in a first journey through a somewhat intricate subject. Thus he may more speedily acquire a sense of direction and proportion, a true perspective, which is easily missed in making the usual swift reconnaissance of the field of Economics. (3) In the third place, the questions may serve to prepare the way for more pointed and effective classroom discussion. By making the student's thinking less extemporaneous and haphazard, they may strengthen and deepen the analysis of more difficult points, and furnish a helpful plan for ordering and mastering the significant details of the simpler material. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Economics, Vol. 2 The length of the period that has elapsed since the appearance of the first volume of the English version seems to call for an apology on the part of the translator, and he tenders the same herewith. In doing so, he may, perhaps, be allowed to mention two extenuating circumstances. One is, that since the year 1903, when what has come to be known as the Fiscal Question was suddenly Sprung upon the country, the amount of time and energy at his disposal, after satisfying the claims of a very busy Department of the Public Service, has been greatly restricted. The other is, that a considerable portion of the translation had to be done a second time owing to the accidental destruction of a bundle of the completed manuscript during the translator's absence abroad. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Economics The principal changes in this edition are the following: dividing the chapters so as to make 37 instead of 16 as in the fourth edition; elaborating two or three chapters which were little more than lecture notes; abridging two or three discus sions which belonged rather to monograph literature; dimin ished use of formal principles; increased use of concrete illus trations and a general softening of the style. Disproportio-n and inconsistency have been diminished, but not yet removed. The most significant single change is the starting of the Crit ique of the Present Order with Distribution rather than Pro duction, - a change which naturally led to a complete reorgan ization of this discussion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Questions of the Day: Economic and Social This book is, nevertheless, in spirit and purpose, a series of studies in the principles which rule the questions of the time - the practical questions, which the people are engaged in settling into the policy of their social and economic conduct. It is an outlook upon public affairs, taken from an American observatory, and its discussions are calculated, as astronomers say, for the Western Hemisphere. Book Three Lectures on the Questions

Download or read book Three Lectures on the Questions written by William Neilson Hancock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Lectures on the Questions: Should the Principles of Political Economy Be Disregarded at the Present Crisis? And if Not, How Can They Be Applied Towards the Discovery of Measures of Relief? Next to the founder, we are much indebted to the Provost and Senior Fellows of this College, who, by accepting the endowment, gave the sanction of the highest educational authority in Ireland to the new science, and, by instituting an annual examination, with liberal prizes, afforded in creased encouragement to its systematic study. On this occasion, I cannot but express my deep sense of the public benefits thus conferred; whilst, at the same time, I must ascribe whatever knowledge of the science I have acquired, to the encouragement afforded to its study in this University. I have also to offer my most grateful acknowledgments to the Provost and Senior Fellows for the high honor they conferred upon me, in electing me to teach this science, an honor which, in proportion to its value, has excited my anxious apprehension lest the science should, at a time when public attention is peculiarly directed to its claims, in any way suffer from an imperfect discharge of my duties. I shall now state the plan which I propose to pursue in these public lectures. Into an exposition of the elementary principles of the science I do not intend to enter; such principles can be most successfully learned from the text books selected for the annual examination. Book Elements of Economics

Download or read book Elements of Economics written by A. Grant Fradenburgh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Economics This book is designed to be an introduction to the science of economics. Technical discussions and difficult terminology have been avoided. The author has endeavored to write a book of practical value to the student, but is convinced that any practical work must be founded upon sound theory. There are many economic questions upon which there may be differences of opinion. Both sides of most disputed questions are given. Students should be encouraged to draw their own conclusions after weighing the evidence. While the experience of most teachers of economics has convinced them that one book should be followed as a guide, students should read references in other works. Fortunately there are many excellent books - perhaps too difficult in parts for the beginner - containing many chapters that can be read with profit by even an immature student. Among many works suitable for reference purposes the following are especially recommended: Bulloch, Introduction to the Study of Economics; Carver, Principles of Political Economy; Ely, Outlines of Economics; Fetter, Principles of Economics; Seager, Introduction to Economics; and Turner, Introduction to Economics. Book The Elements of Political Economy

Download or read book The Elements of Political Economy written by James Laurence Laughlin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Political Economy: With Some Applications to Questions of the Day With the assumption that Political Economy is inhuman and pitiless, the reader will find no sym pathy in these pages, because such a belief is founded on an inadequate understanding of what the principles of a science really are, and principles can not be regarded as having personal qualities. On the contrary, it seems clear that the funda mental principles of economics are, when ultimate ly analyzed, but expressions of Christian truth. With this conviction, the labor problem has been here treated, not as a question to be settled by legislation, but as one to be met by all the forces which make for Christian character and self mastery. Book Exercises and Questions for Use with Principles of Money and Banking Classic Reprint

Download or read book Exercises and Questions for Use with Principles of Money and Banking Classic Reprint written by Harold Glenn Moulton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises and Questions for Use With Principles of Money and Banking This volume of exercises and questions is for use with the author's Principles of Money and Banking and is designed to serve as an aid in the working out or elucidation of those principles. It is coming more and more to be recognized by teachers of economics that if their work is to afford a genuine discipline to the student the text and lecture must be supplemented by an abundance of interpretative questions and concrete problems. Such aids are of course especially necessary where the basis of the course is not a formal text, but a book of readings made up of source materials, charts, tables, argu ments, and more or less conflicting opinions and points Of view. Indeed, with such a book they are indispensable. The exercises and questions in this volume have all been through the fire, having been used in mimeographed form in my classes for three years. Indeed, the first two-thirds Of the volume has been completely reorganized several times. I have followed the practice of making the revisions immediately following the class periods while the difficulties and problems suggested by the class discussions were fresh in mind. It is, of course, a common experience that certain questions prove ambiguous, that others carry the student too far afield or into problems that cannot be analyzed on the basis of ma terial already covered, and, even more important, that the arrange ment of the questions is pedagogically poor or unsound. I do not flatter myself, however, that the revisions the book has undergone in actual use have resulted in a high degree of standardization even for my own use, much less for the purposes of other teachers. In fact, I seriously doubt if any great amount of standardization is either possible or desirable, for I am a strong believer in individuality in instruction. Ideally, every teacher Should have his own book of questions, regardless Of the text used. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Political Economy Questions agitated in all assemblies-indeed, Wherever two or three are gathered together - ia the hovel no less than in the palace - in the village pot-house, as in the brilliant circles of metro politan rank and fashion - in the factory, as well as the club - have a direct practical relation to the constitution and interests of society. The conduct, the character, and the structure of governments and legislatures - the nature and probable results of laws to be enacted or repealed - taxation, the public debt, poor-laws, free trade - the condition and prospects of the great leading interests of the state, agricultural, commercial, and manufacturing - and, above all, of the labouring class, compre hending, as it does, the numerical majority, and, consequently, the physical powers of the com munity - these are now matters 'familiar to our ears as household words, ' the topics of daily, hourly conversation and discussion, in every corner of almost every land - often ignorantly, stupidly, blunderingly treated, it may be; - but still canvassed, spoken, written, read, thought. Book Some Leading

Download or read book Some Leading written by John Elliott Cairnes and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Leading: Principles of Political Economy Newly Expounded Though the following work is an attempt to recast some considerable portion of Political Economy, I should be sorry it were regarded as in any sense antagonistic in its attitude toward the science built up by the labors of Adam Smith, Malthus, Ricardo, and Mill. On the contrary, my hope is that it will - should its reasonings find acceptance - strengthen, in some sensible degree, and add consistence to that fabric. As regards those assumptions respecting human character and the physical conditions of external nature which constitute the ultimate premises of economic science, the position I have taken is identical with that of the four great writers I have named; and I have endeavored also to follow the method of combined deduction and verification by comparison with facts, which was theirs, and which is, as I believe, the only fruitful, or indeed possible method in economic inquiry. Nor do the final conclusions which I have reached differ very widely on any important points from those at which they had arrived. The points on which I have ventured to join issue with them are what, in Bacon's language, may be called the axiomata media of the science - those intermediate principles by means of which the detailed results are connected with the higher causes which produce them. If I have not deceived myself, there is in this portion of Political Economy, as at present generally received, no small proportion of faulty material; and the present work may be regarded as an attempt, so far as it goes, to replace this element of weakness with matter better fitted to endure the strain of modern criticism.
