This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Art in America, a Dissertation Upon Vital Topics of the Day: Perhaps of All Time It has been said: He is a poor cannot talk about his trade - philosophically, of course l for the great work is not to pull down, but to build up, as in this, humanity finds exceeding great and pure joy. Goethe exclaims, moreover: For eternal truths and lasting emotions one should go to the great writers of the past - true workers in the field Of literary art, all of them, - Who have outlived the changes of taste and time! Now as poet and sage combined in one, commend us to Solomon himself, not only the wisest of men, but ever evincing a most remarkable taste and fondest liking for the beautiful in Nature and in Art. For what can be more truly aesthetic, and certainly giving a leading and invaluable idea in decorative art - to say nothing of a highly appreciated suggestion to a landscape painter - than is to be found in the full significance of his familiar but imperishable proverb, A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of Silver? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aesthetics: A Study of the Fine Arts in Theory and Practice This work, then, is the result of the application to aes thetic theory and artistic practice of two realistically meta physical postulates: one, that there is a value in the world corresponding to what we experience as the feeling of the beautiful, responsible for the arousal of that feeling but at the same time ontologically independent of all such effects or interactions with human beings; two, that such independ ent aesthetic value is analyzable into relations of structure and function, so that for every value there is a relation, or structure or function, or a set of them, and conversely. The topic chosen could very well be described as the nature of art, with due regard for the many and varied meanings of 'nature'. The aim has been to emphasize the ontological lack of difference between art and other parts of nature. In this work - the chapters on psychological aspects included ontology is deemed to be central to all questions of aesthetics and art. Book The Philosophy of the Beautiful Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Philosophy of the Beautiful Classic Reprint written by William Angus Knight and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Beautiful It may be presented, in the first instance, through a series Of questions, thus - Why do we call any single Object in Nature beautiful? When we go beneath the surface of commonplace admiration, and affirm that any particular thing possesses Beauty, what do we really mean by the assertion? How comes it that one object partakes of Beauty while another does not Is there any fixed relation between the many different Objects which, taken individually, are called beautiful? If so, what is that relation Does the Beauty they partake of separate them from one another? Or does it unite them together? Leaving individual Objects, what is Beauty in itself? Is its essence knowable approximately, or in fragment? Can it be apprehended by us indirectly, if not directly, and be understood through analogy, if not by intuition? In thus stating the problem from various points of view, questions of Science have been mixed up with those Of Philosophy; but, as we proceed, these will be disengaged, and separately handled. Book The Spectrum of Truth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spectrum of Truth Classic Reprint written by Alfred Bowyer Sharpe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spectrum of Truth The following pages have no pretension to be a history of philosophy, or to discuss or appraise the merits of different theories. All that is aimed at is to provide a conspectus within the smallest possible compass, of the characteristic attitude of the chief philosophical systems towards the great speculative questions with which philosophy is directly concerned. Recent, and regrettable theological controversies have turned mainly upon certain great questions that fall strictly within the province of philosophy, and some simple apparatus such as is here provided is a necessary equipment for those who have made no special study of the subjects, but desire to form an Opinion of the merits of the questions at issue. And it is hoped that the condensed form of this slight sketch may be of use even to students of philosophy by bringing into prominence certain points of agreement and harmony which are for the most part overlaid and obscured by lengthy disquisitions, but which show clearly in a mere map of the country. Book The Philosophy of Art The Question of Definition

Download or read book The Philosophy of Art The Question of Definition written by Tiziana Andina and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-04-11 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the philosophies of art developed by the continental authors and studies of Anglo-American philosophers, this book presents a panorama of the philosophy of art. It discusses definitions offered from the analytical school including Arthur Danto's representationalism, Dipert's theories of artefactualism, Dickie's institutional and procedural theories and Levinson's historical and cultural theories. From the continental theories it reflects on Hegel's notion of philosophy of art, Martin Heidegger's and Hans Georg Gadamer's hermeneutic tradition and Alexius Meinong's theory of objects. This range of definitions and theories are judged and defended using a form of representationalism that begins with the results of Arthur Danto's thinking and integrates the aesthetic reflection of the Baumgarten School. The result is not only a presentation of philosophy of art from the beginning of the twentieth century to present day, but a study that proposes a theory capable of synthesizing the finest contributions of the analytic and continental traditions.

Book Aesthetics and the Philosophy of Art

Download or read book Aesthetics and the Philosophy of Art written by Robert Stecker and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2010-02-16 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praised in its original edition for its up-to-date, rigorous presentation of current debates and for the clarity of its presentation, Robert Stecker's new edition of Aesthetics and the Philosophy of Art preserves the major themes and conclusions of the original, while expanding its content, providing new features, and enhancing accessibility. Stecker introduces students to the history and evolution of aesthetics, and also makes an important distinction between aesthetics and philosophy of art. While aesthetics is the study of value, philosophy of art deals with a much wider array of questions including issues in metaphysics, epistemology, the philosophy of mind, as well value theory. Described as a 'remarkably unified introduction to many contemporary debates in aesthetics and the philosophy of art,' Stecker specializes in sympathetically laying bear the play of argument that emerges as competing views on a topic engage each other. This book does not simply present a controversy in its current state of play, but instead demonstrates a philosophical mind at work helping to advance the issue toward a solution.

Book Discussions on Philosophical Questions Classic Reprint

Download or read book Discussions on Philosophical Questions Classic Reprint written by John Lafayette Girardeau and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-16 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discussions on Philosophical Questions As to the Discussions themselves, their main purpose is to advance the Scottish school of philosophy. They are not intended to be a system in themselves. This book is really a supplement to Hamilton's Metaphysics, in connection with which it ought to be studied. It seeks to correct what is considered incorrect in Hamil ton; to develop more fully his system; and to bring it down to the present time - answering the obj eetions and refuting the errors of opposing systems in their latest expressions. These discussions were prepared by the author in his mature years, some of them having been written, and all of them having been revised by him since 1890. They fairly represent, therefore, his ability, his scholarship, and the final conclusions of his life of study. Book Games

  • Author : C. Thi Nguyen
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2020
  • ISBN : 0190052082
  • Pages : 253 pages

Download or read book Games written by C. Thi Nguyen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Games are a unique art form. The game designer doesn't just create a world; they create who you will be in that world. They tell you what abilities to use and what goals to take on. In other words, they specify a form of agency. Games work in the medium of agency. And to play them, we take on alternate agencies and submerge ourselves in them. What can we learn about our own rationality and agency, from thinking about games? We learn that we have a considerable degree of fluidity with our agency. First, we have the capacity for a peculiar sort of motivational inversion. For some of us, winning is not the point. We take on an interest in winning temporarily, so that we can play the game. Thus, we are capable of taking on temporary and disposable ends. We can submerge ourselves in alternate agencies, letting them dominate our consciousness, and then dropping them the moment the game is over. Games are, then, a way of recording forms of agency, of encoding them in artifacts. Our games are a library of agencies. And exploring that library can help us develop our own agency and autonomy. But this technology can also be used for art. Games can sculpt our practical activity, for the sake of the beauty of our own actions. Games are part of a crucial, but overlooked category of art - the process arts. These are the arts which evoke an activity, and then ask you to appreciate your own activity. And games are a special place where we can foster beautiful experiences of our own activity. Because our struggles, in games, can be designed to fit our capacities. Games can present a harmonious world, where our abilities fit the task, and where we pursue obvious goals and act under clear values. Games are a kind of existential balm against the difficult and exhausting value clarity of the world. But this presents a special danger. Games can be a fantasy of value clarity. And when that fantasy leaks out into the world, we can be tempted to oversimplify our enduring values. Then, the pleasures of games can seduce us away from our autonomy, and reduce our agency."--

Book What Is Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book What Is Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Edmond Holmes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore some of the most fundamental questions of philosophy in this short but powerful book. Originally published in 1905, Edward Gore Alexander Holmes' What is Philosophy is the author's essay on the nature of philosophical discourse. Holmes was an educator, a poet, and a philosopher, and was well-regarded in his time for the contributions he made to the educational-sphere, where his views were considered progressive. In this book's 83 pages Holmes attempts to answer some of the biggest, but also most fundamental, questions about philosophy. For example, the essay opens with a discussion of the nature of truth, and the suitability for the philosopher to seek out truth. Frequent comparisons are made between the scientist, the artist, and the philosopher, and the strengths and limitations of each in the pursuit of greater understanding. It is a refreshing viewpoint assumed by Holmes, one that lends an air of weight to the work of artists and academics. There are many questions posed in What is Philosophy, and any student of philosophy will see value in its study. This essay would in fact make for an excellent Philosophy 101, as it serves as an excellent introductory point to modern philosophical thought, while still remaining interesting for those with a broader background in the topic. Even those not keenly interested in the study of philosophy may enjoy this read, primarily as an extended thought exercise. For while Holmes poses many questions, there are fewer answers. "There are no indisputable premises in Philosophy," Holmes says. "What is indisputable for one man, is doubtful for another, meaningless for a third, incredible for a fourth. The personal element is sure to assert itself, and cannot be eliminated." Whether you are a seasoned student of philosophy or somebody looking for their introduction into philosophical readings, What is Philosophy is a worthwhile read.
