He supplies the serious Bible student with a full unfolding of the spiritual content of the Word, linguistically and exegetically supported. He does not burden the reader with a mass of textual criticism and technicalities but gives him the results of a scholarly text study of the Greek original. - Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my youth, I had very high personal standards that I attempted to achieve by my own unsuccessful efforts. Keenly aware of my spiritual and psychological brokeness, I was burdened with guilt. In my frustration, I found new peace and hope in the proclamation in Romans that we must trust in God's forgiveness and cannot be saved by trying to live up to the law. I read and reread the entire epistle many times. Subsequently, as a doctoral student, I engaged in a more "scholarly" study of Romans. Although I learned an enormous amount from the scholars who had preceded me, I also came to the conclusion that they had overlooked a fundamental aspect of the basic structure and purpose of Romans. This is that Paul is here presenting his gospel message in such a way that it will appeal both to Jews and Gentiles. This goal shapes both the structure of the letter and much of its thought and makes Romans especially relevant today as we attempt to deal with pluralism. I have also been dismayed for some time that there is a shortage of good biblical study guides. Most genuinely informed and creative books on the Bible are written primarily for scholars and are too technical (and often too long) to be accessible to general readers. This book is the result. Here I present my own understanding of the structure and purpose of Romans and, at the same time, provide a survey of this epistle that any educated reader can follow and that will be useful for group Bible study as well. I hope that you find it helpful.

This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 1 Sacred criticism, which prepares for the exposition of the books of the Bible, has for its object to elucidate the various questions relating to their origin; and of those questions there are always some which can only be resolved with the help of the exegesis itself. The problem of the composition of the Epistle to the Romans includes several questions of this kind. We could not answer them in this introduction without anticipating the work of exegesis. It will be better, therefore, to defer the final solution of them to the con cluding chapter of the commentary. But there are others the solution of which is perfectly obvious, either from the simple reading of the Epistle, or from certain facts established by church history. It cannot be other than advantageous to the exposition to gather together here the results presented by these two sources, which are fitted to shed light on the origin of our Epistle. It will afford an opportunity at the same time of explaining the different views on the subject which have arisen in the course of ages.
