Book Questions of Uniqueness and Resolution in Reconstruction from Projections

Download or read book Questions of Uniqueness and Resolution in Reconstruction from Projections written by M. B. Katz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reconstruction from projections has revolutionized radiology and has now become one of the most important tools of medical diagnosis The E. M. I. Scanner is one example. In this text, some fundamental theoretical and practical questions are resolved. Despite recent research activity in the area, the crucial subject of the uniqueness of the reconstruction and the effect of noise in the data posed some unsettled fundamental questions. In particular, Kennan Smith proved that if we describe an object by a C^inf_o function, i.e., infinitely differentiable with compact support, then there are other objects with the same shape, i.e., support, which can differ almost arbitrarily and still have the same projections in finitely many directions. On the other hand, he proved that objects in finite dimensional function spaces are uniquely determined by a single projection for almost all angles, i.e., except on a set of measure zero. Along these lines, Herman and Rowland in "Three Methods for reconstructing objects from x-rays: a comparative study" (1973) showed that reconstructions obtained from the commonly used algorithms can grossly misrepresent the object and that the algorithm which produced the best reconstruction when using noiseless data gave unsatisfactory results with noisy data. Equally important are reports in Science, and personal communications by radiologists indicating that in medical practice failure rates of reconstruction vary from four to twenty percent. within this work, the mathematical dilemma posed by Kennan Smith's result is discussed and clarified.

Book Three Dimensional Electron Microscopy of Macromolecular Assemblies

Download or read book Three Dimensional Electron Microscopy of Macromolecular Assemblies written by Joachim Frank and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-02-02 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cryoelectron microscopy of biological molecules is among the hottest growth areas in biophysics and structural biology at present, and Frank is arguably the most distinguished practitioner of this art. CryoEM is likely over the next few years to take over much of the structural approaches currently requiring X-ray crystallography, because one can now get good and finely detailed images of single molecules down to as little as 200,000 MW, covering a substantial share of the molecules of greatest biomedical research interest. This book, the successor to an earlier work published in 1996 with Academic Press, is a natural companion work to our forthcoming book on electron crystallography by Robert Glaeser, with contributions by six others, including Frank. A growing number of workers will employ CryoEM for structural studies in their own research, and a large proportion of biomedical researchers will have a growing interest in understanding what the capabilities and limits of this approach are.

Book Mathematical Approaches to Problems in Resource Management and Epidemiology

Download or read book Mathematical Approaches to Problems in Resource Management and Epidemiology written by Carlos Castillo-Chavez and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, mathematical methods are being used to advantage in addressing the problems facing humanity in managing its environment. Problems in resource management and epidemiology especially have demonstrated the utility of quantitative modeling. To explore these approaches, the Center of Applied Mathematics at Cornell University organized a conference in Fall, 1987, with the objective of surveying and assessing the state of the art. This volume records the proceedings of that conference. Underlying virtually all of these studies are models of population growth, from individual cells to large vertebrates. Cell population growth presents the simplest of systems for study, and is of fundamental importance in its own right for a variety of medical and environmental applications. In Part I of this volume, Michael Shuler describes computer models of individual cells and cell populations, and Frank Hoppensteadt discusses the synchronization of bacterial culture growth. Together, these provide a valuable introduction to mathematical cell biology.

Book Information Processing in Medical Imaging

Download or read book Information Processing in Medical Imaging written by Alan C.F. Colchester and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1991-06-20 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1991 International Conference on Information Processing in Medical Imaging (IPMI '91) is the twelfth in the series and was held in Wye College, part of the University of London. The purpose of IPMI is to provide a forum for the detailed examination of methodological issues in computing which are at the heart of advances in medical image formation, manipulation and interpretation. This volume presents the proceedings of IPMI '91. Full-length scientific papers describing the latest techniques and results are organized into the following nine sections: - Image formation and reconstruction - Incorporation of priors in tomographic reconstruction - Multi-modal registration - Segmentation: specific applications - Segmentation: multi-scale, surfaces and topology - Anatomical models and variability - Factor analysis - Rule based systems and learning - Image quality, display and interaction. The volume also includes a set of color plates and a subject index. The book provides an up-to-date account of current work in the expanding and fast-moving area of image processing and medical imaging, and gives an overview of work at all the key centers researching in this area. It will prove an invaluable asset to all researchers working in the area and to the libraries of organizations involved in imaging research.

Book Modelling of Patterns in Space and Time

Download or read book Modelling of Patterns in Space and Time written by W. Jäger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the work shop "Modelling of Patterns in Space and Time", organized by the 80nderforschungsbereich 123, "8tochastische Mathematische Modelle", in Heidelberg, July 4-8, 1983. The main aim of this workshop was to bring together physicists, chemists, biologists and mathematicians for an exchange of ideas and results in modelling patterns. Since the mathe matical problems arising depend only partially on the particular field of applications the interdisciplinary cooperation proved very useful. The workshop mainly treated phenomena showing spatial structures. The special areas covered were morphogenesis, growth in cell cultures, competition systems, structured populations, chemotaxis, chemical precipitation, space-time oscillations in chemical reactors, patterns in flames and fluids and mathematical methods. The discussions between experimentalists and theoreticians were especially interesting and effective. The editors hope that these proceedings reflect at least partially the atmosphere of this workshop. For the convenience of the reader, the papers are ordered alpha betically according to authors. However, the table of contents can easily be grouped into the main topics of the workshop. For practical reasons it was not possible to reproduce in colour the beautiful pictures of patterns shown at the workshop. Since a larger number of half-tone pictures could be included in this volume, the loss of information has, however, been kept to a minimum. The workshop has already stimulated cooperation between its parti cipants and this volume is intended to spread this effect.
