This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Questions of the Day in Philosophy and Psychology These essays are in the main an expansion of a course of public lectures which I delivered in this University during the winter of 1910-11 under the general title: "Some Recent Philosophical Movements." In the case of Nos. V.and IX, I have availed myself freely of material which I had already published in another form in the Hibbert Journal and the International Journal of Ethics: for permission to do so I am indebted to the courtesy of the Editors of these magazines. A considerable proportion of the audience to which the lectures were addressed consisted of persons possessing little previous knowledge of the subject, and the essays as now published are intended to be intelligible to the general educated reader. To those versed in the technicalities of philosophical discussion this must be my apology for the popular style in which these papers are written. I am well aware that the book is lacking in unity. But while the subjects treated are miscellaneous I have endeavoured to keep a single purpose in view. It is now admitted that, for good or for evil, psychology has come to occupy a position very different from that which it held a generation ago. Book Questions on Psychology Metaphysics and Ethics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Questions on Psychology Metaphysics and Ethics Classic Reprint written by Frederick Ryland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Questions on Psychology, Metaphysics, and Ethics For those signed H. S. And H. S. F., I am indebted to the kindness of Professor Sidgwick and Professor Foxwell respectively, who gave me permission to use questions from their class-room papers of 187 3 - 6. The arrangement has not been altogether an easy matter. A question has often had to be included in a group to which it does not seem quite naturally to belong, because it consists of two parts, more or less heterogeneous, or because it has appeared undesirable to increase indefinitely the number of groups. On the other hand, questions very much alike have been included under two or more different headings, because the subject to which they refer might be fairly treated from various distinct points of view. In the Appendix, besides a number of miscellaneous questions, will be found reprinted in full a few papers set during the year 1886. Although chiefly intended for students, this collection will pro bably be of service to teachers, and very possibly to examiners. It may serve to widen the scope of examinations, which is often very narrow and to draw attention to the fact that in them certain departments of philosophy are hardly touched on at all. Book Studies in Philosophy and Psychology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Philosophy and Psychology Classic Reprint written by Former Students of Charles Edwar Garman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Philosophy and Psychology The Editors think that the best preface to this com memorative volume is to be found in the following letter from Professor Garman to President G. S. Hall of Clark University. It was written without thought of publication, but subsequently, with the author's consent, appeared in the American Journal of Psychology, volume ix, 1898. The Editors venture to reprint the letter without the knowledge of Professor Garman, believing that while his course has been changed in detail to give greater promi nence to social problems, the - essential principles remain the same. This course has been for a quarter of a century, not only to those who have continued their philosophical studies, but to all Amherst men who have taken it, the realization of Plato's conception of education, the turn ing of the mind to reality. Book Mental and Moral Science

Download or read book Mental and Moral Science written by Alexander Bain and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mental and Moral Science: A Compendium of Psychology and Ethics The present treatise contains a Systematic Exposition of mind, a History of the leading questions in Mental Philosophy, and a copious Dissertation on ethics. The Exposition of mind, occupying nearly half the work, is, for the most part, an abridgement of my two volumes on the subject. I have singled out, and put in conspicuous type, the leading positions and have given a sufficient number of examples to make them understood. It is not to be expected that the full effect of the larger exposition can be produced in the shorter; still, there may be an occasional advantage in the more succinct presenta tion of complicated doctrines. Book The Journal Philosophy Psychology and Scientific Methods Vol 10

This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal Philosophy, Psychology and Scientific Methods, Vol. 10: January-December, 1913 This general scientific attitude involves, among other things, the scientific view of man, which I frankly accept. I see no good reason why we should not make an independent study of man to-day, and make that basal in our interpretation of men's relations to one another, than that Plato or Aristotle should have made such a study in their _day. But such an attitude is far-reaching. It is said that Spencer was the first to suggest an evolution of the soul parallel with the evolution of the physical self.2 If one accepts this, and it seems to go along with the general theory of evolution, then one is on the opposite side of the fence from Plato and Aristotle and those who have been especially in uenced by their views. This cuts wide and deep, and is too little appreciated. In connection with the field of ethics, I discuss the relation of ethics to the other fields of thought, especially psychology, sociology, and religion. The relation to psychology raises the question of the kind of psychology, and the answer that I find is experimental psychology. That is, of course, recent, and there is much as yet undetermined. But the relation of ethics as a variable, dependent upon scientific psychology, itself a variable, is, to my mind, prefer able to any static relation. Book An Introduction to General Psychology Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to General Psychology Classic Reprint written by Robert Morris Qgden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to General Psychology The chief motives for the writing of the present book were two. The first of these was to supply a general elementary text-book which would meet the demands of the average student beginner a little more adequately than has been done hitherto. After ten years' experience in teaching a first course in Psychology, I have become convinced that the mode of attack usually followed fails to supply the student with the sort of introduction into the science of mind that will enable him, on the one hand, to connect his Psychology with every day life, and, on the other hand, to apprehend the bearings of this science upon Philosophy, Education, Sociology and Biology. It has been my experience that so much time was consumed in the study of the nervous system, and of the experimental data of sensation and percep tion, that in a brief course no adequate considera tion could be given to mind as a whole, and to the important topics of personality and character. To introduce a student to the study of Psychology is one thing, and no doubt the detailed study of psychophysiological data, with their appropriate laboratory exercises, is a most satisfactory means to this end. But the function of Psychology in an undergraduate college course is another thing, and is not purely departmental. The average student does not go beyond the first brief course. He does, however, frequently elect further work in Philosophy and Education, Sociology and Biol ogy. In coming to these subjects he should bring with him psychological conceptions of a general sort that will be useful to him. It is the consciousness of this need which has supplied the first motive for this book. How well I may have succeeded, it is beyond me to say. Many defects will doubtless be apparent to the critical reader. I can only hope that they may not prove serious enough to invalidate the purpose which I have had in view. The question was continually pressing in the treatment of each topic: How much and how little should be said? In my endeavor to keep the book within such limits as would make it practicable to cover the ground completely in a one-term course. Book The Evolution of Morality

Download or read book The Evolution of Morality written by Richard Joyce and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2007-08-24 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moral thinking pervades our practical lives, but where did this way of thinking come from, and what purpose does it serve? Is it to be explained by environmental pressures on our ancestors a million years ago, or is it a cultural invention of more recent origin? In The Evolution of Morality, Richard Joyce takes up these controversial questions, finding that the evidence supports an innate basis to human morality. As a moral philosopher, Joyce is interested in whether any implications follow from this hypothesis. Might the fact that the human brain has been biologically prepared by natural selection to engage in moral judgment serve in some sense to vindicate this way of thinking—staving off the threat of moral skepticism, or even undergirding some version of moral realism? Or if morality has an adaptive explanation in genetic terms—if it is, as Joyce writes, "just something that helped our ancestors make more babies"—might such an explanation actually undermine morality's central role in our lives? He carefully examines both the evolutionary "vindication of morality" and the evolutionary "debunking of morality," considering the skeptical view more seriously than have others who have treated the subject. Interdisciplinary and combining the latest results from the empirical sciences with philosophical discussion, The Evolution of Morality is one of the few books in this area written from the perspective of moral philosophy. Concise and without technical jargon, the arguments are rigorous but accessible to readers from different academic backgrounds. Joyce discusses complex issues in plain language while advocating subtle and sometimes radical views. The Evolution of Morality lays the philosophical foundations for further research into the biological understanding of human morality.
