Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Questions of the Day The author of the following work has lived long enough in the world, to have observed, not without much reflexion, all those stirring events of the present century, which have chiefly influenced society as now existing. Looking back to the rapid flight of time past, and anticipating a yet more swift passing away of that which remains, he is anxious for the present to say a few words to the public, on subjects which are obviously and intimately connected with human welfare. For there are few thoughts that press with more painful weight upon his mind, in connexion with his expected departure hence, than the deep conviction, that no small part of the misery he must leave behind him in the world is easily preventible, and that yet little is done for its prevention. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book Essays on Questions of the Day

Download or read book Essays on Questions of the Day written by Goldwin Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Questions of the Day: Political and Social These Essays are the outcome of discussions in which the writer has been engaged on the several questions, and arc partly drawn from papers contributed by him to different periodicals. Of the subjects some are specially British, though not without interest for a citizen of the United States; others are common to both countries. Some service may be done by bringing an important question into focus, even when the reader does not agree with the opinions of the writer. The opinions of the present writer are those of a Liberal of the old school as yet unconverted to State Socialism, who looks for further improvement not to an increase of the authority of government, but to the same agencies, moral, intellectual, and economical, which have brought us thus far, and one of which, science, is now operating with immensely increased power. A writer of this school can have no panacea or nostrum to offer; and when a nostrum or panacea is offered, he will necessarily be found rather on the critical side. He will look for improvement, not for regeneration; expect improvement still to be, as it has been, gradual; and hope much from steady, calm, and harmonious effort, little from violence or revolution. In his estimation the clearest gain reaped by the world from all the struggles through which it has been going, amidst much that is equivocal or still on trial, will liberty of opinion.
