Book Working on Wicked Problems

Download or read book Working on Wicked Problems written by Komla Tsey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for researchers and students looking for ways to engage communities and industry in research. It is also written for community leaders, philanthropists and managers of organisations interested in building mutually beneficial partnerships with researchers, or training their own researchers. To this end, I hope that the readers of this book will appreciate that in their own way, whether big or small, they will be able to make research more meaningful by genuinely and honestly engaging with the communities of people with whom they work. I hope that an auto-ethnography or personal narrative approach will throw light on the factors that lead to positive research engagement and impact, thereby helping researchers avoid some of my pitfalls.

Book Architecture and the Housing Question

Download or read book Architecture and the Housing Question written by Can Bilsel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-06-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture and the Housing Question examines how the design and provision of housing around the world have become central both to competing political projects and to the architecture profession. How have architects acting as housing experts helped alleviate or enforce class, race, and gender inequality? What are the disciplinary implications of taking on shelter for the multitude as an architectural assignment and responsibility? The book features essays in the historiography of architecture and the housing question, and a collection of historical case studies from Belgium, China, France, Ghana, the Netherlands, Kenya, the Soviet Union, Turkey, and the United States. The thematic organization of the collection, interrogating housing expertise, the state apparatus, segregation and colonialism, highlights the methodological questions that underpin its international outlook. The book will appeal to students and scholars in architecture, architectural history, theory, and urban studies.

Book Critical Systemic Praxis for Social and Environmental Justice

Download or read book Critical Systemic Praxis for Social and Environmental Justice written by Janet McIntyre-Mills and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book develops a practical approach to public policy issues that have continued to be intractable because of a lack of emphasis on transcultural understanding. Sustained examples help to increase the readability and the accessibility of theory and methodology. The key themes address the issue that: -Management needs to be more systemic. Critical Systemic Praxis is the process whereby we find ways to work across discipline areas and sectoral areas, in order to address complex social, political, economic and environmental problems. -The way we define and address problems depends on an ability to work with, rather than within knowledge areas. -By introducing the notion of governance we can extend traditional management from an organisational context to an inter-organisational context and locate governance as the goal for sustainable social and environmental justice. The core aspects of praxis are: -Respectful listening and dialogue to set up appropriate contexts for participatory design. -Participatory designs based on participatory action research to map tacit and explicit knowledge of participants (professional and ordinary citizens). -Strategic decision making across discipline areas, cultural contexts and knowledge areas. -Action learning to transfer the policy and practice learnings. -Mainstreaming the approach to governance in the social, political, economic and environmental sectors. The book develops a systemic approach to public policy issues. Examples are used throughout to exemplify theory. The integrated approach to policy and practice is ideally suited to addressing the socio-economic and environmental issues.

Book Subversive Property

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sarah Keenan
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2014-08-13
  • ISBN : 1317745949
  • Pages : 202 pages

Download or read book Subversive Property written by Sarah Keenan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relationship between space, subjectivity and property in order to invert conventional socio-legal understandings of property. Sarah Keenan demonstrates that new political possibilities for property may be unveiled by thinking about property in terms of space and belonging, rather than exclusion. Drawing on feminist and critical race theory, this book shifts focus away from the propertied subject and on to the broader spaces in and through which the propertied subject is located. Using case studies, such as analyses of compulsory leases under Australia’s Northern Territory Intervention and lesbian asylum cases from a range of jurisdictions, Keenan argues that these spaces consist of networks of relations that revolve around belonging: not just belonging between subject and object, as property is traditionally understood, but also the less explored relation of belonging between the part and the whole. This book therefore offers a conceptually useful way of analysing a wide range of socio-legal issues. It will be of relevance to those working in the area of property and legal geography, but also to those with more general interests in socio-legal studies, social and political theory, postcolonial studies, critical race studies and gender and sexuality studies.

Download or read book The Hard Light of Day written by Rod Moss and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare glimpse into the Australian heartland and the interactions of black and white Australians through the eyes of an artist. Two years after artist Rod Moss arrived in Alice Springs in Australia’s outback to teach painting, he met an indigenous couple who had set up camp in the gully beside his home. Over the next twenty-five years, his friendship with Xavier and Petrina Neil and the friendships that grew from it with the families of Whitegate, an Arrernte aboriginal camp on the outskirts of town, would nourish and challenge Moss beyond his imagining. The Hard Light of Day offers a rare insight into the reality of life in the Outback, from the contours of the MacDonnell Ranges and the textures and sounds of Arrernte culture, to the endemic violence, alcoholism and ill-health that continue to devastate Aboriginal lives. In recalling the relationships and experiences that have shaped his life and work in Alice Springs, Moss reveals the human face behind the statistics and celebrates the enriching, transformative power of friendship. Illustrated with Moss's evocative paintings and photographs, The Hard Light of Day is an incredible journey into a world that is rarely glimpsed, and an artist's chronicle of the moments that have inspired him.
