Book excerpt: When originally published in 1945 this book was the first to give a detailed account, based largely upon original sources, of the ‘Scheldt Question’ from its medieval origins to the settlement of 1839 and to set it against an adequate background of political and economic history. The river Scheldt, the waterway giving access to the port of Antwerp which was so much in the news during the Allied liberation of Belgium and Holland was for centuries the subject of an international question in which all the leading states of Europe were at different times involved. The later part of the book is based on archival researches including the private papers of Lord Palmerston.

Download or read book Some Problems of the Peace Conference written by Charles Homer Haskins and published by . This book was released on 1920 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Problems of the Peace Conference The purpose of the lectures here published is to give a rapid survey of the principal elements in that territorial settlement of Europe which has been pronounced the most reasonable part of the work of the Conference1 of Paris. Each problem is placed in its historical setting, while at the same time the effort is made to view it as some thing demanding practical solution in the treaties of peace. The perspective of proceedings as seen at Paris has been kept in mind throughout, although the authors have not felt at liberty to enter into the details of negotiations which may have become known to them in their official capac ity. Limits of time and space restrict the treat ment to Europe, and to those parts of Europe which came before the Conference for settlement. Hence Russia is necessarily omitted. The lectures are printed substantially as dcliv ered at the Lowell Institute last January, with only incidental revision. In the spelling of place names the official local usage has been followed except where there is a well established English form. The first four chapters were prepared by Mr. Haskins, the last four by Mr. Lord. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Maritime Trade around Europe 1300 1600 written by Wim Blockmans and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Maritime Trade around Europe 1300-1600 explores the links between maritime trading networks around Europe, from the Mediterranean and the Atlantic to the North and Baltic Seas. Maritime trade routes connected diverse geographical and cultural spheres, contributing to a more integrated Europe in both cultural and material terms. This volume explores networks’ economic functions alongside their intercultural exchanges, contacts and practical arrangements in ports on the European coasts. The collection takes as its central question how shippers and merchants were able to connect regional and interregional trade circuits around and beyond Europe in the late medieval period. It is divided into four parts, with chapters in Part I looking across broad themes such as ships and sailing routes, maritime law, financial linkages and linguistic exchanges. In the following parts - divided into the Mediterranean, the Baltic Sea, and the Atlantic and North Seas - contributors present case studies addressing themes including conflict resolution, relations between different types of main ports and their hinterland, the local institutional arrangements supporting maritime trade, and the advantages and challenges of locations around the continent. The volume concludes with a summary that points to the extraterritorial character of trading systems during this fascinating period of expansion. Drawing together an international team of contributors, The Routledge Handbook of Maritime Trade around Europe is a vital contribution to the study of maritime history and the history of trade. It is essential reading for students and scholars in these fields.
