Book Jack the Ripper

Download or read book Jack the Ripper written by M. J. Trow and published by Grub Street Publishers. This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive investigation, “full of colorful details and sensational speculations—for those who enjoy whodunits with a bit of real history” (Book News). For more than a hundred and twenty years, the identity of the Whitechapel murderer known to us as Jack the Ripper has both eluded us and spawned a veritable industry of speculation. This book names him. Mad doctors, Russian lunatics, bungling midwives, railway policemen, failed barristers, weird artists, royal princes, and white-eyed men. All of these and more have been put in the frame for the Whitechapel murders. Where ingenious invention and conspiracy theories have failed, common sense has floated out of the window. M. J. Trow, in this gripping historical reinvestigation, cuts through the fog of speculation, fantasy, and obsession that has concealed the identity of the most famous serial murderer of all time.

Download or read book Quest for the Killers written by GOODFIELD and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The five stories in this book are tales about human beings and the human condition in which they find themselves. They are stories of scientists - but not of white-coated laboratory figures, happy to leave to others the practical application of their discoveries. In the circumstances I recount, the scientists were brought face to face, sometimes in dramatic confrontations, with the very people whose problems their work might help solve. As I came to realize, there now exists an international network of unusual scientists whose members are concerned individuals, deter mined that their scientific work should help alleviate the human condition. This book was conceived as an account of some exciting epi sodes in contemporary biomedicine. But during the four years it took to complete, several other themes emerged. First, each story illustrates aspects of the relation between Western science and technology and those major health problems which are often of dreadful significance for the Third World. In this relation the fruits of Western research are not simply applied to global health problems. Rather the relation is reciprocal, for scientific research, whether prompted by the medical problems of the Third World or actually conducted there, is yielding vital clues to many fundamental aspects of human biology, as well as pointing toward possible therapies for the serious diseases of Western society, such as cancer or the dementi as of old age. After I had written the first draft a second theme emerged.

Download or read book The Scientific Attitude written by Frederick Grinnell and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 1992-03-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE SCIENTIFIC ATTITUDE presents a systematic account of the cognitive and social features of science. Written by an experimental biologist actively engaged in research, the work is unique in its attempt to understand science in terms of day-to-day practice. The book goes beyond the traditional description of science that focuses on method and logic to characterize the scientific attitude as a way of looking at the world. Professor Grinnell uses examples from biomedical research to describe science at three interdependent levels. At the first level, the individual scientist makes observations, formulates hypotheses, and does experiments. The scientist's thought style determines what can be seen and what it will appear to mean. At the second level, scientists participate in social institutions such as graduate programs, research groups, journal editorial boards, and grant review panels. Each of these institutions tries to promote its own distinctive collective thought style. Finally, at the third level, scientists participate in the world of everyday life beyond science, a world that continuously influences and is influenced by the activities and discoveries of science.

She taught us how to harness the chaos of serial killers' minds and helped us decipher the undecipherable. The land is ruled by a council of quarreling nobles, the country is uncertain and the throne is shaky. A mysterious secret society called The Black Flame threatens the very foundations of the law, the Church, and the kingdom itself in a deep and terrible conspiracy of murder, treason, sorcery and devil worship. On the windswept northern coast of England stand Burnstow Abbey and the convent of St. Regula, headquarters for the Black Flame and the setting for deeds of debauchery and depravity of a kind to shock even the hardened fifteenth century. Royal agents sent to investigate vanish or wash up on the shore dead. Graves are opened and bodies taken for blasphemous and terrifying occult rites. Young women enter the convent of St. Regula and never come out. A young novice at the abbey, Arthur Fitzroy, the bastard son of the late King Henry, is found horribly murdered in an obscene parody of the crucifixion. The regents must take action, and so they send in the Middle Ages' most har-boiled detective: Sir Thomas Clave, the Black Knight. Murdering monks, poisoning prioresses, scheming royal uncles, back street assassins, a mad alchemist, a beautiful and dangerous Queen of the Witches, the Black Knight cuts his way through them all to discover the truth and prevent the final horror set for All Hallows' Eve.

Book excerpt: After the death of Marion Morrison, known as John Wayne, in 1979, President Jimmy Carter said that Wayne "was bigger than life. In an age of few heroes, he was the genuine article. But he was more than a hero; he was a symbol of many of the qualities that made America great." The first section of this study concentrates on Wayne's style of work and sphere of action as an actor: The man who works for a living and is concerned with his audience and the constraints of his immediate environment. The second section examines the artist: the man who lives in his art, who disappears into his character as an archetype of human fears and desires. Analyses of films that have made Wayne a hero are presented in the third section. A comprehensive filmography and numerous photographs are included.

Download or read book Violence and Psychopathy written by Adrian Raine and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adrian Raine Department of Psychology. University of Southern California. USA Jose Sanmartin Queen Sojia Center for the Study of Violence. Valencia. Spain The problems that psychopathic and violent offenders create for society are not restricted to North America. Instead, these offenders create havoc throughout the world, including Europe. In recognition of this fact, Queen Sophia of Spain has promoted a Center for the Study of Violence which recognizes both biological and social contributions to the cause of violence. In November 1999, the Queen Sofia Center for the Study of Violence held its IV International Meeting on the Biology and Sociology of Violence. This fourth Meeting, which was under the Honorary Presidency of H. M. The Queen of Spain, examined the biological, psychological and social aspects of the psychopath, the violent offender, and the serial killer. This book presents some of the key contributions made at that conference and which were first published in Spanish in 2000 by Ariel Press. A key thrust of this book, and a stance shared by all of its contributors, is the notion that violence and psychopathy simply cannot be understood solely, or even fundamentally, in terms of social and environmental forces and influences. Nor do biological factors offer an exclusive explanation.
