Book excerpt: "The Adventures of Nique, Nick, and Nelle" invites you into the lives of three young children who have the unique ability to turn everyday events into fun filled adventures. The first book of this series, "Quest for a Family Pet", is derived from a true story of how three young children try to "butter up" mom to purchase a puppy for their family. This adventure is told through the eyes of Nique (pronounced NEEK), the 10 year old big brother who is very funny and too smart for his own good. In this book Nique, Nick, and Nelle are very creative as they try to convince mom that they are ready to care for a pet. Mom loves her children very much, and would love for them to have a pet. But are they really ready for a puppy? Sonya Correll Cook is the oldest of four children and was born and raised in North Carolina. Over the years she has written numerous poems, songs, short stories, dedications, and newsletters. She has now focused her talents on writing picture books that appeal to children of diverse backgrounds. Sonya is a mother of three and strongly believes the family unit remains to be the strongest entity in society and the most impressionable in a child's life. She strives to instill strong morals and spiritual values in her children through everyday activities and experiences. "Through the eyes of a child", "A picture is worth a thousand words", and "Train up a child in the way he should go..." Proverbs 22:6 (KJV) These quotes inspired Sonya to create a series of fiction picture books. These books were created through the eyes of her children and to be enjoyed by young readers of diverse backgrounds. The product of this family collaboration is a series of books entitled "The Adventures of Nique, Nick, and Nelle". Everyone has a family, be it a one or two parent family, grandparent(s) raising grandchildren, or close nit friends. Members of all families are exposed to the same subtle lessons, they're just dressed differently. After all, Life Love, and Lessons are what families are about and lessons learned through laughter are not easily forgotten. Look for the second and third books of this series, "...And That's How the Cookie Crumbled", and "Nick's Big Game" to be released in 2008. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book helps pet owners fully understand what it means to care for a companion animal, from choosing a pet to veterinary visits and beyond. Pets are extremely popular in the United States. According to a recent survey, one third of American homes contain one or more cats; almost 40 percent of U.S. households include at least one dog. Pets serve as cherished companions for everyone from young children to senior citizens. However, there are responsibilities and risks involved with pet ownership, and the proper care of these animals that many consider "family" involves much more than keeping a water dish and food bowl full. This book is written by top animal health experts to explain our roles, rights, and health care challenges when bringing animals into our homes. Topics such as health, first aid, companion animal diseases, common surgeries, and alternative care for pets are all addressed. Information is also provided about pet birds, large pets such as horses, exotics such as snakes and reptiles, and "pocket pets" such as hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, and rats.

Book Mercy For Animals

  • Author : Nathan Runkle
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2017-09-12
  • ISBN : 0399574077
  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book Mercy For Animals written by Nathan Runkle and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling look at animal welfare and factory farming in the United States from Mercy For Animals, the leading international force in preventing cruelty to farmed animals and promoting compassionate food choices and policies. Nathan Runkle would have been a fifth-generation farmer in his small midwestern town. Instead, he founded our nation’s leading nonprofit organization for protecting factory farmed animals. In Mercy For Animals, Nathan brings us into the trenches of his organization’s work; from MFA’s early days in grassroots activism, to dangerous and dramatic experiences doing undercover investigations, to the organization’s current large-scale efforts at making sweeping legislative change to protect factory farmed animals and encourage compassionate food choices. But this isn’t just Nathan’s story. Mercy For Animals examines how our country moved from a network of small, local farms with more than 50 percent of Americans involved in agriculture to a massive coast-to-coast industrial complex controlled by a mere 1 percent of our population—and the consequences of this drastic change on animals as well as our global and local environments. We also learn how MFA strives to protect farmed animals in behind-the-scenes negotiations with companies like Nestlé and other brand names—conglomerates whose policy changes can save countless lives and strengthen our planet. Alongside this unflinching snapshot of our current food system, readers are also offered hope and solutions—big and small—for ending mistreatment of factory farmed animals. From simple diet modifications to a clear explanation of how to contact corporations and legislators efficiently, Mercy For Animals proves that you don’t have to be a hardcore vegan or an animal-rights activist to make a powerful difference in the lives of animals.

Download or read book Quest for Harmony written by Chuan-kang Shih and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-07 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this long-awaited ethnography, Chuan-kang Shih details the traditional social and cultural conditions of the Moso, a matrilineal group living on the border of Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces in southwest China. Among the Moso, a majority of the adult population practice a visiting system called tisese instead of marriage as the normal sexual and reproductive institution. Until recently, tisese was noncontractual, nonobligatory, and nonexclusive. Partners lived and worked in separate households. The only prerequisite for a tisese relationship was a mutual agreement between the man and the woman to allow sexual access to each other. In a comprehensive account, Quest for Harmony explores this unique practice specifically, and offers thorough documentation, fine-grained analysis, and an engaging discussion of the people, history, and structure of Moso society. Drawing on the author's extensive fieldwork, conducted from 1987 to 2006, this is the first ethnography of the Moso written in English.
