Cette étude s'organise autour de deux idées essentielles : les causes des conflits de frontières au Moyen-Orient et leurs modes de solution en droit international. Deux facteurs sont considérés comme à l'origine de ces conflits, le rôle des Grandes puissances européennes (la Grande-Bretagne et la France) et le rôle des minorités du Moyen-Orient dans le processus de démarcation des frontières et la formation des États du Moyen-Orient. D'autres enjeux sont survenus une fois que les pays du Moyen-Orient ont accédé à l'indépendance à partir de 1945, il s'agit de l'accès aux ressources pétrolières et le contrôle des ressources de l'eau. Bien que la prééminence de la gestion politique des conflits de frontières montre clairement l'attachement des États du Moyen-Orient au règlement politique (les négociations et le recours aux organisations régionales et internationales), il n'en demeure pas moins que "la juridictionnalisation" de ces conflits (le recours aux tribunaux arbitraux et à la justice internationale) constitue la meilleure solution pour en trouver un règlement pacifique définitif, et par conséquent, pour contribuer à réaliser la paix dans cette région

The volume’s main objective is to reconsider the “artificial” character of the Syrian territory and to reveal the processes by which its borders were shaped and eventually internalized by the country’s main actors. Based on extensive archival research, the book first documents the creation and stabilization of Syrian borders before and during the mandates period (nineteenth century to 1946), studying Ottoman and French territorialization strategies but also emphasizing the key role of the borderlands in this process. In turn, it investigates the perceptual boundaries resulting from the conflict, and how they materialized in space. Lastly, it explores the geographical and political imaginaries of non-state actors (PYD, ISIS) that emerged from the war.
