Book excerpt: Cette étude a été réalisée afin d'évaluer les relations entre les conditions environnementales, la structure spatiale multi-échelles et les traits fonctionnels pouvant influencer la structure des communautés. Dans le premier chapitre, l'influence à différentes échelles de l'environnement et de la structure spatiale sur divers descripteurs biologiques décrivant la distribution de 17 espèces de poissons des rivières a été déterminée. Dans le second chapitre, la relation entre l'environnement et la variabilité phénotypique de la morphologie et de la capacité de nage de 10 espèces de poissons des rivières a été évaluée. Pour ce faire, nous avons étudié les communautés de poissons des rivières dans la région des Laurentides au Québec, Canada. Le plan d'échantillonnage représentait le réseau hydrographique de la région et était de nature hiérarchique. Il comprenait trois bassins versants (e.g., rivière Rouge, du Nord et Ouareau), à l'intérieur desquels 39 sites ont été répartis et divisés en 143 sections au total, chacune associée à un type de mésohabitat (e.g., rapide, droit et fosse). Pour chaque section, les poissons ont été capturés à la pêcheuse électrique, anesthésiés et photographiés afin de déterminer leur présence-absence et évaluer leurs caractéristiques morphologiques en utilisant la géomorphométrie. Également pour chaque section, des conditions environnementales ont été évaluées afin de caractériser le milieu. De plus, certains poissons ont été soumis à un protocole de nage standard au laboratoire pour déterminer leur capacité de nage soutenue. Les résultats du premier chapitre ont souligné l'importance de l'échelle choisie en ce qui concerne la variabilité des conditions environnementales et de la distribution des poissons, en plus des patrons de cooccurrence et de diversité. Sur les 17 espèces retenues pour cette partie, 60% a sélectionné un type d'habitat particulier. La distance par voie d'eau totale entre les sites est celle qui a modélisé le plus fidèlem.

Ils constituent une ressource importante pour l'homme en fournissant eau potable, nourriture et énergie. Les conditions environnementales des lacs structurent leur communauté mais les activités anthropiques telles que l'agriculture les perturbent et les structurent. Les situations où plusieurs pressions - notamment l'eutrophisation et les espèces non-natives - agissent conjointement sont particulièrement étudiées car elles peuvent avoir des conséquences complexes et inattendues. De nombreuses méthodes existent pour comprendre les effets de ces différents facteurs de structuration sur les écosystèmes. Dans cette thèse, des indices taxonomiques et des indices basés sur des traits fonctionnels catégoriels et morphologiques sont utilisés. Une sensibilité supérieure des indices fonctionnels a été montrée, notamment pour détecter les effets de l'interaction de l'eutrophisation et des espèces non-natives. Des effets de l'eutrophisation sur les réseaux trophiques ont également été mis en avant. Pour une compréhension plus fine de la structuration des communautés de poissons lacustres, les processus d'assemblage et les effets de l'environnement et de l'échelle sur ces processus d'assemblage ont été analysés. Indépendamment de l'échelle, le filtrage environnemental a un rôle plus fort que l'exclusion compétitive sur différents traits morphologiques liés au déplacement ou à la prise alimentaire. Enfin, un indice de vulnérabilité des communautés a été développé basé sur la redondance fonctionnelle des communautés.

Il est actuellement reconnu que la structuration de communautés résulte de processus qui agissent à plusieurs échelles spatiales et temporelles. Dans ce cadre, l'objectif principal de cette thèse est l'identification des facteurs responsables de la distribution et de l'abondance des espèces de poissons d'eau douce tropicaux en privilégiant une approche à plusieurs échelles spatiales (intra-bassin, inter-bassins, inter-continentale) et temporelles (historique, inter-annuelle, saisonnière). Grâce à une importante somme de données acquises par recherche bibliographique sur les communautés de poissons tropicaux d'Afrique et d'Amérique du Sud ainsi que par des travaux de terrain menés en Amazonie bolivienne, des approches comparatives ont été effectuées afin de tester un certain nombre d'hypothèses relatives à la structure et la dynamique des communautés. Abordé d'abord par la diversité taxonomique (richesse spécifique) puis par la diversité des stratégies biologiques (traits d'histoire de vie), ce travail illustre les liens entre la variabilité environnementale des milieux aquatiques des régions tropicales et la diversité, la structure et la dynamique des peuplements de poissons. Les hypothèses qui y sont testées montrent l'existence de plusieurs filtres écologiques responsables des patterns observés : (1) influence des dernières glaciations sur la richesse régionale et continentale ; (2) relation fonctionnelle entre la disponibilité en ressources et le régime trophique des espèces affectant la richesse spécifique locale ; (3) influence de la surface des bassins sur la richesse et la composition en taille corporelle des espèces ; (4) influence de la saisonnalité hydrologique sur la distribution régionale des espèces en termes de stratégies démographiques; (5) influence différentielle des variations hydro-climatiques régionales sur les patterns de synchronisme des dynamiques des populations en fonction des stratégies démographiques des espèces. Intégrer ces diverses échelles d'espace et de temps est essentiel pour comprendre les mécanismes responsables des patterns observés actuellement ainsi que pour le développement de modèles prédictifs.

We chose as a model, fishes of the temperate and tropical streams of four zoogeographical areas: Europe (France), North America (USA), South America (Bolivia) and Africa (Gabon). Hence, ecomorphologic characteristics and trophic structure of fish communities were compared at local, regional and intercontinental scales between various sites and various streams. The results show that local communities’ organization depends on the combination of both local and regional and abiotic and biotic processes, relying on a historical and biogeographical context. These results could be useful for the decision makers to implement efficient conservation and management plans of the lotic systems

Les deux systèmes sont fortement liés et caractérisés par les systèmes d'inondation pulsés. À l'aide d'approches multivariées sur des bases de données piscicoles, environnementales et des traits fonctionnels des taxons étudiés, j'ai pu mettre en évidence : * les gradients longitudinaux des caractéristiques physicochimiques des eaux et l'importance relative des facteurs environnementaux dans la structuration des communautés de poissons à large échelle ; * la structure temporelle des communautés de poissons qui est fortement liée aux traits fonctionnels des taxons et déclenchée par les crues occasionnées du système * la structure de base du réseau trophique et l'état écologique du système d'inondation pulsé qui est perturbé par la pression anthropique. Ces résultats ont démontré leurs valeurs quant à leurs potentiels de transferts vers la compréhension écologique et la gestion durable des ressources de pêches dans le système d'inondation pulsé en Asie tropicale en relevant que : * la connectivité entre le fleuve Mékong et le lac Tonlé Sap est indispensable pour les poissons pour compléter leurs cycles de vie, et la conservation devrait prioritairement s'effectuer au milieu du Mékong où se trouve la plus forte diversité. * dans le système d'inondation pulsé, la structure temporelle des communautés dépend des dynamiques des crues, donc l'aménagement des cours d'eau est à éviter au maximum. * la compréhension bioécologique complète des communautés et leurs relations trophiques sont primordiales pour la mise en place des plans de gestion et de conservation à long terme.

Book excerpt: Concerns over the potential ecological effects of fishing have increased with the expansion of fisheries throughout the marine waters of the United States. Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat describes how assessment of fishing impacts depends on gear type, number and location of bottom tows, and the physical and biological characteristics of seafloor habitats. Many experimental studies have documented acute, gear-specific effects of trawling and dredging on various types of habitat. These studies indicate that low mobility, long-lived species are more vulnerable to towed fishing gear than short-lived species in areas where the seabed is often disturbed by natural phenomena. Trawling and dredging may also change the composition and productivity of fish communities dependent on seafloor habitats for food and refuge. The scale of these impacts depends on the level of fishing effort. This volume presents color maps of fishing effort for all regions with significant bottom trawl or dredge fisheries-the first time that such data has been assembled and analyzed for the entire nation.
