Book Mysticism and the Early South German Austrian Anabaptist Movement 1525 1531

Download or read book Mysticism and the Early South German Austrian Anabaptist Movement 1525 1531 written by Werner O. Packull and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Werner Packull delineates more clearly than any previous scholar the theological and spiritual differences between South German and Swiss Anabaptists. He examines thoroughly the dominant medieval mystical influence in the thought of Denck and Hut and the latter's immediate South German Anabaptist followers. Indeed, Packull decides that South German Anabaptism derives more from medieval mysticism than from the Reformation. Packull is convincing in his demonstration of this thesis because of his meticulous care in reading the primary sources and because he examines and refutes the arguments of those who would place the Protestant influence as the primary one. He carefully isolates and explains particular ideas of the medieval mystics and demonstrates their influence on Denck and Hut. Packull expands and elaborates the earlier suggestions of Kiwiet and Williams, both of whom postulated a discrete Anabaptism in South Germany as against that of Switzerland. He draws on the more recent and still unpublished work of Gottfried Seebass, especially on Seebass' selection of writings which he ascribes to Hut. Packull's second major thesis is that the earliest form of South German Anabaptism was transitional both sociologically and theologically. He demonstrates that there were indeed strains of Anabaptism which were not as clearly biblicist in emphasis as the one in Zurich. Packull's work makes the phenomenon of early Anabaptism more complex, less uniform, but hi252*.00storically more accurate, more in line with the realities of the religious ferment of the 1520s among German-speaking people.

Book From Radicals to Survivors

Download or read book From Radicals to Survivors written by John D. Derksen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first extensive study of Strasbourg's diverse religious nonconformists beyond 1543, and the first to explore their continuities and discontinuities over two generations. Based on vast archival records in Strasbourg and secondary sources, it moves beyond the political and theological emphases of earlier works to include social history, portraits of village life, and the second generation to 1570. Derksen finds that second generation nonconformists were substantially different from the first. Their social profile changed; from an urban mix of leaders, intellectuals and artisans, they became largely rural folk composed of lower class artisans. Further, in outlook their view narrowed from "radicals" who sought to change church and society at its root to dissenters concerned mainly to survive. At the same time there were continuities. When the revolts of the 1525 Peasants' War were crushed, dissident ideals found new expression in spiritualist, sectarian and apocalyptic streams. In these streams, into the 1560s and beyond, nonconformists continued their call for social and economic justice and meaningful participation in religion. The book will be of interest to historians of the Early Modern period, the Reformation's radicals, popular religion, sixteenth-century society and Strasbourg, and to those interested in the free church tradition.

Book Martin Bucer Briefwechsel Correspondance Band VII Oktober 1531 M rz 1532

Download or read book Martin Bucer Briefwechsel Correspondance Band VII Oktober 1531 M rz 1532 written by Berndt Hamm and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-10-31 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike most theologians of his age, Martin Bucer proved to be farsighted with respect to European affairs: In addition to his contacts within Alsace and Germany he established relations with almost every European country. It was his ecumenical attitude that always led him to mediate between the parties in the religious battles of his time. His deep commitment to the goal of reaching agreement can be traced in all his activities, works and letters. Since the first editor, Jean Rott (Strasbourg), died in 1998, Bucer's correspondence has been edited in Erlangen. This academic edition of source material provides future research with a broad basis for significant aspects of Reformation history about which very little is known. Volume VII covers the period from October 1531 to March 1532.

Book Andreas Bodenstein Von Karlstadt

Book excerpt: One of the important trends in more recent Reformation scholarship has been the extensive attention given the major "secondary" Reformers who aided and abetted, and sometimes challenged and infuriated, Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin. This book, which began as a doctoral dissertation at Yale University, is an attempt to elucidate the thought of one of the most important of these "Reformers in the wings." - Preface.

Book Communal Reformation

  • Author : Peter Blickle
  • Publisher : BRILL

  • Pages : 244 pages

Download or read book Communal Reformation written by Peter Blickle and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1992 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communal Reformation is the most original and provocative book to appear in its field in the past quarter-century. It met with an enthusiastic response, particularly in England and the United States, when first published in Germany in 1985 and is now available in translation. Peter Blickle's groundbreaking study, which is intended for scholars and students interested in the history of pre-modern Europe, the development of Germany, the history of Christianity, and historical sociology, reconstructs the connection between the crisis of rural society at the end of the Middle Ages, the great Peasants' War of 1525, and the reformation as a social movement. Blickle focuses on southern Germany, Switzerland, and Austria in the later Middle Ages and Early Modern eras (roughly 1400 to 1600), though his work has important implications for the social and religious history of Europe as a whole.
