It comprises the majority of papers presented at the seminar, ‘Brisbane’s Second World War’ held on 27 August 2011. For continuity and thematic reasons, the volume is divided into three sections. The first focuses predominantly on the home front, the second on front line activity and the third on various ways in which the war is recorded and remembered. The first section considers: • the heightened activities on the Brisbane River during World War II • the operations of the Advanced Land Headquarters in and around the University of Queensland • the significance of indicator loop technology as a defensive strategy against submarines • the US construction of an ordnance storage facility on Mount Coot-tha • the upgrading and strategic importance of Fort Lytton • the military and civilian roles undertaken by women Section two examines: • the exploits of the US submarines based in Brisbane • the valiant and dogged defence of Tobruk by the 2/15th Battalion during the Easter Battle in 1941 • the trials, torments and triumphs of the men of the 61st Battalion who finally halted the advance of the Japanese army at the Battle of Milne Bay • the achievements of Kenneth Fraser, who was responsible for effectively organising the treatment of casualties from the Middle East campaigns Finally, the third section relates: • the story of the creation of a war memorial for the 2/9th Battalion and its two dramatis personae, a Czech sculptor and his subject, an Aussie digger • the struggle to obtain heritage listing for Eagle Farm’s Hangar 7, a significant World War II facility • the importance of researching the military archives of the US in order to gain a better understanding of Brisbane during World War II. Book excerpt: The author of the bestselling Darwin Spitfires casts a forensic eye over the role that Allied air forces played – or failed to play – in crucial World War II campaigns in New Guinea. This is the story of the early battles of the South West Pacific theatre – the Coral Sea, Kokoda, Milne Bay, Guadalcanal – presented as a single air campaign that began with the Japanese conquest of Rabaul in January 1942. It is a story of both Australian and American airmen who flew and fought in the face of adversity – with incomplete training, inadequate aircraft, and from poorly set up and exposed airfields. And they persisted despite extreme exhaustion, sickness, poor morale and the near certainty of being murdered by their Japanese captors if they went down in enemy territory.

Download or read book Spearhead of Logistics written by Benjamin King and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spearhead of Logistics is a narrative branch history of the U.S. Army's Transportation Corps, first published in 1994 for transportation personnel and reprinted in 2001 for the larger Army community. The Quartermaster Department coordinated transportation support for the Army until World War I revealed the need for a dedicated corps of specialists. The newly established Transportation Corps, however, lasted for only a few years. Its significant utility for coordinating military transportation became again transparent during World War II, and it was resurrected in mid-1942 to meet the unparalleled logistical demands of fighting in distant theaters. Finally becoming a permanent branch in 1950, the Transportation Corps continued to demonstrate its capability of rapidly supporting U.S. Army operations in global theaters over the next fifty years. With useful lessons of high-quality support that validate the necessity of adequate transportation in a viable national defense posture, it is an important resource for those now involved in military transportation and movement for ongoing expeditionary operations. This text should be useful to both officers and noncommissioned officers who can take examples from the past and apply the successful principles to future operations, thus ensuring a continuing legacy of Transportation excellence within Army operations. Additionally, military science students and military historians may be interested in this volume.

Download or read book Victory in Papua written by Samuel Milner and published by . This book was released on 2002-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strategic significance of the Papuan Campaign can be briefly stated. In addition to blunting the Japanese thrust toward Australia and the transpacific line of communications, it put General MacArthur's forces in a favorable position to take the offensive. But this little known campaign is significant for still another reason. It was the battle test of a large hitherto-inexperienced U.S. Army force and its commanders under the conditions which were to attend much of the ground fighting in the Pacific. Costly in casualties and suffering, it taught lessons that the Army had to learn if it was to cope with the Japanese under conditions of tropical warfare. Samuel Milner holds a graduate degree in history from the University of Alberta and has done further graduate work in political science at the University of Minnesota. During World War II, he served in Australia and New Guinea as a historian with the Air Transport Command, Army Air Forces. Upon completing Victory in Papua he left the Office of the Chief of Military History to become historian of the Air Weather Service, U.S. Air Force.
