Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researching Barak Bassman’s maternal and paternal ancestors takes us back nearly 300 years to small villages in Poland and in the Russian Empire, where these men and women struggled to eke out a living, to live a Jewish life, and to endure the perils of anti-Semitism. Later we track the family’s emigration to the “Golden Land” of America, as well as the horrible deaths of those who remained in Europe and perished in the Holocaust. A close look into some family members’ archival documents from America reveals the tragic consequences of the abject poverty in which they lived. Yet throughout, our research of Barak Bassman’s ancestors has documented their tenacity to survive and make a better life for their children and future generations.

Download or read book Sayre Family written by Ralph Hall Sayre and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-07-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Sayre came with his family from England to Lynn, Massachusetts in the early 1630's. Among descendants of Thomas were clergymen, surgeons, attorneys, ambassadors, and representatives of almost every profession. Francis B., cowboy, professor of law, and ambassador, was son-in-law of former President Woodrow Wilson, Zelda was the wife of American novelist, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and subject of one of his books. David A. was a silversmith, banker, and founder of Lexington's Sayre School. Many Sayre descendants were taken by wars in service to America and never had the chance to win recognition for their inherent abilities. SAYRE FAMILY...another 100-years, in a large part, focuses on the early pioneers who came to or passed through the Ohio Valley of West Virginia and Ohio. At least three direct descendants of Thomas had made settlements in that area by the Nineteenth Century. One, David Sayre, came from New Jersey about 1778, and left many descendants who still lived in that area at the beginning of the Twenty-first Century. The bulk of this genealogy covers those, while other Sayre families whose ancestral links were not discovered are also included. The three generations of ancestors above each family block makes tracing easier.

Download or read book Blood and Village written by William Palmer and published by William Palmer. This book was released on 2004 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At once a mystery of detection, a family history, and a rite of passage, Blood and Village traces the lives of the author's parents from the closing years of the 19th century in a small South German town to the New York neighborhoods where they raised their family. Why did they leave their bucolic village, the author asks, why them and so few others? In what sense did the village die after they left? And in having left, why did the village still have such a hold over them all their lives? In his search for some answers, the author delves into the social history of this Swabian village and describes his own return to its people, vineyards, pastures, and orchards. Along the way he ruminates on his father's World War I service and on his mother's trip back to the village in the turbulent summer of 1934, on his life in the 1940s and 1950s as a first-generation American, and on how the U.S. Navy and his research interests in physics brought him back to the village of his parents.

Download or read book Queen of Spies written by Paddy Hayes and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2016-01-19 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “fascinating and long overdue” biography reveals the remarkable life of a Baroness who was one of Britain’s most celebrated spies (Washington Post). From living in a shack in Tanzania to becoming Baroness Park of Monmouth, Daphne Park led a most unusual life—one that consisted of a lifelong love affair with the world of Britain’s secret services. In the 1970s, she was appointed to Secret Intelligence Service’s most senior operational rank as one of its seven Area Controllers. In Queen of Spies, Paddy Hayes recounts the evolution of the British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) from World War II to the Cold War through the eyes of Daphne Park, one of its outstanding and most unusual operatives. It is a fascinating and intimate narrative of how the modern SIS went about its business whether in Moscow, Hanoi, or the Congo, and shows how Park was able to rise through the ranks of a field that had been comprised almost entirely of men. Queen of Spies captures all the paranoia, isolation, and deception of Cold War intelligence work, and combines it with the personal story of one extraordinary woman trying to navigate this secretive world. It is “as exciting as any good spy thriller—but it’s all true” (Kirkus, starred review).

Download or read book The Royal Prerogative and Constitutional Law written by Noel Cox and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the royal prerogative in terms of its theory, history and application today. The work explores the development of the royal prerogative through the evolution of imperial government, and more recent structural changes in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in the Commonwealth. While examining specific prerogative powers, the development of justiciability of the prerogative, and the exercise of the prerogative, it lays bare the heart of constitutionality in the Westminster system of government. There is said to be a black hole of unaccountable authority at the heart of the constitution and it is this which this book examines. The focus is upon the constitutional development of the United Kingdom and the old dominions of Canada, Australia and New Zealand. This approach is comparative and historical, using specific case studies of such events as the dissolution of Parliament and the appointment and dismissal of Prime Ministers. The book will be of interest to academics and researchers working in the areas of Constitutional Law and Politics.
