On one of the early days in April, 1784, at about quarter past three in the afternoon, our old acquaintance Marechal de Richelieu, having with his own hands colored his eyebrows with a perfumed dye, pushed away the mirror held before him by his valet, -- the successor, but not the equal, of his faithful Rafte, -- and shaking his head in the manner peculiar to himself, said: "Ah, that will do very well!" He arose from his armchair, brushing from his bluevelvet small-clothes, with a movement of the finger almost juvenile, the atoms of white powder which had floated down from his wig.
