Book Genealogies of Long Island Families

Download or read book Genealogies of Long Island Families written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception in 1870, "The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record" has been at the forefront in publishing articles on Long Island families, many of them lengthy, definitive studies spread out over several issues. In a number of these articles the English or Dutch origin of families is established. No better purpose could be served than to gather these articles together and reprint them in their entirety, thus making available a mass of information on Long Island families that has previously been difficult to locate. With the articles appropriately consolidated and arranged, and additions and corrections from "The Record" properly appended, this two-volume compilation becomes the single greatest repository of Long Island genealogies in existence. In addition, it is fully indexed and is published with an introduction by Henry B. Hoff, former editor of "The Record."

Book The Records of the Court of Sessions of Suffolk County in the Province of New York 1670 1688

Download or read book The Records of the Court of Sessions of Suffolk County in the Province of New York 1670 1688 written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the English seized New Netherland in 1664, they organized a large portion of their new colony into a jurisdiction they called Yorkshire. This new Yorkshire, like its English namesake, was divided into administrative units called ridings. All of Long Island east of Oyster Bay fell in the East Riding. This volume contains the records of the Court of Sessions of the East Riding from 1670 to 1688. After 1683, New York was reorganized into counties, and the East Riding was renamed Suffolk County. For the most part, this volume consists of probate records. It also contains records of court cases and copies of deeds. But its chief value is as a collection of wills and estate inventories of an entire generation. Enmeshed in the stylized formulas used when drafting wills can be discerned the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs of the ordinary men who lived on Long Island in the latter half of the seventeenth century. For many of them, these wills and inventories constitute the principal enduring expression of their lives. The book contains a full-name index; six stylized maps showing home lot locations for Southampton, Southold, East Hampton, and Smithtown; and a beautiful reproduction of Robert Ryder’s antique map of Long Island, courtesy of Brown University.
