Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queens and Princesses of France As the following pages are chiefly designed for the perusal of youth, (to whom biography is always the most attractive form of instruction and amusement,) such lives only have been selected from the long array of Queens and Princesses who have adorned the throne of France as have been deemed to afford examples of the greatest virtues, exhibited under circumstances of the most trying nature. And lest the description of the beauty, talents, wealth, and other worldly possessions of the royal ladies herein commemorated should excite the youthful reader to envy, I would call her attention to the fact of its not being these qualities alone, but the virtues which distinguished them from their contemporaries, that have earned for them the admiration of posterity. This book was released on 2017-05-26 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Queens of France, Vol. 1 of 2 Clovis was the first chief who bore the title of King of France; for although several of his pre decessors had acquired great advantage in their attacks upon the Romans, hitherto they had ulti mately been repulsed with such vigour that they were frequently obliged to re-cross the Rhine; and Clovis was the first who resided as sole conqueror in France. The trifling importance attached to the greater number of the first race of kings, the similarity of their names, and, above all, the continual division of their states, inevitably introduced a degree of confusion into their history. Prior to the entire subjugation of Gaul by the Franks under Clovis, four French chiefs had succes sively reigned over a part of the country as kings; but very little is known of them, France having been at that time shrouded in the mist of barbarism.
