Download or read book Bringing Back Yvette written by John Gurley and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-02-06 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authorhouse, in the past year, published three of my books about my wife, Yvette, who was in a memory support unit at a care center that is affiliated with a large, luxury retirement home named Vi at Palo Alto. Yvette was there, with dementia, for almost three years, until her death in December 2014. My previous three books about Yvette recorded how Carmen (her superb caregiver), I, and others gave her a new life that was interesting, challenging, full of beauty, and fashioned to keep her as healthy (mentally and physically) as our abilities and efforts allowed. This book continues our story by looking at the final six months of Yvette's life. It was during this period of terrible stress and duress that my wife displayed more courage, cheerfulness, and beauty than any of us believed possible. She even died in serenity and with beauty.

Download or read book Queens of Jerusalem written by Katherine Pangonis and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of a trailblazing dynasty of royal women who ruled the Middle East and how they persevered through instability and seize greater power. In 1187 Saladin's armies besieged the holy city of Jerusalem. He had previously annihilated Jerusalem's army at the battle of Hattin, and behind the city's high walls a last-ditch defence was being led by an unlikely trio - including Sibylla, Queen of Jerusalem. They could not resist Saladin, but, if they were lucky, they could negotiate terms that would save the lives of the city's inhabitants. Queen Sibylla was the last of a line of formidable female rulers in the Crusader States of Outremer. Yet for all the many books written about the Crusades, one aspect is conspicuously absent: the stories of women. Queens and princesses tend to be presented as passive transmitters of land and royal blood. In reality, women ruled, conducted diplomatic negotiations, made military decisions, forged alliances, rebelled, and undertook architectural projects. Sibylla's grandmother Queen Melisende was the first queen to seize real political agency in Jerusalem and rule in her own right. She outmanoeuvred both her husband and son to seize real power in her kingdom, and was a force to be reckoned with in the politics of the medieval Middle East. The lives of her Armenian mother, her three sisters, and their daughters and granddaughters were no less intriguing. Queens of Jerusalem is a stunning debut by a rising historian and a rich revisionist history of Medieval Palestine.

Download or read book I Died a Million Times written by Robert Miklitsch and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2021-01-11 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s, the gangster movie and film noir crisscrossed to create gangster noir. Robert Miklitsch takes readers into this fascinating subgenre of films focused on crime syndicates, crooked cops, and capers. With the Senate's organized crime hearings and the brighter-than-bright myth of the American Dream as a backdrop, Miklitsch examines the style and history, and the production and cultural politics, of classic pictures from The Big Heat and The Asphalt Jungle to lesser-known gems like 711 Ocean Drive and post-Fifties movies like Ocean’s Eleven. Miklitsch pays particular attention to trademark leitmotifs including the individual versus the collective, the family as a locus of dissension and rapport, the real-world roots of the heist picture, and the syndicate as an octopus with its tentacles deep into law enforcement, corporate America, and government. If the memes of gangster noir remain prototypically dark, the look of the films becomes lighter and flatter, reflecting the influence of television and the realization that, under the cover of respectability, crime had moved from the underworld into the mainstream of contemporary everyday life.

Download or read book Popcorn written by Garry Mulholland and published by Orion. This book was released on 2010-04-29 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugely acclaimed author of THIS IS UNCOOL and FEAR OF MUSIC turns his attention to rock 'n' roll movies. From BLACKBOARD JUNGLE to QUADROPHENIA, from 8 MILE to ABBA: THE MOVIE, no one has seriously looked at the strange phenomenon that is the rock 'n' roll movie. Garry Mulholland turns his focus away from classic records to the best, the worst, the weird and the completely deranged from the world of the rock movie. Part serious critical appreciation, part celebration of B-movie trash, Garry Mulholland's inclusive approach is the key to his success. He is as comfortable deconstructing the likes of PERFORMANCE, GIMME SHELTER or JUBILEE as he is celebrating FOOTLOOSE or JAILHOUSE ROCK. As he writes: '... Anyone who rejects the joy that the likes of GREASE or DIRTY DANCING or FAME have brought millions of people without even attempting to engage with why such unapologetic trash works can't really be that interested in filmgoers at all.'
